I know we have Cap'n Quarters coming out during the summer, but what about DUST 514? Is it still on, or dropped like a rock? They said Cap'n Quarters was just one of many features hitting this summer.
Reason I ask is because I think it's a really neat idea and what has drawn me to EVE. Plus, that's my niche, Console FPS(don't flame me for that I was born and raised on consoles).
I think it would really work, but honestly, you can't have it be subscription-based at all or even tease with it. I don't know the whole logistics of how it would work, but I'm excited if it is still coming out. ================================================= What is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right. |

Release date for DUST was announced a while back to be December 22, 2012. CCP did not want to risk releasing a product before the supposed end-of-the-world on the 21st, so they made the date the 22nd. It is CCP's way of saying, "WOO! We are still alive! Have this game we have been working on for a few years as a 'hooray we're alive' gift!"
Of course... if the world does end on the 21st... Well, I guess we will have to wait for DUST after updating our IRL clones in a station far far away. -----------------------------------

I'm still not convinced that console FPS players have the attention span for anything that ties into eve.
The idea is nice, gimicy and something that made me go "ooh that's co..... look something else"

So in your opinion they're mutually exclusive, e.g. EVE players don't have a console and visa versa?

If they make it truly competitive then it can be.
There are console FPS gamers that are more than just COD drones. We do tryout new games a lot. Maybe you're right but they really need to have that great appeal; however, they could release it on PC, but maybe not because ppl really love for PC FPSs to be LAN-ready. And yes, there are LANs; internet hasn't taken over everything.
If you expose EVE to console players, then they will appreciate it and even play the real EVE game. Otherwise they live in their COD bubbles and you won't get their isk. ================================================= What is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right. |

I was raised on both PC and console.
I loved both, I admire what both can do.
The FPS console crowd is, however, a running ADHD joke.
They know nothing of commitment to a game, and most will jump ship as soon as the next big FPS comes out.

I'll be amazed if CCP manage to sell more than a couple of thousand copies of Dust to people who have never heard of Eve.
The console market is ultra-competitive and frankly CCP don't have the financial muscle to get the game on shelves in any sort of quantity or prominence, so I suspect it'll sell in the same sort of quantities as Eve did on shelves - ie not a lot. Even if the game is a technical marvel (which I seriously doubt given CCPs QA) people won't buy it because they'll never hear about it/see it.

We do know commitment to a game. However, every game gets stale if you don't update it with new maps or release a patch to fix bugs. You also can't charge a lot for such things like a $15 dollar mappack that includes only 3 maps(COD). Microtransactions can work when dealing with consoles so besides just selling the game there is more money for CCP to make.
I'm just a fan of this game and a fan of console FPSs. There are a lot of loyal console FPS gamers out there. Game companies just have let their games decide if we'll be loyal or not. ================================================= What is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right. |

If it came out for the PC, I'd probably buy it. I am not buying a console for any reason, however. I've only owned two in my lifetime, the original Atari 2600 and the Sega Genesis.
Console MMOs have pretty much been failures. MMOFPS games have also generally failed. DCUO, which recently released, is both cross platform (console and PC) and tries to be FPS like and has flopped on the market. Tabula Rasa, backed by none other than Lord British himself (Richard Garriott) was a Sci-Fi MMOFPS and it didn't even last a year.
So, yeah, the DUST514 concept as shown to us so far isn't very likely to garner more than a handful of thousands of existing EVE players who like FPS's who happen to own consoles, it's not going to gain traction anywhere else. CCP's upcoming "Twilight Online", if they spray it with teen girl (and middle aged mother) emo vampire fan angst juice has a better chance of success than DUST.
For the last year, and continuing through this year, additions to EVE are being dictated by what has to be in it for DUST to release. That's why Dominion was done. It's why planets were revamped and PI put in place. It's why avatars were revamped, and it's why Captain's Quarters are the next expansion. Huge mistake, if you ask me. EVE expansions should be dictated by what is best for EVE, not DUST or Twilight.

That's not the point is it? Dust won't survive on a player-base of Eve console owners, and it is obviously CCP's business strategy to extend into the massive console customer pool. But those players, especially FPS players, are notoriously lacking in the attention span area. DUST would have to be ****ing amazing to grab a large amount of subscribers at launch, and even if it is, will lose most of them when the next big thing comes out.

Well, the next EVE novel, which will reportedly tie in to DUST, is slated for release on September 27th. Presumably, DUST will hit the shelves at some point related to this. -----

If the release of Dust is like the Incarna rollout, it will likely be released without multiplayer support initially...but with a promise of more content in the future.

I play both, EvE and Console FPS (in general a lot of console games), and guess what, i'm still playing CoD4. Why? MW2 sucks, Black Op's sucks, easy as that.
But of course i know what you mean, i played PC FPS for a lot of years, mostly Delta Force and Return to Castle Wolfenstein; ET.
I'm looking forward to Dust, and I'll try to bring in as many Console-Friends as possible.

Edited by: Lord Viziam on 25/02/2011 04:00:42 I think you all are missing a major part of ccp's strategy.. Dust won't be like your typical fps console game where you the player are not really "invested" in the game, and so switch to the next thing. If you weren't invested in Eve by you character skills, assets, friends, would you still be playing? I doubt it. This is what I think CCP will bring to dust. Skills, skill points, corp assets, friendships. I think if you put that into an fps shooter in a persistent universe, you will get people sticking around for the long term.

You're missing one vital fact in all your speculation:
CCP releases half-assed incomplete product even when they think they are doing a kickass complete job. The difference is now they are acknowledging it with their "phased release," but they can't get away with that even a little bit with an FPS, and they have yet to prove they can deliver a full featured product in one go.
You make your speculations based on what you want, but the way CCP has always done things, you'll get a truly vanilla FPS where the duster can't tell they are even a part of a bigger world.

Sorry, not unadulterated truth. More like unadulterated bovine fecal matter and a dose of daddy bags. Dominion was not done because of Dust, Captains Quarters are not because of Dust. This guy is speaking from his rectum and clearly has zero idea what EVE is about or what CCP has had planned since the original inception of the game. From the very beginning EVE was destined to become a complete sci-fi universe, and NOT just internet spaceships. CCP have stated that as fact, time and time again, but for some reason people like that idiot don't listen. They think THEY know what EVE is meant to be and where it should be heading, and the second it looks like deviating from that course they begin screaming that "The sky is falling omfg EVE is dying omfg guis".
There is not a single person here who knows for sure what CCP are doing, and where things are heading with regards to future changes. None of us knows CCP's financial status or whether they have sufficient funding and backing to properly market Dust514, but it should be clear to most intelligent people that a company of CCP's size and standing would NOT be risking the release of an IP like Dust514 unless they were pretty damn certain they knew it would work. Remember folks, these are the same people that started CCP and developed EVE from scratch, they know their market and they know what it takes.
So get off your high horses, stop spouting theory as fact and stop acting like you and your ideas are the only ones that have merit. Dust514 is coming like it or not, Incarna is coming like it or not. These are things you are going to have to get used to, or you could always just leave.
