Since CCP launched their new Carbon character creator a few new websites have popped up based around it, I'd like to introduce another small one. I liked the idea the guys from The Babes from New Eden had (cheers to them), and came up with something similar reading the replies in their thread.
As opposed to The Babes of New Eden, my idea simply lets you like or dislike each portrait that is presented to you, which will result in a standing (from -10 to +10) and ranking for each submitted portrait. You can also register and vote for male portraits, and view a simple profile page for every portrait. Additionally, there will be top ranking lists for males and females, and for every race/bloodline/gender combination. To participate, just visit the url linked below and enter your character name + gender.
http://204.74.223.75/incarna/
Sorry for the inconspicuous url, i can upgrade to a normal domain if this turns out to be used :) Naturally since the thing is brand-new there will not yet be many portraits to vote on, I just pulled a few random ones from the forum.

Oh, are you guys entering a character first? It is required to do that first to start voting on others :)
And yes while anyone could use anyones avatar, theres really no benefit or downfall, its only to keep track of who you voted for so you don't get doubles.

Oops, that worked. Figured that was just to submit but as my character was already on there I didn't think I needed to...
edit: could use more support for Alts so that people don't get as many free votes. edit2: ranking by bloodline would be really nice to have as well

Well I used 'Switch Character' to put my alt on there and found I got a 2nd round of votes for everybody, including myself. (Unless I'm wrong and you've made it so it somehow dosen't count)
Maybe separate the submitting process with logging in, so you can submit a portrait you like without then having to vote for them?

Also, you can enter a Female or Male in to the opposite sex's voting simply by lying about your gender.
I saw a Woman in the Men's side. Not too sure what you can do to fix that though.

Hmm yeah it is intended to work that way.. I'm not sure I understand what the problem would be?

I think the best solution for now is a link to this thread to report erroneous genders

I was surprised to find out too that the Eve API lets you pull the characters' race and bloodline but not gender lol. Perhaps an oversight on CCP's part.

I suppose a limited api thing could fix that, but then again not many people might like that idea.
Limit by ip maybe, so you can only vote with one toon, not a complete fix but it would help at least.

Exactly. It's sad how apparent it is that people are boosting themselves up.
I mean, does it really matter that much? I'd much rather have honest results :/

Edited by: Crystal Avalon on 31/01/2011 15:51:53 I'm thinking the more unique users there will be the less alts will be able to influence the results, since each vote is getting worth less and less and the chance to stumble accross your own character in the first place is also getting tiny; so this problem may solve itself.

Don't know who your alt is but I'll confess I voted against you, because the pic looked airbrushed, I found I voted for images that looked more like real people, a touch of the uncanny valley going on perhaps.
Hair style seems to make a huge difference. Two of my avatars whom I gave very similar faces, as sisters, but gave them different hair styles so that I could quickly tell them apart on login window.
Leedha Lemour - positive score. Cassina Lemour - negative score.

Haha well look at the top-10; 6 of them have long hair while in the editor only 2 out of 20 hairstyles (not counting the 3! ponytails) are long, that should tell you something. People like long hair, it's asociated with femininity (not that it looks girly on men ofc).
I'm still quite disappointed that there's so very few natural/timeless hairstyles and so many cyberpunk/typically "fashionable at the start-of-21st-century style" ones (like mine) which we may find ridiculous in 15 years time.
I have no problems people not liking my picture, it's just that personally, I find her way better looking than my alt, hence my pondering about personal taste.

True, Cassina does have long hair but it's back in a pony tail to look business like, it's just not seen. I also keep screwing up the lighting which doesn't help. You getting it looking good in the creator and it just doesn't look right when rendered into a smaller image.
It's so very tough to make Vherokior females attractive in the new creator and god I've tried because of the background I already had in place for these two characters as dancing girls rescued from Kruul.
Those small eyes just don't fit the western esthetic, which is a pity because I think Vherokior females were attractive with the original character creator, and why I chose them in the first place for those two avatars.
BTW which is the alt your talking about ?

lol first i was around the top with you, now i suddenly got hacked with +50 no like votes in few minutes .
Yup I noticed that, you were ahead of me for ages and then you suddenly dropped to -2

hmm.. don't like the 1 to 10 system. too easy for people to just give 1s to everyone they don't like and 10 to people they do to have maximum impact on the rankings (which makes it the same as the binary one, except punishes the people who play honestly...)

