Players have been reporting an issue with ATI Video Cards and Windows 7 where the desktop darkened after closing EVE Online. This has been resolved by the AMD Catalyst? 10.12 software suite.
The downloads can be found here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/downloads.aspx
Release Notes: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst1012ReleaseNotes.aspx
We advise players to make sure they have the latest drivers and software for their systems.

Any chance at all that you can poke someone, anyone, that will sort out the "SSE* suppport" problem please...we may form a minority section of your client base but this is insane timing to say the least....you guys have been working on this for months and yet we, the customer, get 36hrs notice that we have "Sub-standard" machines. If you cannot help then will you please pass this onto someone that can, ty

DO NOT INSTALL CATALYST SUITE 10.12!!!!!!! I did this and lost all sound capabilities for my PC. After checking other forums about this issue i found it was quite common to loose sound from this procedure. This is very irresponsible advice from CCP! After talking to an Alienware tech for over 3 hrs, and trying several different processes to get my sound back, it was decided the only way was to do a complete re-install of Windows 7. Will do that and see what happens. Will need a fresh install of Eve.

I have upgraded all my drivers and am still greying. What happens is when I am on a mission or just flying thru space, the screen will go really dark. I mean REALLY dark. I have optimized my settings for performance and that did not help. I did not have this problem till the last patch. I am running the Radeon HD 5450 graphics card on windows7. Any other ideas as to what I could try short of buying a new video card? This space reserved for something witty..... |

I would like to add to this that I am running the ATI Radeon 5750 HD on windows XP professional and I cannot enable the anti aliasing feature. When I do it automatically gets reset to disabled. This did not happen before the patch.

I would also like to add, that while using an ATI Radeon HD 4800, I can enter the game but cannot see ANYTHING in space or in dock. Im somewhat nervous about downloading this update if it is killing players displays. --

Edited by: Teh Minez0r on 21/01/2011 12:51:03 What are the settings you guys are using in the Control Center?
Make sure you:
- set Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering to "Use application settings" - disable Catalyst AI (causing flickering roids/ice fields for me with ingame shader setting on high I think)
within the 3D options.
Didn't play around yet to find out what exactly is causing the problem.

no offense, but that Alienware tech was obviously an idiot. even if you use the hdmi output of your gfx for video/sound this can't break your OS forcing your to reinstall it. This **** was just lazy imho. Uninstalling the driver again and using a previous version would have fixed it for sure... Again, no offense dude. :)

Have dual ATI 4890 in Crossfire. Had the ALT-TAB desktop dimming issue in Win 7 64 bit. Was running Driver version 10.10 because 10.11 killed fps.
I can confirm that updating to V10.12 fixed the issue for me.

Catalyst 10.12 fixed the screen being dark after closing/alt-tabbing out of EVE. However, it's introduced a new problem for me that most people probably won't experience.
I use an LCD monitor which only has an HDMI port, which connects to the GPU through a DVI/HDMI cable. Whenever I install new drivers, I have to manually change the "Scaling Options (Digital Flat-Panel)" setting to 0% overscan, or else the image doesn't fill the entire screen (which also makes it look terrible).
Normally this isn't a big deal. But now with Catalyst 10.12, every time I alt-tab from the desktop back into Fullscreen EVE, the overscan settings bug out to their defaults. Catalyst Control Center doesn't actually recognize the change, but if you slide the option bar around it will go back to the overscan setting it should be.
For reference: OS - Windows 7 64-bit GPU - HD4850 Monitor - Hanns.G HH241
I'd be willing to bet the same things happens with Mafia 2, since it had the same exact screen dimming issue (likely related to PhysX). I'm likely to blame AMD/nVidia more than CCP on this one. |

Edited by: Craig Crawford on 25/01/2011 00:22:55 It's actually better to use 10.11 and run the game in Fixed Windowed mode because 10.12 are riddled with bugs (lag box, GPU stuck at 99% usage, etc).
This will fix the dark desktop without newer (and buggier drivers).

I haven't installed the catalyst software yet, but I have found a way to un-dim my screen - do anything that gives you the "Are you sure you want to do/allow this?" dialogue pop-up (like starting to install possibly dodgy beta video driver software) and then cancel out, and it brightens the screen right up for me.

It didnt work for me. I even uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled everything then upgraded them and still the dark screen. I filed a petition and we went through all the troubleshooting steps. Now they have passed me off to another GM who is telling me to do these exact same things again. So I know they are not really reading the petition or they would know I have already gone through all these steps with another GM on the same petition. This is how i fixed it as well. Does fixed windowed mode have lower performace? Whats the downside of using it?

There is no downside as long as you are running Windows 7 or Vista due to the fact you now have the benefit of Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) which allows multiple D3D or OpenGL windows concurrently. The only reason the desktop goes dark with the new EVE client is the fact they are forcing 32-bit colour depth in EVE rather than giving users the choice of 24-bit (which is what your desktop runs at). The only downside you could possibly see would be reduced colours though the change would probably not even be noticeable unless you really looked.
I suggest everyone avoid 10.12 (and the beta 11.1a) and stick with 10.11 in fixed windowed mode for the time being until more acceptable drivers are released by AMD.

My screen was super dark after using an HD3650, changed to window mode and moved contrast down a touch in atitray
Colours now awesome and running 20fps quicker :)

Edited by: Cantonious on 04/02/2011 00:27:25 I'm using Catalyst 10.10e with an HD5970 and 3x 24" display on Windows 7. Anytime I alt+tab or quit the game it is "greyed" out.
Solution is to run the "services.msc" panel and restart the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager"
Start - Run - Services.msc, scroll down to "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" right click and restart. Probably have to be admin.

Easier solution just do Ctrl+Alt+del and then hit escape.
- I installed most recent Catalyst. But still have the same problem, it is so annoying. I will never, ever will buy any ATI product again. This is like 10th game it had problems with.

I believe this to be a bug. I have this issue too whenever I create a new character, go through the character creator and exit it in to the game. No objects or textures load and it all stays blank - excepting brackets. Until the client is restarted. Then it works fine.

I have the latest Catalyst Display Driver installed (revision 11.1) and I have the same problem. This is rather annoying since I need to be able to Alt+Tab out of EVE sometimes and I can't work with a darkened screen.
Are there any temporary workarounds or solutions?

using 10.11 drivers myself atm cos 10.12 and 11.1 has annoying problems.
those 2 latest drivers fixes the darkened windows problem with my 5870 but has other features.
10.12 - Causes drivers to crash under load. example during games. 11.1 - Right top corner of screen, no matter are u in game or windows if u move ur mouse over the spot it causes stickiness and drops fps to close zero. 10.11 has the darkened windows on exit / alt tab, but work around that worked for me is to disable desktop composition or what it is called from Eve.exe of the main folder. The windows look bad after that but atleast no darkened when alt tabbing.

I have laptop with 2 videocards. lenovo y560. 1st is ati 5730 (driver 10.11) and 2nd is Intel HD (integrated into the processor i5, latest driver). I dont have any problem with ati, but there is a problem with intel! It shows that this bug is out of the ati driver. This bug is inside of the game. Bug report is sent.

Dont just go for 11.11 or 10.12 they are buggy as hell. Check if overclock has activated by patching and just turn it off works fine.

Incidentally, I personally experienced a number of issues with the 10.11 and 10.12 drivers, however, the 11.1 drivers haven't caused me a crash yet.
Get your drivers updated and it should be smooth(er) sailing :)
