If someone launches combat probes that's more than 14AUs from me, am I able to see it? ----------------- My own Facebook page Cuz I'm Kool.

If you've set dscan to max, and it's beyond that limit (google tells me it's a bit more at (2^31) kilometres = 14.3550291 Astronomical Unit), then no, no matter what filters. |

If it is outside the range of your D-Scan, then no.

Keep in mind combat probes that far away won't be able to pinpoint you. If the probes are close enough to lock you down, you'll be able to see them. |

Ah. This is what I was getting at. Combat probes have a scan distance of 64AU so I wasn't sure if I could see them provided the prober using these probes could see me. ----------------- My own Facebook page Cuz I'm Kool.

He can see that there is a ship somewhere at more than 14 AU, but he can't scan you down and warp to you without going closer with his probes. How close he has to get depends on the size of your ship.

I don't know if anything has changed since the last time I had the OP's "issues", but back in time there were effective ways to have the probes pinpointing you down while you could spot them for few seconds max. And then move them off, so you really had to stay on your toes and spam directional every single second or die. - Auditing & consulting

The best thing to do when it comes to these types of things, is to grab a buddy and go test it. Combat scanning (except for warp-ins/sniping positions on gates/structures) quickly is an art form--you need to have good skills, good gear and be very efficient with your scanning technique. And, if you can't see probes on your D-scan, you aren't on the cusp of being scanned down. I personally don't sweat a safe-spot until I see probes on d-scan. Only then do I consider shifting position. Furthermore, even if they have probes out, a rolling safe that switches the celestial it aligns to every minute or so is almost impossible to probe out, regardless. Obviously, a rolling safe isn't available to solo players, but the only people I've ever been able to scan down were sloppy when they safed-up.

Im no expert but i have lost a couple of ships in wormholes and i have seen some pretty amazing ambushes, so dont ever think youre safe because you dont spot any drones on the directional - especially if you explore a site in a new invironment.
One very easy way to setup an ambush is to scan down the sites in an area, and send out your probes, if someone then enter a site you dont have to scan him down, you can simply warp between sites in a cloak ship and ambush whomever is exploring.
Om sure there are alot of ways to gank someone exploring, so just remember to stay alert and ready to get out of there

Edited by: Mella Elcus on 24/02/2011 19:51:57 If you're at a safespot then yes you will be able to see the combat probes before anyone can get a can warp in on you (if even for just a couple of seconds).
However, if you're at some kind of site killing sleepers / mining whatever you can't be 100% sure you'll see any combat probes, someone could've scanned up the sites in advance, or just use the onboard scanner (if it's a normal combat site as in everything that's not grav/radar/mag/ladar).
This basically means that if you're unlucky you might see exactly nothing at all before being ganked and podded back to highsec.

Edited by: Cipher Jones on 24/02/2011 20:01:39 I am 100% certain that you can be ganked by pro scanners without any probes at all.
The only time you will see them is the time they are decloaked upon entering the system.
I know thats not what you asked in the OP but I am just stating what I know to be fact.
My corpies are working on perfecting the methodology but you can do a youtube search on the mechanics of it all.

Well,
probe scan range is adjustable only in discrete values (0.5AU, 1AU, 2AU, 4AU, 8AU, 16AU, 32AU, 64AU). The last probe scan range value where your DSCAN would not be able to pick up a probe is 16AU. Not sure if it is possible to pinpoint a ship so that a warp bookmark could be created with 16AU range. Would take some really good in game skills/equipment.

@ the OP: unless you are flying a ship with an obscenely large signature radius, no one can pinpoint (using combat probes) your location without you being able to see the probes on dscan. I have a dedicated scout with all the applicable skills maxed, faction gear, and the sisters implant set. He can pin BC and BS using 8au probes, smaller than that usually require 4au. So, at the very least, you have the 7ish seconds while the scan is taking place to see the probes on your dscanner.
However, as other people have mentioned before me, the only time that probes are an absolute necessity to find someone is if they are at a safe (i.e., not at an anomaly, signature, celestial, customs office). The vast majority of the time (over 85%) I don't have to use probes to locate someone. Probes are a last resort.
No matter what, being diligent about watching the dscanner is a must, being lax in that regard will get you popped.

a tip also ; if you get back to a site you cleaned but it hadn't despawn i suggest you to get out quickly. only one thing can hinder despawning : a cloaked ship. ---------------- ** Wormhole Trading ** |