Although I do like your site and the attempt to do something fun with the portraits, internet voting is easily manipulated. As many have said, you can simply down-vote to try and bump yours. You can log into the voting site using ANY character and do it over and over again. Removing votes because you feel they are skewed really doesn't solve anything.
It's all in good fun though...kudos for taking the time to put this together and letting us all partake. I really enjoy checking out all of the cool portraits that people have done.

Wel as long as enough different people logon and vote the self-bumping effect won't be extremely strong. There's only 350 participants now though, still I don't think the effect has a very major impact, although a tenth or two more or less could be achieved that way.
Although on the other hand, the very low scores on basically everyone - especially compared to the ¦rate the above avatar¦ thread - is quite suspicious. A 6,5 is already good for the top-100, that¦s not very likeley to be the result of honest voting. Effectively that means giving someone 'just' a 7/10 is already "bumping"?! |

I do hate when the forums are wonky. This is my life, for pities sake.
Anyway, I have an interest in this contest, so I've been comparing the scores between the two types of voting.
What I've seen so far, is that for the most part, the scores between the two are fairly comparable. There are some glaring discrepancies that have me scratching my head, though. I guess if you really dedicated yourself you could certainly manipulate the scores over the course of a few days. But having to make all those trial accts just seems not worth the trouble to me. Or voting and deleting the char only to create a new one to vote again? How desperate would you have to be?
I'll give you my thumbs up for this effort, Crystal. I don't think you could do much better.

I look at the top 100 Females and am really surprised that half of them are there. Guess there's no accounting for taste.

Also, a nice addition would be if the rankings reset weekly, so new characters have a chance at beating the leaders. However, there should also be a past winners page where you can see who is highest ranked overall throughout the history of the site as well as maybe allow the ability to search previous weeks. So someone can be like "Hey, I was number one once. I'm so sexeh "

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say? I just removed a couple of votes (about 1%) from about 5 users who voted only 1. All the 99% other votes seemed legit more or less.

The average scores are extremely low. I don't even get a 5.5! IRL I'm sure the average person would give someone like Amy at least an 8 and the ones in the top 10 a 8.5 to 10. A 6 should be about average, here a 7 already gets you a 5th spot and a 6 is top-35 out of 350+! The average is a 4.8??
So how am I supposed to vote? Everything prettier than me or with a better more artistic photograph a 6 or 7 and everyone that I think is not as nice a 1 - 5? This way rating someone a 6 is already bumping! I see the average dropping and dropping every hour.
I stop voting this way, a 6 is supposed to mean 'ok'ish'. This isn't funny anymore.

Well, Amy, everyone likes to think they are attractive. And they think everyone else should as well. But we all have different tastes, thank goodness.
Some people just aren't into the all American, big boned, square jawed beauty. Some prefer a more rounded, softer face, some like a little pudgy cheek to set things off and some like a big bold Slavic face to enjoy looking at.
Thus you needn't wonder about your scores or how they compare to anyone else. They are what they are. You should just go ahead and vote as you want and are comfortable with. Never mind what you think others are doing. Be honest. The more that do, will eventually make those that don't an insignificant minority.

I just refuse to vote this way, there's only 50 people voting anyway - of which a number of alts. And you're saying 90% of the avatars are really quite ugly because that's what a lower than 6 means. Well if I look around that's not really something I see as even remotely believable.
I don't really have problems with people's preferences but the votes they give are very urealistic, especially if you compare them with what's given in the "rate avatar" thread.
I'll come back when the average rating is a 6.0.

