I think the virtuous concept of treating everybody as equal has been gravely misunderstood here.

And that would actually be a kind of clear TOS violation that would go unpunished. Because EVE is so close to the real world where apparently only fools stick to the rules.

Wow, so many angry little people in here. Eulysees you really need to take a long hard look at your attitude my friend because it stinks and all its doing is making people think you are an idiot. I want to start with a quote
Originally by: Eulysees Chelt exclude a large proportion of your devoted PAYING clients by making the update useless to us
Where did you pull this number from and did you get assistance from David Blaine in producing it? I don't know anyone who still uses hardware as old as this for anything other than the most simple of tasks. I mean come on, SSE2 chips were released what? 7 years ago? maybe even 8. That is one hell of a long time in the PC hardware market, when updates and upgrades are popping up almost every 6 months, and to expect a company to hold back its development to maintain support for ever increasingly out-dated hardware is short sighted in the extreme.
A good example here would be Microsoft and its support for XP, after god knows how many years it has finally stopped supporting it officialy. This isnt just because it wants to push its newer programs (although that is a major part of it) but because there are limitations to that software that would take either a major re-write to solve or would require every other software and hardware manufacturer to stop making new tech. And as anyone with an ounce of sense knows stagnation means death, for industries as well as for life.
I have read through this entire sorry litte thread and been stunned by some of the answers, excuses and reasons why people cannot cope with this inevitable change. Some have said they cannot afford an upgrade due to low wages, I say thats rubbish. Saving $5/ú5 a week or fortnight is not that hard, even on a low wage. Make sacrifices elsewhere, live on beans and toast for 2 days a week, quit smoking, quit drinking if you do any of those things.
Some claim that they would need to spend hundreds of ú/$'s upgrading their hardware, also rubbish. After searching for 30 seconds for "SSE2 compatible CPU's" I found a list of matching items, I then ran that list through google and found hardware bundles for cpu and mobo. Within 10 minutes I found dozens of bundles, all for under ú50 and then found the same for the USA, Australia, and most of the rest of Europe. And before anyone else trys to use the old "things are cheaper in Europe because of the exchange rate, I ran my searches to only find products within specific countries. So for English parts I searched only for products IN England, same for the USA etc, etc. This eliminates any exchange rate cobblers as the buyers would be buying with their own currency from someone selling in their own currency.
The way I see it there are only two valid reasons for complaint. First that some people are not as adept at hardware configuration as others and may incur extra costs to get the new hardware set up, though even this can be rectified with a few internet searches regarding self builds and upgrading. Learn something new maybe? Secondly, and most understandably, the fact that people were given 36 hours notice about what does, for a very small percentage of users overall, constitute a game breaking change. This was very poorly handled by CCP no matter which way you look at it, and I am saddened that such a small amount of effort was made to reduce the impact of this problem.
For the TL;DR crowd.
Hardware is cheap, saving is not hard though it may take time and you do have my honest heartfelt sympathies. This DOES NOT affect a large portion of the playerbase, please don't exagerate. Those affected did deserve more notice than they got and this needs addressing.
Also, people need to chill the heck out.

If your PC is that old I'm surprised you can even browse the web with it.
Anyway, if you can't afford to pick up a 100$ PC from a junkyard then I guess it sucks to be you, but homeless people can't play EVE either, it's not a god given right. If you have ZERO income then wtf are you doing playing EVE anyway.

So whos wise idea was it to exclude a large proportion of your devoted PAYING clients by making the update useless to us. Wake up and re-adjust please....this is one P1553D off bunny

The first SSE2 supported cpu was the Willamette Pentium 4 released in November 2000 for a retail price of $125, which btw if quite cheap for even a 'new' processor.
If you are SERIOUSLY trying to say that CCP shouldn't update their game libraries because you haven't got around to upgrading to a PC that is less than 10 years old you are CRAZY.
If you honestly think that CCP are in the wrong here then you should sell whatever PC you have and go do something else because playing games is obviously not for you. Not even with a console.
And as for why you only got 2 days notice of this.. The probable reason is that CCP don't even HAVE a PC that old to test with because anyone that actually wants to play a game would not in their right mind be trying to do it on something so incredibly outdated. God.. if anyone actually even tried to give me a PC that old they would have to PAY me for the inconvenience.
So here you are.. playing one of the most genre defining sandbox games you can get run by a company that has even made a parady music video called 'Harden the **** up' and your calling them out because your hardware is over 10 years old...
Deal with it. |

Why don't CCP just give you a one off choice.
1 - You can redo your character which means you can bimble around in stations to your hearts content when they release it (and have spent another few weeks after that fixing the update).
2 - Get your old portrait back but you'll never be ablt to walk about in stations.
I'd choose 2.

