I'm flying a rupture doing l2s atm, and plan on flying a hurricane at l3s to support a pvp habit.
Battleclinic has very few fits and I couldnt find many in game. Anyone here give me tips on why/why not armor/shield tanking works on these two ships for mission running?

Cane is an armor tank, haven't flown a ruppie since last hulkageddon and didn't tank it so I'm going to say... armor too

Here is a web site that offers a few different/cookie cutter fittings for most of the ships in EVE.
As you are thinking in the dual manner just remember that minnie ships can prep many ships to effectively shield/armour/or speed tank depending on the situation you plan on jumping into.
EDIT: Added the link and felt like saying hey Babbage, I like how your new face is a little more 'real' looking, but I enjoyed the flavour of your last portrait

I liked my last one too, but it didn't look at all lifelike. I took my one last shot at it and made sure I got it just right... even had the festive makeup

You can actually go both ways.
You can make a viable passive shield tank on a Hurricane due to the fact that Shield Power Relays are low slot modules. Use Defence Field Purger rigs and you have quite a strong shield tank. An AB, 2 LSE IIs and a mission specific hardener on mid slots, still enough space for Gyro's and TE, Nano or DC (pick at will) on low. I used this setup on both a Cane as a Fleet Stabber (same mid/low slot layout) for L3s.
I missioned L3s with such a setup and 425 T2 ACs, it's a breeze. If you salvage you can fit those on one of the the remaining highs, I used 2 CN HMLs for extra DPS, I guess Assault Launchers for frigs could work too.

Edited by: Cygnus Zhada on 01/02/2011 07:54:21 People have it wrong, mostly. The rupture and Hurricane (which people think should armor tank in PVE) work better as a shield tank, at least if you do minmatar missions with lots of explosive damage. The advantage of shield tanking is it's native resist to explosive and the fact it opens up low slots for gyros and tracking enhancers. On top of that, the lvl 4 battleships (maelstrom and machariel, using anything else just means you make it more difficult on yourself) are shield tanked.
Also, solo or small gang pvp ships tend to be shield tanked, in big 0.0 "do as you're told" blobs you'll need armor tanking but outside that not THAT much actually.
Here's 2 low SP shield tanking ships for lvl 2 and 3 missions, they work great if you do minnie or even caldari/gallente missions, they obviously suck at doing Amarr missions due to EM damage. regen tanking works on more ships than just a drake, most people don't realise this however. I left most things meta 0, some things I DID use higher meta stuff (tank mostly) and I would urge you to do that as well, the rest is up to taste and wallet.
LVL 2 Rupture, using AC's and NOT artie due to rats mostly being frigates so you'll have less tracking issues. You can switch between the different AC's (180, 220 or 425) depending on taste, fitting and tracking/damage.

Medium Core Defence Field Purger I Medium Core Defence Field Purger I Medium Core Defence Field Purger I

LVL 3 Hurricane, you can alter the balance between tanking vs damage by removing one SPR and adding a gyro instead, depending on your SP and your experience with doing missions.

Regen tanking stops working once you get into battleships (minnie ones at least) so you'll have to use a shield booster again, but passive regen tanking is a VERY strong mechanic in EVE and it works great for Minnie due to their balanced low/mid slot layout.

When you combine a "near-drake" shield tank, with the classic Minmatar speed-tank, you get a solid ship that shrugs off the hits. It will do all the III's with ease, and more than a few IV's, albeit the BS sized rats will go down too slowly to be satisfying. I took mine on Angel's Extravaganza last night with a buddy, and despite taking full agro in several rooms, she never got below 75% shield. If you want to make it fun to fly, swap Arty's for AC's and get right up in their face
Got the funds but not the skills? Buy a second cane and armor tank it. The natural EM resistances will let you skimp on the tank and fit more spank. Which is the Minmatar way, anyway
Beyond this, the Maelstrom hull has a bonus for shield boosting. Difficult to get cap stable, but a mighty tank once you have an XLSB perma-running with boost enhancers.
Minmatar have some great ships, that you can really grow into; the reason I cross-trained into them on day 3, when I first saw a small gang (Rifters & A couple of canes) fly by in Caldari space.

