EVEologists, I seek you!
I sell liquor, but my at-work gaming is limited to one or two hours a day, and only in small segments.
I was told the medical community has "status monitoring" positions where your watching all the good stuff on the monitors, but also can devote 5 or 6 hours to online gaming.
Security Guard also came up, since they don't really have anything to do, its just a matter of brining your own hardware.
My buddy is a "Day Trader" but he also lives on my couch, and he plays a LOT of EVE, but he is also broke so day traders are apparently just failures overall =P
I need a job that will pay me at least $25 an hour, and allow for gaming.
I am willing to go "Full Effort" and get the appropriate degree to attain the position.
Thanks for helping me out, and remember helping new players is what EVE online is all about!

as you pointed the medical community can help a friend of mine work on a laboratory doing analysis, she can spent most of the night shift playing and almost doing nothing job related.
Also i owned a cyber-coffee for a while as long there is not much clients checking in and out you can spent all your work hours playing at comp.
but imho best job it's filthy rich you know when there is no need to work at all you can play non stop all day until you get bored

I was told by a friend who is in the Air Force that there are quite a few gamers within America's nuclear silos Not sure how much I actually believe it, but I have spoke with a guy who is a friend of my friend who is supposedly one of the officers in a silo. He 'confirmed' it.
They have frequent drills but beyond that, they just sit and wait for an attack. So what better thing to do than play EVE!

There was a network admin a while ago who posted about playing eve all day. He said his boss new about it, but since he was there to deal with any network issued and if he did his job right there would not be any his boss did not care. Not sure how true that was, but does have some advantages.
1) no one else monitoring your network use 2) Can make sure that the forums and the ports eve used are not blocked by the firewall 3) having an admin account for your work PC so you can install eve on it.

The only problem is you'll need multiple degrees (about 10 years in the US although it's possible to do it in 6-7 in the UK). Hopefully eve will still be up by the time you're finished but the Ph.D. stage is just like the job work-wise.

Isn't a pimp the one who gets slapped rather than the one who slaps? Also, in that case, a pimp can't play because his hands are always on the move. Maybe you'll get to play during downtime but I think that is the last thing you'll be thinking about. --------- The making of the new Jenny Spitfire |

Isnt the whole point at being at work is to be doing work? I can understand if the job is like menial and boring where all you do is baby sit a box, but hte be rather horrible to lose your job to eve if something bad where to happen to the box. Closest job that can probably meet your demands is however probably a Eve online developer but your more likely going to be playing on the chaos server than tranquility. I used to work nights as a security and customs offical for the port authority in my hometown. Mostly it involved monitoring anchored cargo ships on CCTV, once in a while we'de get a cuban/phillipian/hong kong sailor and/or deckhand that would make a run for it and try ninja-immigrating to canada, other than that 99% of my time was spent playin EVE.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the IT helldesk. All you do is sit in front of a PC waiting for calls to come in. And the jobs are mostly repetitive and mindless problems to solve. I got numerous hours of EVE in while I was doing a stint in IT support. There are some environmental requirements though, such as having the privileges to install EVE and not getting crap for it from coworkers.

I think you have to understand the context. Controlling is done in shifts, and relatively short shifts at that. The rest of the time you're sitting around bullsh!tting, watching movies, or playing video games in the break room.
I can confirm that any air/space defense job in the military (at least the USAF) is the same. An hour or two on scope and then two to three hours off, sitting on your ass, surfing the net. The coolest job I ever had was when I was a lowly airman in Alaska. One hour on, four hours off. The more people on your crew, the more people there to sit scope for an hour. That's air defense, though.
Tactical controlling is a bit different; lots of excitement for an hour or so but 2 hour pre-briefings and 2 hour de-briefings...I've sat in a de-brief for 4 hours before. Of course, you usually drink beer with the pilots at that time.
Air/Space Defense is where it's at for maximum f*cking around.

As long at the PC you can play on is not connected to the same network as the business side of the silo what harm can it do? Take the NSA or other spook related agency for example, they commonly have two separate PC's on their desk, one for their internal secure network and one for everything else. A lot of large corporate networks have a green (public side) and a secure red side network with very limited connectivity between them. It's not as if they have the launch controls plugged into the same router as their Eve PC. You may find that the connection is wired only and only in a separate room form the business part of the silo.
As someone else has said, you want to keep the person who's finger on the button sane don't you? So allow they to talk to their families and keep in touch with the world (monitored of cause) as well as provide recreation for them it makes sense to provide an broadband line to the silo. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Depends on how seriously you take your job as a job. My gaming habit probably added 18 months onto the time it took me to write my thesis but, believe me, very few humanities dissertations are going to change the world, so I don't feel bad about that. A lot of the people I work with take their work incredibly seriously but personally I find the idea of being a 'professional' philosopher (my subject area) rather weird. So I treat my job as a paying hobby and use the freedom it gives me to pursue my others hobbies and enhance my quality of life. This is what I consider to be living a philosophical life rather than doing philosophy as a job. Of course, if you are in a teaching post things are rather different as you have daily deadlines rather than a requirement to produce a piece of work every year or so. |

I actually got quite a few people hooked on EVE by doing some mining while helping people.. "hey, what game is that? it looks beautiful!"