IMHO posts like this are uncalled for, have you ever had to live on a tight budget??? Have you ever had to worry where the next buck was coming from? Did you ever have a parent or a child become terminally ill and you had no benifits and all medical costs were out of pocket?
Last but not least, would you use a piece of junk knowing that it would be rendered useless in another couple patches?
Man I got to say there sure are some mentally challanged peeps here. Come on get real, there are so many variants here, you don't know crap about peoples real lives or thier financial situations. You should be so lucky not to be in that type of situation.
What I'd like to know is what gives you the right to say crap like this??? Did you even bother to read what you typed before posting?
I would not wish hard luck on my worst enemy but for peeps like you I'd make exceptions!

If your financial situation is that bad then maybe an MMO isn't the wisest choice, especially EVE as it is one of the most expensive at the moment for Europe and the UK. |

Of course that's a valid point, but who decides what is appropriate and what not? Who knows how many EVE players playing a pirate/criminal would run amok with a gun if they didn't have the game as an escape strategy. I'm getting very lewisblacky now, I know, but take a bum's whisky bottle away and tomorrow he'll be dead. |

Can you afford your child support?
If happily married, what was the price of the gift you bought your wife for her birthday?
Do your kids wear decent clothes to school?
If not married and/or no kids, can you afford hot water and trash pick-up at your home?
It would seem to me that if you have not updated your computer in 8 years due to lack of currency, then you are spending money on EVE that you should be devoting to making your married life better, or your kids life better, or if you are single, your life better. Cancel your EVE subscription immediately and channel your income into better priorities.
Now for the rest of us, we appreciate CCP using modern technology, and requiring we have modern systems, because that is the way we get the refinements we want in the game.

Edited by: Twisted Xistance on 24/01/2011 01:16:26 OMFG WTF CPP, OMG I CANT PLAY EVE ON MY ZX SPECTRUM......... how can ccp expect me to play eve on anything else except a zx spectrum! I dont want to get a pc or a Mac because technology scares me and I'd rather spend my money on other things like strippers, drugs and prostitutes. This whole sorry affair makes me want to smash up my spectrum... I mean omg I can barely even load this stupid forum on my 56k dial up modem that I got in the early 90s.
It just makes sense for ccp to never improve the game and as a result alienate and lose all of its players just so I can play eve on my beloved speccy. who needs fancy graphics, when you can just type "jump through jita stargate" only to have the screen say "you have been scammed by MASS CREAM iin Jita and lose 1 billion isk... you have been suicide ganked by the greif wave and lose all your ship and cargo" -First there was nothing then there was Xistance, then it all got kinda Twisted- |

The ironic thing in my case is that Eve was kind of a last resort in good games that I could still play without updating my ancient wreck. When I do save up about $200 for the upgrades I want I will be able to play the games I left before Eve - my "first loves". So upgrade or not I will probably not be back but it was fun while it lasted. Fly safe pilots and have the best of luck in your adventures.

Edited by: Diesel47 on 25/01/2011 02:59:00 So basically you'd rather have CCP failify the game for the rest of us because you are too cheap to upgrade your 8 year old CPU?
Even a 50 dollar used dell desktop off craigslist can run eve no problems.

I feel really sorry for those who cannot upgrade their CPU as required.
I am also not able to play EVE until i get my new comp!!!
Muhahahhaa
Triple core CPU, 3 Ghz processor, 3 Gig Ram, 9800 GT 1 gig Graphics, got trade in on my old machine too, it isnt top spec, its a cheaper option but compared tom old system its awesome (1.5 Gig ram, 4570 graphics card (guessing now), 1.7 Ghz processor running mmx!!) Still got Windows XP on it too, until they change that then I will upgrade to windows 7.
Seriously there are options out there, take your comp down to your local computer shop ask real nicely, they might have a trade in that would suit you (or parts of) and cost you very little!!
If you cant afford it get a job, wait til birthday, sell some DVD's or CD's on them trade in web sites, old mobile phones, car boot sale, wash cars in your street, there are a tonne of options to make money.

If you delete system32 eve will work on non-sse2 machines. I'm surprised CCP hasn't made this known.
