Hi,
I do not know if this idea was already discuss, but it might improve the concept of tanking in EvE. Can someone take damage if his ship is in front of the current target ? The idea is that a tank receive a part (or all) of the planned damage done to a logistics ship that stand behind him in the trajectory. Might also have module/rigs to increase the effectiveness of that interference on the signature. With the new Incursion's IA, I'm afraid that fleet might prefer to go with mitigated tank/DPS/remote battleship instead of structured fleet with real Tanks/real logi/real DPS.

This would do terrible terrible things to high security space. People would be Concorded for shooting at a rat and accidentally hitting their friend who got in the way. It would add a considerable amount of calculations to the server for things that it doesn't have to worry about now, such as doing position updates for every round fired every tick just to see if the round hit something other than the intended target. --Vel

As it is some kind of signature spoofing, you can limit that to people in your fleet/wings. About the huge amount of calculation, it is just a vector thing, and if I remember well -few month ago- some people provided anti-drake fleet solution with smartbombs.

That works because missiles are discreet objects with travel times already. Bullets on the other hand, are not. You would have to add those in, along with all their calculations to make this work.
Edit: And as CCP just removed the discreet object status from fighter bomber missiles, they seem to be going in the opposite direction in their efforts to counter lag. --Vel

using smartbombs those calculations need to be done already. shooting "through" someone is at least with projectiles and hybrids not possible. missles might fly around the obstacle.
just add a new setting (like for active/passive drones) how your guns should behave: a) continue firing, even if you hit some obstacl. give you a warning message about hitting something else. maybe the projectile passes through but is reduced in speed so much it just causes only 5% of damage... b) stop when there is the chance of hitting some other target than the intended. this would save you also from getting concorded in highsec when hitting someone else unintentionally.
yes, this would make pvp harder and moving your ships more important. good. |

Edited by: Glyken Touchon on 02/02/2011 01:06:46 The server would have to compare the trajectory with the location of every ship on-grid (less shooter and maybe intended target). For every shot fired.
That's a lot of extra work for Destiny, which can already struggle to keep up with things.
edit: make that every ship and drone/fighter as they could be hit too.

Smartbombs are not used en masse in big fleets. And even in a medium sized fleet they are source for a lag.
Quadratic progression, horrible thing, you know...

Thats by design. CCP didn't want a fleet of domi's, scorpions, and rattlesnakes (bascially your known meatshields) if motivated aggroing the sansha then everyone else comes in. Want meatshield aggro, unscathed dps in the back lv 4's are that away. Not knocking the setup btw, use it myself with a rattler meatshield with sentries while a torp raven melts bs's. Sansha was not meant to be an overglorified level 4 this would work on though.
Why this idea has problems. Lag. They are working the issue and I give them props. Still has problems with features in game now...adding 1600 calculations every few seconds (200 fleet bs' with 8 guns) not the best thing to do. Nor ever really...concord, using rocks to hide from ganker damage...simple fact that a sniper fleet 120 km's has to work through your meatshield to hit you to make the battle that much more of a pita doen't help it either.
