I've been playing around with EFT and I see that a CNR can dish out around 760dps without drones while using T2 ammo. Ships like Maelstrom, Nightmare, Machariel and I assume some others can do considerably more damage.
So why do I see so many ravens? Why are they so good? What am I missing?

Missiles allow for damage type selection for maximum effectiveness, never miss, and do the same amount of damage regardless of range.
If I recall, a CNR actually hits 900 DPS with 3 sentries.

And don't forget that they are easy to get into either. And relatively cheap to boot.

for the reasons stated above, I'd much rather have a nightmare for the good em missions, and a mach for the others than a cnr, but hey 4 battleship skills, and two large turret skills is much more skill intensive than one bs and cruise missiles. yes the Mael does more dps, but with ac the falloff is pretty weak and not suited to most missions, and arty has stupidly low rof and not the best tracking. Nightmare again a great ship, but at long ranges you are doing less dps and you are limited to mostly em/therm damage.
and with t2 ammo + implants + sentry drones the cnr is putting out over 900dps all on one damage type, and most of that damage can go out to ~120km.

To answer the OP's question in a nutshell, "Because metagaming makes you stupid".

Edited by: Richard Christy on 16/02/2011 23:04:39 Because you can sit still and barely pay attention as you do the mission. That lets you watch all that viewing material you've acquired via nefarious methods. Amusingly censored words:

No?? In my experience with Ravens, you need to pay a lot of attention to cap and shield levels.
Oh yeah, about my sig... you have now read it.

Fit an afterburner, and the majority of NPC (not Angels) will be left far behind. You will also notice reduced damage from the battleships.
When you reach about 90 km (I usually orbit at 105 km), NPC stop hitting you, and you can turn off all your tank. When a wave spawn pops >100 km away, you just stop and pick it off. Webbers are your only enemy. If you turn around at the right time, you will land at the next gate as the last ship pops.
I usually run out of ammo long before I run out of cap boosters.
Now in my Tengu, I warp in, head for the gate, and while shooting everything in sight.

CNR is missile based. Means 2 things to make it uber.
Its ammo has 1 damage type....rats have 1 damage weakness. Perfect match. Lots of gun ammo splits damage across damage types. If lucky, its the 2 they are weak to. If not...eat away npc tank slower since some of your gun ammo is not optimal to the rat. Kinetic weak rat, kinetic cruise ftw.
CNR not range limited. Assuming you run sebo or got pro electronics skills you can warp to that max range of 100 and fire away (its ship skills alone if you have no support skills for range will have you reach waaaaay out on cruise). No tracking issues, no fall off. BS at 10 km's, bs at 100 km's....lights up just as easy.
Run it rigor'd and unlike many other bs'....it actually hits small targets decent down to cruiser (best to to do at range). I come in at 100 and pop these at first...first few minutes its the 20 cruiserss who hurt you the most. 1 cruiser not omfg dps...but 20 of them bad boys spewing rounds adds up quick i have found. Rigor and tp even better. Other bs make small stuff more drone favored since tracking and falloff an issue. Aren't killing the cruiser dps till they are in drone range for many non caldari ships.

yes, sort out the cap and shields and you're set up nicely. 3x CCC rigs and a couple of Cap Recharger II's will help you to be able to run an XL shield booster on autorepeat with a stable cap. Bung on shield boost amplifiers and/or resistance boosters to your liking in the rest of the med slots. Reactor Control Units in the low slots can also be used to boost cap and shield recharge if your core skills are sub-optimal.

PDUs. RCUs only increase powergrid.

A cap stable CNR has poor DPS and does not do good damage to smaller targets. Seems to be a bit of a self nerf. Might as well use a drake ;P (or a nighthawk which could actually kill smaller targets, have about the same dps or more, and allow you to watch a lot more pron.)
