They have frequent drills but beyond that, they just sit and wait for an attack. So what better thing to do than play EVE!

seems dubious to me the silos have net connections that could be opened to "public" use.

Originally by: Jurou Yuan I work in air traffic control and spend about 60% of my time playing EVE on the side.
I beg of you tell me which country so I AVOID flying there for the rest of my life!!
BTW Make sure you kiddies have regular exercise breaks of your'e playing for endless hours, 10 ppl a year die in Korea from thrombosis cos of video games, don't be an EVE martyr
I think you have to understand the context. Controlling is done in shifts, and relatively short shifts at that. The rest of the time you're sitting around bullsh!tting, watching movies, or playing video games in the break room.
I can confirm that any air/space defense job in the military (at least the USAF) is the same. An hour or two on scope and then two to three hours off, sitting on your ass, surfing the net. The coolest job I ever had was when I was a lowly airman in Alaska. One hour on, four hours off. The more people on your crew, the more people there to sit scope for an hour. That's air defense, though.
Tactical controlling is a bit different; lots of excitement for an hour or so but 2 hour pre-briefings and 2 hour de-briefings...I've sat in a de-brief for 4 hours before. Of course, you usually drink beer with the pilots at that time.
Air/Space Defense is where it's at for maximum f*cking around.

Oh yes, they absolutely do. It's there for morale. As long as you're not watching ****, go for it.

As long at the PC you can play on is not connected to the same network as the business side of the silo what harm can it do? Take the NSA or other spook related agency for example, they commonly have two separate PC's on their desk, one for their internal secure network and one for everything else. A lot of large corporate networks have a green (public side) and a secure red side network with very limited connectivity between them. It's not as if they have the launch controls plugged into the same router as their Eve PC. You may find that the connection is wired only and only in a separate room form the business part of the silo.
As someone else has said, you want to keep the person who's finger on the button sane don't you? So allow they to talk to their families and keep in touch with the world (monitored of cause) as well as provide recreation for them it makes sense to provide an broadband line to the silo. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Lol, the professor of Eve... I thought 'multiple degrees' and dedicating yourself to a life of scholarship and research would mean that there'd be little time for Eve during normal working hours?
Depends on how seriously you take your job as a job. My gaming habit probably added 18 months onto the time it took me to write my thesis but, believe me, very few humanities dissertations are going to change the world, so I don't feel bad about that. A lot of the people I work with take their work incredibly seriously but personally I find the idea of being a 'professional' philosopher (my subject area) rather weird. So I treat my job as a paying hobby and use the freedom it gives me to pursue my others hobbies and enhance my quality of life. This is what I consider to be living a philosophical life rather than doing philosophy as a job. Of course, if you are in a teaching post things are rather different as you have daily deadlines rather than a requirement to produce a piece of work every year or so. |

Originally by: Jupix I'm surprised no one mentioned the IT helldesk. All you do is sit in front of a PC waiting for calls to come in. And the jobs are mostly repetitive and mindless problems to solve. I got numerous hours of EVE in while I was doing a stint in IT support. There are some environmental requirements though, such as having the privileges to install EVE and not getting crap for it from coworkers.
You must be one of the password engineers?
I work IT helpdesk for a hospital and it's not something I'm planning on doing for the rest of my life.

I would advice against it if you work in a computer gaming store... Customers always want your attention at the most troublesome of times.
I actually got quite a few people hooked on EVE by doing some mining while helping people.. "hey, what game is that? it looks beautiful!"
"hey, that game you showed me last time I was here, I tried it out, steep learning curve, but really nice, like you said".

I'm a programmer, I set my alt up in an ice belt and let him mine away since I only have to fuss with him for a few seconds every 20-30 minutes or so. We had a member who worked an oil rig, surprisingly though he actually worked hard on the rig and only played when on shoreleave.
How's the connection on a rig and perhaps merchant mariners if they can get a connection going?

I teach at a university and all teaching staff is required to reserve several hours a day to office hours. Basically, we wait around for the off-chance a student shows up with a question about an assignment or lecture. After that, we go back to teach a class or two, and then back to the office...or home to play more EVE!
Other than that, I sit there and play EVE for the majority of that time frame .
I teach Writing and English classes if you were wondering.

Wait what? I'd be pretty upset if a freelance dev job offered less than $50-$75/hr.
Also: I got a lot of non work stuff done in college while I did the night audit at a hotel. Its for the win, but I don't think you'll make what you want to off of it.

I work as an archiver's assistant, and I could play EvE at work quite a lot, but sadly CCP does not allow that. I can't install EvE on the computers there, and since something about EvE folder makes it un-portable I can't put it on an external HDD.