Heres the thing, you can work as a freelancer but your going to spend 90% of your time getting work and the rest doing the work so you would be luck to have time for eve since freelancers don't get paid anything. I should know because freelancing and hiring freelancers is one of my jobs. You can work as a day trader but as you said its crap. I should know because I do that too and you kinda need a good 5k to get started and if your good you kinda dont need a job after that point giving you have no medical or other problems. You can work as IT but you need degrees and you need to know what your doing.
I highly suggest trying to find a stay at home virtual job. They are really hard to come by right now and you wont move up in the work place but you will save an ass load in gas money and giving you have a good computer and 2 or more monitors you can play eve and work.
Personally I am working on my aerospace degree and I have 9 jobs, (some our outsource). There is a load of people that pay me, well give me a 10% or more cut to find freelance work for them. They do the work, I check it, and we all get paid. I also have a crap vet tech job but once i get my degree I'm looking at virtual jobs that has me coming in once every 2 or 3 times a week or month or so on and the rest of my work is at home.
If your job can be done at home try to tell your boss how you doing your job at your house can save them time and money and remind them they get to keep the money you saved them.

Years ago I could play EVE at work to an extent. I copied region bookmark sets. As exciting as watching paint dry.

I worked 2 months to fully automate the system here, now i play 7 of 8 hours EVE at work.
Sometimes i have to reboot the exchange server, so my boss keeps thinking i am urgently needed here....

You're awesome. Perhaps inject a crash or two to let them know they still need you? And fix them nber quick and use that argument when negotiating raise in salary?

I am self employed and work about 10-16 hours a week (thats about 5 jobs)
So each job pays me between ú200-350 and I can fit in 3 a day :p
So if self employment counts then thats the best job :D, work enough to get by, play games every other hour. I am technically working everyday from 8 till 6 but since I get to chose my own jobs I can pick when I do them :)
So in reality I play at home while I am at work :p

We're not allowed to talk about illegal drugs on the forums. Just so you know.
I can vouch for security being ideal, but the years i did it i read book after book instead, which is probably better in all honesty; I don't read nearly as much now.

They have frequent drills but beyond that, they just sit and wait for an attack. So what better thing to do than play EVE!

Network admin.
I almost certainly could get away with playing EVE at work for at least 2-3 hours a day. Unfortunately, none of our computers have graphics capabilities beyond the utterly basic on-board chips, so I'd have to run Classic and even then it would be crappy. Someday I will convince the boss that my workstation "needs" to have a powerful graphics card... it's just a matter of inventing the right excuse for it.
As it stands, I browse the forums occasionally, log into EVEGate to check mails and stuff. If I REALLY need to log in for a skill change or something, I can use remote desktop to log into my home machine via VPN and change it there, but the lag between here and there is really bad and it would make any kind of actual gameplay almost impossible.

Thanks for helping me out, and remember helping new players is what EVE online is all about!
Start a blog about a topic you are interested in. In this case, you could literally chronicle your EvE adventures, everyday. You could use your in-game browser to give live status updates. With enough traffic you could sell advertising space.
I know a stay at home mom who blogs everyday about all the funny things her children do. She makes a little over 6,000.00 USD a month. And she only does it for a combined 2 or 3 hours a day.
Get a domain and and set up on a cheap server, see how it goes for a few months.

Vacuum technician at a UHV lab? sit around all day waiting for systems to pump down, especially during a bakeout, just required you to keep an eye on the pressure gauges and thermocouples. pay is low though

Move to Australia and drive a mining truck! Get on a nice 4 on 4 off roster, get paid stupidly absurd amounts of money, then go home for 4 days and play eve 23 hrds a day SOLID.
Turn ur $2,200 AUD ($2400 USD) into plex and monocle up ur chars, buy a titan and lose it. Queue up ur skill plan, go work for another 4 days and repeat!
Best of all, you have 4 days of not being near a computer, so no forum posting!
Thats my plan