I tried ACs on my rupture and I almost lost my ship about 5 times, no idea how to use them effectively when against anything other than frigs. I was doing the L2 mission "Mission of Mercy' and it was me vs about 5 cruisers. I'd go in and they'd light me up, even with both hardeners on. I had to let my drones get aggro while I whittled some down.
Back to arties for now, feels much safer...
Thanks for the tips though guys! I'm going to save them ingame and try them out for sure

Edited by: Cygnus Zhada on 02/02/2011 00:25:20 You should be able to tank them, unless you let them come REALLY close. There's 3 things you need to know.
- you don't have to fight at optimal, at optimal + 1xfalloff you still do decent damage. So at 10-15km it's still good enough.
- shield regen isn't a linear thing as it peaks at 25-30%. So as long as you're not at <25% (or it's dropping SO fast it'll fall through peak regen) you're just fine. Have a look at this graph, it's for cap recharge but it's exactly the same as for shield. Forget the numbers on the y-axis and just see them as percentages. As you can see your regen at 30% shield is much, MUCH better than at (say) 70% shield.
- "even with both hardeners on", they should ALWAYS be on.

That has so much tank it could tank a lvl 4 two times over, and subsequently it does low dps. Also T2 rigs and fitting problems unless you have high SP.
Besides, using a fit from Battleclinic and stating that the top rated one must be a good fit is like stating that X-factor and Big Brother must be high quality TV shows because so many people watch it. Use BC as a guide, if at all.

I find this surprising, although that mission is quite notorious (together with the Blockade). I used a passive shield Fleet Stabber in L3s and I can do all of them. Just keep your speed up (AB is mandatory) and circle around them with ACs - your range is around 17+ km (1 x optimal + 1 x falloff) with close range ammo and 425s - you shoud be able to speed tank quite well (over 650m/s) which migitates a lot of damage. Just take out the webbers before they get into <10 km range and you shouldn't get into too much trouble.
Why don't you post your setup so we can give some advice?

QFT, I remember someone linking me that fit way back when I started and I laughed even then, his response was 'You can never have too much tamk', which is just so wrong. And Battleclinic is a poor source for fits, as someone linked above, Scrapheap Challenge is a much better place to stsrt looking.

Shield tanking is definitely the way to go if you intend to do missioning long term. The Rupture and the Cane both can be shield tanked with extender modules and purger rigs. The benefit to doing it this way is that you can use the ample low slots to throw on more damage mods (Gyrostabs and Tracking Enhancers). You can also use the lows for Shield Power Relays for more tank, although ideally you want to have as few of these as possible.
The thing about missions is that you want as much damage as possible to grind through the missions and increase your isk/hr. Shield tanking naturally supports this better than armor tanking, since you do not have to sacrifice damage for more tank and vice versa. If you armor tank a Cane, for example, you want at least an Armor Repper and two hardeners, with the possiblity of a damage control. That leaves 2-3 slots for damage mods.
If I shield tank the hurricane, I can get away with only 1-2 shield power relays, relying on maximum damage to kill everything before it can kill me. That leaves 4-5 slots for damage mods, giving you a nice 2xGyro/2xTE or 3xGyro/2xTE combo. The result is equal/better damage and better damage projection than any armor tanked Cane. It's also more mobile than a Cane using armor rigs.
If you intend to keep missioning up to level 4's, (which is where the real mission isk is at), then shield tanking is also the way to go. The best T1 mission BS the Minmatar have is the Maelstrom, which can field a truly impressive active shield tank, while still filling every single low with damage mods. If you decide to move on to either the Vargur or the Machariel (Marauder and Faction BS respectively), both of those shield tank as well.
On top of all that, the current flavor of the month for Minmatar pvp is shield tanked nano ships (nanocane, nano rupture, vagabond), so if you're intending to pvp, training the shield skills up fits in nicely.
TL;DR: Ignore all these silly armor tankers and go for a shield tank. You won't regret it. If you have any further questions, feel free to drop me a line in game.

In your case, I would train my shield tanking skills way up first. Minmatar has far more ships that can (also) be shield tanked than pure armor tankers. To name a few: Rifter, Rupture, Vagabond, Loki, Hurricane, Sleipnir, Maelstrom.
No idea how much SP you have but generally it's better to get some skills up really well than train everything to only to mediocre levels. "Im not nearly as paranoid as people think I am" |
