the newbs are the ones making fun of the guy for using heavy launchers in a lv3 mission. He should be using torps, right? Against 90k rats? 
I have very little combat skills. I'm a reletively new character and I've spent most of my time training learning skills. 8m SP, 2 are in learning and 2 in spaceship command. Guess what I can do with 400k in missles? 800k in gunnery? That's right, I can kick ass in a Raven.
It's not about skills most of the time, well, not in-game skills. It's about common sense and your skills with the game.
This is also something a battleship pilot should understand. When you align for warp you can't tell if your ship is aligned perfectly or not. The guy probably knew the NPCs were going to get into armor, he was expecting to warp at a certain point. When that point was reached and he hadn't warp, it was too late to align for a warp and he died. Big deal, IT HAPPENS.
There are also lv3 rats that can take on the best unprepared BS in the game. I went into a LV3 with my ferox last night, I can own any lv3 in the game.. I saw Caracals, only 4, no problem. They closed and I thought I would just take them on with my rails + anti-matter. I had my hardeners going, 86% to kenetic and 76% to thermal. Anyways, before I knew it I was down to armor.. I've taken down 10+ Moas at once without them taking half my shields tanking this heavily, oh well. Ferox was slow, I warped out with a bit of structure left.
At the time I didn't know what happened, so I came back with more ammo, some drones and I knew not to overestimate them. When I fought them again I realized why I had so much trouble, these CARACALS were firing beams at me and I was hardening for Kenetic. Not only that, they were armor tanking, pretty effectively. Easily the hardest LV3 rats Iv'e ever faced. Even knowing what I was up against they got through my armor again, but I was able to kill them all off. In an instant I was shown just how weak my ship could be.. and had I not been as lucky my Ferox would have been destroyed. If I were in a Raven they probably would've done even more damage (slower to align).
These were only 85k rats.
Understand what I'm getting at? You can be experienced and still be caught off guard. If you get mobbed by a group of cruisers you aren't prepared for, it doesn't matter what ship you're in.
