Hello everyone. I'm having trouble deciding which carrier to go for: the Nidhoggur or Chimera. I'd go for the Nidhoggur in heartbeat, but another factor I'm having trouble reconciling is the Battleship V skill. I figure if I'm going to have Battleship V it should be in a race whose ships I'm good at flying. My skillpoints are everywhere, but for the most part my strengths are shields, drones, and missiles. Due to the fact that I have virtually no SP in remote repair modules I'm heavily considering the Chimera, yet everyone seems to think it's terribad. Thoughts?

What do you plan on doing in the BS? If its PvP with a little PvE, go Minmatar. If its the other way around, go Faildari.

PvP, mostly, with just enough PvE to sustain ops. If I trained my rather fail armor skills up a bit I could pull off Minmatar BS's, yeah. My biggest strength is by far shields and drones, followed by missiles (I belong in a Rattlesnake, lol), so I'm pretty indecisive. Can you shield tank a PvP 'Phoon?

Edited by: DustiX on 15/02/2011 17:03:11 both Nidhoggur and Chimera are bad unless you want to rep POS shields the chimera is slightly better cause it have a resist bonus but the nidhog can armor tank. in the BS size the minmatar is pretty cool now for pvp (if anyone still use BS for pvp). raven is ok for pve and close range ganks
edit: imho you should train amarr, they have the best pvp carrier and the best BS lineup.

It doesn't take long to get armor skills up. Hull Upgrades 5 and the comp skills at 4 are all you really need for buffer tanking. So, roughly 9 days of training(Or 11, depending on your remap) for being in a torp/neut Phoon of rapage.

Yeah, my corpmate is like "Why Nid/Chimera? Archon ftw" but I refuse to train Amarr Battleship to V when I hardly use their tactics. So it's Nid/Chimera for me. Just looking at my skills it screams "Raven ftw!", and if the Chimera is better than the Nid I will definitely take it. And I love close range ganks, luckily.

I've partially trained Hull Ups V, luckily. I already have the skills for torps but not large projectile guns; it's fine to not use guns on the phoon?

You can, but the Pest is better at this if you got T2 large projectile turrets. ---- Nerf Tank - Boost Gank!

tbh minnie excel for both PvP and PvE, depending on the ship. Mael will put your shield skills to work, beats the crap out of a raven for PvE imo (more range, dps, and stronger tank).
Pest can be shield fit to be a poor mans machariel, or armour fit for good EW/Utility and decent dps. Phoon you're really looking at an armour fit, but has a nice drone bay/bandwidth, can use missiles as primary weapon, and has great utility.
Armour takes very little time to skill compared to shields. Hull upgrades 5 and comp skills to 4 and you're pretty much set for all plate fit pvp ships. Well worth the skill investment
Can't really comment on carriers, don't really fly em. You prob want the one with better RR if you're looking at PvPing though.

The Minmatar Nid has the better RR bonuses, iirc. I guess there's a reason you see more niddies than chimeras, lol. Very well, if Minmatar kicks Caldari around in pvp I'll go with that. Thanks!

you can do fine w/o guns but at that point a torp raven its just plain better, more dps more range. the others thing you got to consider is are you going to recive some RR if yes wich one (armor or shield) do you want to solo (need tackle or not) if you like station/gates gankage in groups the raven its much better than the phoon

Yeah, that sounds like me I'm in a pretty tiny alliance currently based in lowsec and we do everything in ganky groups, or if we encounter a force that's a bit too much for us to handle we play station games and pick their numbers off slowly.
Very well, then. It sounds Caldari is the race for me. The Chimera gets more buffer too, which will increase survivability.

There you got the answer, bringing a shieldtanker to a armor gang is a bad bad idea.

Armor is simply better for bigger fleet engagements. Why should everyone else have to train shield skills because you want to fly shield caps? Also people in here seem to forget that the main draw of the Typhoon, besides being able to fit full tackle and have great DPS, is the fact it can fit multiple Heavy Neuts which cripple your opponents. The Raven can't fit a single Heavy Neut without an RCU Yeah I am a pirate. What are you gonna do about it? Killboard link is not allowed to be used in a signature.Applebabe

True, though I know for a fact the squad I typically command tends to favor shields. If I go Nidhoggur I'd have more versatility, in any case.
I've only ever gotten to fly the Typhoon once, and it was for a Blood Raider COSMOS mission in Delve. The thing can boast an impressive tank, but really what's cool about it is its versatility; I fit it for shield tank, torps, and rr and it actually worked! I ended up losing it later, but it was a fun ship in retrospect.

Nidhoggurs are the best at suicide triaging super caps. So make sure if you are going on an op with SCs, its in a corp/alliance funded carrier Yeah I am a pirate. What are you gonna do about it? Killboard link is not allowed to be used in a signature.Applebabe

Guns >.< I will always favor torps in my fits, for whatever reason. Oh, and drones.
I do like guns for one reason: they don't depend as much on the target's sig. One time I was playing bait in a Merlin and two rifters started shooting at me. I had this Merlin fit for a passive shield tank and so the two rifters didn't dent me. Then my corpie comes in his friggin Armageddon, and for some reason the rifters stay. They pop instantly upon being fried by laz0rs. I was like "Yay battleship guns \o/"

Other than on frigs and destroyers, not much. I've shied away from guns because missiles always hit, so long as the target is within range and isn't going faster than the missile (rare).

Not as rare as you think D:. And you should try it out on a larger level. While they may not always hit, they are a lot more...fun to use. Plus instant damage and incredibly high alphas with Arties. True, even the slightest velocity reduces damage from missiles.
How's the Rokh? I've heard railguns in general are just...bad. And as I look at the Armageddon, it looks more and more appealing.

Just looking at my skills it screams "Raven ftw!", and if the Chimera is better than the Nid I will definitely take it. And I love close range ganks, luckily.
A lot of it depends on if you want to bring your carrier into a combat situation or if it's 80% Winnebago for all your stuff 15% PvE sanctum machine and 5% combat as many carriers tend to be, in this the Chimera will do just fine and even has some significant advantages over the Nidhoggur as it has a stronger local tank then anything ( including the archon ). Caldari Battleships also aren't so horrible if you're already trained that way heavily, the scorpion's a great cheap BS that people will often love you for bringing and looks great, the raven's a PvE machine but in the right circumstances can, along with the Rokh, prove to be high ehp shield gank ships.
If however you want to fly your carrier in more dangerous waters you really should go for minmatar, as fragile as the Nidhoggur may be you will be the most productive carrier on the field as far as repping your other primaried Nidhoggur brother before you die in a fire. The battleships also tend to present their best side in PvP, the Typhoon as a fastish, cheap, close range gank boat, the tempest as the wannabe BC and the Maelstrom which suddenly finds itself competing for 'best fleetship in EVE' suddenly vs the venerable Abbadon.
The misfortune of this is whichever choice you make you'll likely be faced with leaning a bit too far one way or another. Caldari BS V will insure your wallet remains full and that you can pay for your PvP easily where you get to fly some mediocre PvP ships. Minmtar BS V will get you great ships to fight in but probably leave you poorer for it.

Good points. I think I'll go with the Caldari line then, because if I can't get enough ISK to sustain pvp ops it will all be for naught. Thank you guys so much for your insight!

The Maelstrom is an excellent PVE ship when done right. The Phoon and Pest make excellent PVP ships The Nag is an excellent Dread if you have the right skills for it. The Niddy has some good bonuses, but is let down by its tank and its cap. The Hel is broken. The Ragnarok is an excellent titan.