5 should be average or just about. 5 is definetly not average here, in fact only 1 guy is over 5 and and most girls are under 5. Just goes to show how many people just vote low on others to get their own char up. The other site for all it's problems at least avoids that. Plus voting there is more fun.

Maybe Adivah can show a graph of the decimal voting tally so you can clearly see how many people are down voting. If you see a lot of low numbers than you know what's going on..
Ex. You had 100 votes as a 1 and only 1 vote as a 10. I wonder what that means?

lol, that thread is just one big ego-stroke. Everyone stroking everyone else! It's a stroke party! Few people are honest in that thread, and even then you can't tell if they're just trolling or actually rating it objectively.
I agree that it will be hard to get accurate results for these things, too. Part of the problem is that once the site has been created, the admins start caring less about what people want from it. We finally get decimal voting (Babes just refused to do it?), but there are still a dozen issues that need to be ironed out, and the biggest one right now is logins.

Yes, it's working now. Must have been caused by the problems CCP was having yesterday. When I first got in the system, it was showing only the portrait, as it seemed to be doing with quite a few others.

The more of them are participating, the further I'm pushed down, too!

Hi Crystal
I hopped into the site to do some voting on the new girls and much to my surprise, when I was finished nothing seemed to have been entered. So I logged out and back in and there they were again. Waiting to be voted on.
Is it just me?
Be great if you could have a look. I don't want to get too far behind. The new girls are being added fast and furious, it seems. I just get too tired and confused if I have more than 50 to vote on at once.
Thanks

I didn't know its a hot-or-not vote. Im voting on the character creation. Im voting on if the avatar looks, realistic, lighting, background, uniqueness, creation options used, did they stray off the path of the 'default looks' etc. Im not voting if its 'hot or not'. I think that's why you have such weird results with these because your taking an subjective opinion and wanting a objective result. This just isn't going to happen...well with the current setup anyways.

Huh? What just happened? Do I think their portrait is attractive or- or don't I? I can't... I can't do this!
As it stands the voters are almost all male, and this gets reflected in that fact that the top females are "hot" and the top males are goofy or unusual in some way, forget about attractive. There doesn't seem to be much consideration of character persona, lighting, subtleties in posing or other creative edits that many players may have spent ages agonising over.
In short, yes, it's a case of hot or not. Don't hire gamers to be art critics.
Having said that, how about dinner at the Caldari Navy Assembly Plant tonight, Crystal?

Its hard to just throw up a picture and numbers underneath it. You need to set some guidelines. You need to put up a question or comment on 'what exactly it is we are voting on'
Well you do see that looks, realistic, lighting, background, uniqueness, creation options used, did they stray off the path of the 'default looks' plays a role, although not in the top-10. There's quite a few in the top-100 that aren't natural beauties but are picked on the whole composition. Like Dr Kelda, Kalrissia, Anne Arqui, ATARI BABY. An tbh I'm getting a bit tired of all the long-dark haired neatly made-up Achura/Jin-Mei. I gave you a very decent rating too, I like the portrait!
You should invite non-EVE people - preferably more women - to make an account just for rating, I'm sure the results will be a bit different. We need a lot more voters anyway, what's 60 voters on an average portrait?
And why so few blondes at the top??

Seems funny (actually not) that I'm being voted to last place in this 'Like' or 'Dislike' contest site thingy, I think I should bow out gracefully and have my name, portrait and record removed from the site.
Is that possible?

Notice how the shadows work with the darker parts of the background. How the arc of my left eyebrow meets the division between the two color splotches in the background. How my brow and cheek bone match the lighter splotch between the dark and less dark splotch. How the imaginary lines extending from that layer of hair match the shadows on my cheek.

