what are the skills that I will want to focus on first for this combat oriented switch. I plan on sailing BC's and BS's mainly.
I'm not into torpedo's yet but have really nice 4's/5's mixed on my missles, I'm just not sure missles are that great in combat.
suggestions?

pve or pvp? missiles will carry over for pvp. Many ships run missiles in some fashion. Huginn for example is a 50/50 splite between guns and missiles. Motivated for dreads....you'll fit big missiles as well.
Caldari to minny a relatively painless switch (doing it myself, porgressed up to t2 cruisers and t2 medium guns). If you have shields down well...many ships shield tank. Ride them out till you have some armor skills up. Some armor tankers also run a decent shield tank with an open mind and creative fitting (mse jaguar runs nice for pve...pvp gonna need someone to pack a point because you won't have one). Some armor tankers will have you learn that tank in time. PVP will mean eanm II...hull upgrade 5 in your future if not there yet. Upside is scorp not unknown to to be run armor tanked in fleets (frees up mids for jam stuff), helps out if out the blue you want to run a jam scorpion. take armor comps to 4. Already threads about it being taken to 5...I'd hold off till later. I am anyway, ymmv.
Not sure how far you got with gun trains as caldari...if lacking high on the list. Will be your primary dps. Need good gunnery skills. Hope you didn't train controlled burst high...not needed for projectiles.

Better for station/gate camps. You'll want somebody else painting.

Doing similar thing my self. Just focused to get the t2 guns and all support skills to 4 and since I am missile specked now I threw the hybrids in the mix with the projectile training.
I end up with fully trained Caldari toon and shield tank ships minmatar guy then you can just add gallente frigate cruiser and Bship skill to 4 and you can fly the Angel and Gurista pirate ships with Minie part at 5 and gall at 4 level.
This is actually very broad range of ships that you will be able to fly on very decent level. Pod |

They both use missiles & shield tank and since blasters & rails pretty much suck these days your PvE-Rokh is going to love those Artillery guns.

Mainly wanted to make sure this wasn't a huge mistake. Figured I would have gotten 10 posts saying how fail the idea was...i will take everything to 4 asap.
question is... does standard missle or cruise missle need to be taken to 5...this unlocks the spec missile skill????

Minmatar using missles is almost always hugely over stated. As you are Caldari I have to assume that your missle skills are already pretty good. Besides the typhoon and huginn (lol at huginn) you don't really need missle skills at all with Minmatar - at least for pvp. The utility high slots are almost always better to have fitted with neuts and sometimes nos than missles.
Get your gunnery, armour and drone skills up to a good level - all more important to minmatar than missle skills, at least for pvp.

I can list a few ships and how you will cross into them.
Typhoon will use your missile skills (torps really), but to be uber it will need T2 heavy drones and some armour skills as well.
Maelstrom will use your shield tank skills. It needs big guns trained, but its an awsome ship if you max it out. Possibly the best Tier 3 BS in the game for station games or small gang fights.
Hurricane can be shield or armor tanked . Medium guns wont take very long to train into at all. Cane is fun to fly and is very versatile.
Along the way you might pick up a Loki or the Sleipner. Both are awsome ships also.
Most ppl fit all guns and then some neuts or reppers on their Minnie ships. Typhoon and the Naglfar are the only two ships I can think of that "Require" missile skills.

I'd go hard into gunnery, most minnny ships that I'd want to fly are shield tanked anyways so you should be good there. being able to use t2 small/medium guns go a great way, smalls for the rifter/thrasher/dramiel/jaguar, meds for the cane, and vaga/sleip/loki once you get cruiser 5 done.
some missiles help on some minny ships. but guns!
(note I have some personal bias to guns)