It's all about taste anyways and everyone is different, especially when it comes to sexiness. Irani Firecam has a very striking avatar, but it's one of those that you either love to bits or hate to death, which isn't reflected at all in this kind of voting unfortunately but also why there's no boobshots up the top

You must be mad about something.
Looks like you have Forum Trolling level 5 trained. Also your cut and paste skills are excellent. Too bad you didn't apply them to your own character portrait.
Even I can see the picture of Alyssa Milano was to show the jaw and chin structure. I'll admit the chin on Crimson's Girl may be a tad bit long but it's not a bad portrait at all. Guess you didn't look at all of those other links that DeMize Cruller had posted or you would have seen how Kim Kardashian does her makeup.
I really don't think you should be giving advice about makeup or how to construct a human female face since yours is lacking quite a bit.
Originally by: Sader Rykane

Let's take a good look at the facial structure of your own portrait, since I'm not an expert cut and paste forum troll like you, I'll just do it the old fashion way, with text and a couple of pictures.

Your character's chin is way too small for the face, the cheekbones are nonexistent along with the rather large jawbone makes your character look like a squirrel with a mouth full of nuts.
Not to mention I've seen better makeup done on corpses in a Mortuary.
As for giving advice, you have no expertise whatsoever and since you're actually a male irl who probably hasn't been laid for quite a while, you should go work out your sexual frustrations in the game instead of trolling other players in the forums.

You mean they don't like Brutors and true Amarrs?
Civire do about average. Acura, Jin-Mei and Sevbiestor are totally dominating.

As for the "smoky eye" crap? Did you take a look at her image and realize even she's not using that much, nowhere near the amount that the "smoky eye" image is using and theres a reason for that.
As for the the facial structure...

How can you tell me I'm wrong while admitting I was right?
Nope, not my Alt.
FYI, I didn't avoid anything and just commented on everything. That picture of Kim Kardashian was posted by DeMize Cruller and I did look at it. The makeup looks similar. I'm sure there's other pictures on the web with a better view but I'm not gonna be arsed to look.
I think you need to develop better reading comprehension skills because I never said you were wrong nor did I admit that you were right. I just pointed out that you have no room at all to talk. Gratz on a job well done by leaving out the critique I did about your portrait. Looks like you can dish out the criticism but you sure can't take it. By the way, nice try at bringing in your Alt to try to prove your point.
Personally I detest Forum Trolls and I just call it like I see it. What I see here is you trolling another players character for no reason other than to try to make your Epeen larger. And I see that you are indeed mad. So what happened? Did you lose your nuts? Don't worry Squirrel Girl, I'm sure you'll find them one of these days.

You know why I didn't comment on the criticism on my portrait? It's very simple. It's your opinion, what am I going to say "NO U?" I can't change what you think so arguing it is pointless. I very much can take what you said because it really doesn't matter to me whether you like the portrait or not. However, you did nothing to prove me wrong because your defending a portrait you yourself admitted shares the same flaw I pointed out.
The simple fact is you don't have to like my portrait, and nothing I can do can make you but you can't sit here and tell me how incorrect I am about her portrait when you agreed with the same flaw that I pointed out. How does that make any sense at all? What are you arguing? "YOU HAVE BAD TASTE, BUT I AGREE WITH YOU." is basically what you're saying.
So what? I'm not allowed to have a dissenting opinion or tell people something that isn't nice? That makes me a forum troll? By your own logic you're trolling me as well trying your damnedest to insult and upset me for whatever reason. You need to calm down, step back and realize you really haven't proved me wrong here, or that "I have no room to talk".

You really need to take your own advice to chill out and seriously develop better reading comprehension skills.
First of all, you're really good at twisting things and statements around to try to justify your own point of view and make it seem like I'm agreeing with you when I'm not.
You said the portrait looked like a man which I don't agree with. You said the makeup was too heavy or overdone which I also don't agree with. The only thing I could have agreed with you on was the chin is a little bit flawed.
The fact of the matter is that I have already proved you needlessly trolled another player's character portrait with harsh criticism making it out like you're an expert when in fact your own character portrait is also quite flawed. The fact that you continue this debate with me trying to prove yourself right proves that you can dish it out but you can't take it. Since your own character portrait is flawed, that also proves my statement of 'You have no room to talk'.
What makes you a troll is that your intent right from the start was to be hurtful, not helpful and it wasn't needed nor was it asked for. You have no idea about common courtesy towards others and the fact that you went to so much trouble to cut and paste some pictures and go to the extreme with your so called expert opinion also makes you a troll.
Obviously my opinion of your portrait has indeed insulted you and seemed to have made you even more upset or you'd just let this go and not continue this banter back and forth. You can try to twist my statements around again and say you don't care what I think but the fact of the matter is you just can't let this go. Since you seem so damned determined to try to prove to me that you're right when in fact you wronged somebody else, this tells me that you're immature and have no commonsense whatsoever.
Yes I did troll you a little bit with the Squirrel Girl stuff which definitely hit home. We could keep doing this but I've already proved my point. I'm tired of this whole discussion with you so I'm going to be the mature one here and no longer respond to anymore of your delusions of grandeur statements. Go ahead and troll on if that floats your boat, just don't get your panties in a bunch when somebody calls you on it in the future.

I want you to read the next couple quotes slowly. Read them twice if need be.
Quote:
You really need to take your own advice to chill out and seriously develop better reading comprehension skills.
Quote #1 you say I need help with reading comprehension.
Quote: Obviously my opinion of your portrait has indeed insulted you and seemed to have made you even more upset or you'd just let this go and not continue this banter back and forth.
Quote #2: You say I'm hurt because I responded to you.
Quote: Gratz on a job well done by leaving out the critique I did about your portrait. Looks like you can dish out the criticism but you sure can't take it. By the way, nice try at bringing in your Alt to try to prove your point.
Quote #3: You goad me into responding to your portrait criticism which I ignored because arguing it was a moot point.
Quote:
You know why I didn't comment on the criticism on my portrait? It's very simple. It's your opinion, what am I going to say "NO U?" I can't change what you think so arguing it is pointless. I very much can take what you said because it really doesn't matter to me whether you like the portrait or not.
Quote #4: My response to your criticism, which I only wrote because you insisted that I respond to your criticism in Quote #2.
Alright so looking at this we come to the conclusion that:
I'm angry and thats why I responded to the criticism that you gave me... which I originally ignored... but because I answered you after you asked me why I didn't answer it I'm hurt and angry?
What?

Hi Crystal
I have a request.
Due to my having visited the salon far too many times, I had to delete and start a new acct. I'm still me, only a new pose. But it seems that on your site I don't update due to being seen as a new acct. I can still log in, but I get the old picture.
I wonder if there is a way to delete me (without a black listing) so that I can sign up again with my new picture. No worries if you can't.

Forgot I'd have to start all over. Ah... the price we pay for our vanity :P
It's still pretty tight. 29 girls between 7 and 8 on the decimal ranks. And I noticed quite a few beauties that have yet to reach their 30 vote minimum. It should be interesting to see how things go over the next few days as they come into the rankings.
It continues to astound me what talent we have here in the EVE player base. The CC is pretty basic as these things go, yet the range of modeling and emotion that have been put into some of these portraits is wonderful to behold. I look forward to logging in each day to see what new designs have popped up overnight.

Either something wrong with the random number generator, or a program is way too easy to cheat. How some of the characters may have twice as many votes as the author of the site?

Yes it's perculiar. Although the binary (like/dislike) may cause people to vote a bit more for nice (sympathy, artistic) too then in the rating, which feels more like a beauty contest. Some of the top rated ladies look pretty although they sometimes also look like they're spoilt and arrogant, so more 'dislikable'.
So does this mean I look more pretty than symapthetic?

I'd love to trade Khanid for Civire anytime. It's just the picture that's ok with a lot of light and makeup and pose effort! If we get bloodline change for plex I'm the first one to switch.

Yes, Amarr are the least popular females, I think it's because they look like 35-40 years old to start with, it's very hard to make them look young and pretty.

I think, Rawr Cristina, that you are exactly right.
Let me explain my thinking and see if you don't agree.
In the binary voting there are only two choices. Like or dislike. So you come up with that sultry look and one can't help but hit the like button. So you quickly hit the No.1 spot and for the most part, stay there.
Then you come up in the decimal voting. Well, now there are ten choices. Not just two. I have already decided I like you but now I have to ask myself just exactly how much. While I find you attractive, there are other girls that just simply ooze sexy. So I rate you based on what I have already voted on the other entrants and where I think you best fit into the ranking. Lets say I give you a 7 rank, for example.
If the majority of voters feel and vote that way, you come out of it being well liked but a little lower ranked than the girls that were also liked, but just liked a little bit better. And there you have it.
BTW, I voted you higher than a 7, you little vixen.

You are a fresh canvas, Akita T.
Just waiting for the artists touch. A little eyeliner, a hint of color on the cheeks and a light frosting of lip gloss. You will be a sight to behold.
Perhaps a more classic and less imposing presence for the camera will soften the harsh edges as well.

Somethings not right here.
Brit
you got a little lucky in your first 45 votes and shot to #1, but then things averaged out as more people voted

I don't have a problem with where I fall in the ranking, if it's legit. But it seems a little odd that it took 4 days to get the first fifty votes and then only 10 hours to more than double it. That may very well be what happened. Perhaps 50 or so people logged in today that just happened to have the opposite view of the first fifty.
I'm not making accusations. I'm asking the site manager to look into it.
Or I could be completely wrong and I'm thinking of one of my other entrants. I suppose that as few as twenty voting 1/10 might bring me down that much. But I don't see that as a very likely voting scenario.

Yes someone is having some fun.
I seem to have moved from the top 2 to 141st spot in about 10 votes. Ouch!

It might sound crazy and as hell of a work but... If every character had some kind of graphical statistic, you could always see a sadden pick or a gap in voting. Hence, easily track cheating.

Hot-or-not on a animation portrait is to broad of a opinion. You get massive mixed results as you can see.
I'm more or less approaching the same way Emma is. It's not on the same level as the normal "Hot-Or-Not" because we have an active role in creating these characters, and we can make them look as attractive or expressive as we want.
I've settled into a system that looks a little bit like this:
For female portraits: Attractiveness - An attractive character can go as high as 7 on attractiveness alone. Anything higher requires that I see expressiveness or personality in the character, along with a well-done portrait. A not-very-attractive but decent-looking character will get a 4. Sunglasses, scowls, silly expressions, bad hair, or off-looking smirks will draw the score down. White eyes, clown makeup, or focus on large breasts (for females) will generally not score above 3. Males appearing in female voting and non-portraits score 1.
For male portraits: Attractiveness - The look of the character can go as high as 7 with no other factors. Expressiveness, personality, and portrait quality will drive the score higher. Scowls, white eyes, sunglasses, and hoods will draw the score down. White-eyes or characters trying too hard to look badass or intimidating will generally not score above 3. Dark Lords of the Sith and non-portraits score 1 automatically.
Crucis is probably the most exceptional portrait I've seen. It's a well-done portrait of a what appears to me to be a distinguished and experienced starship captain. Attractiveness 6 (he probably didn't have any trouble with the ladies when he was young). Personality +1 (He looks decisive and distinguished but not heartless, a commander you wouldn't want to cross but would follow). Portrait +2 (It reminds me of a military biography photo, done with a great deal of professional pride).

The way you composed it is beautiful and you look shy! :) I don't think you can even compose a portrait like this anymore due to the changes they made in zooming out.

I'm suspicious that theres some cheating going on, or non-legitimate voting. People pressing "no" just to get to the next picture, and not legitimately voting.
Some of these pictures only score 50% of likes, or less, and they are damn good.
Perhaps you can develop a fail-safe, so that if people vote too fast, or if they consistently vote "no" that it will delete all their recent votes, and lock them out for 30 seconds.
Or maybe simply have a cool-down of 5 seconds between votes, to discourage spamming, and encourage actually looking at the picture. ----------------------------
