London (24th February, 2011) - Wargaming.net is glad to announce that its free-to-play action-MMO game World of Tanks has set up a World Guinness RecordÖ in the category of Most Players Online Simultaneously on One MMO Server.
The record was registered on January 23rd, 2011 when the number of players on the gameÆs Russian server totaled 91,311.
ôWe are excited to see so many people playing World of Tanks and the new record is an important achievement for us,ö said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net. ôHowever, with the population of the game growing steadily another week or two would let us report a more impressive record as the current PCCU number surpasses 120,000 playersö.
Wargaming.net wants to thank all World of Tanks fans that made this record possible.

1) is it really a MMO? if it is, why call of duty is not? (you also upgrade/unlock your weapons/perks there)
2) did all 91kk players play in single universe?

Sorry, but WoT is not an MMO in the regular sense. It's a MOG, not an MMOG.

WoT is as much an MMO as Diablo 2 is.
That is, it isn't one at all.
Given how they argue WoT as running on a single server (ie, looser than a knot that hasn't been tied), Ragnarok Online still holds the PCU with about 1.2m concurrent players.

Are you sure that all of them were connected to one single server controlling everything (movements, hits, damage, skills progression, xp and credits gain...)? No? I thought so.

It's only PCU record for single server shard. WoT didn't try to claim the largest zerg in an online game - that title is still reserved for EVE, I suppose

Just because they are all connected to one server, does not mean they are only connected to one.
There is no ****ing way WoT runs off a single "Server" for everything. Much in the same way pretty much any multiplayer that isn't LAN based ever runs.

I think the record is still held by Stalin and H1tler. Their World of Tanks was much better:
Battle of Kursk
2.6 Million guys on the field with over 8000 tanks. All on the Russian steppe. Epic indeed.

Last time I played world of tanks it had less people than a BFBC2 server... Hell battle.net has like a million people on it every day.

If WoT is an MMO, so are all the battlefield games, Tribes, every multiplayer FPS out there etc etc etc
They ever fix the issue where you could get matched in battles with guys in top tier tanks? Cause thats a great way to turn new players off the game... getting matched 3/4 games with the enemy all in tanks that you cant hurt

I have zero video editing skills, but I'd love to see a video in response to this that would demonstrate the WoT world more accurately.. picture it, A Titan enters a planets orbit and fires its DD at the surface, blowing the planet into shards, the view then zooms in to one of the pieces and you see some tanks scuttling around, then big letters appear that say 'THIS is the play area for a World of Tanks match' then the view zooms out to a massive fleet and the words 'THIS is the play area for an Eve Fleet - Don't mess with the grown ups!' (or words to that effect) and finish off with a view of the galactic map that says 'Eve - the universe is yours' 
Someone must be able to make this, surely? I'd pay ISK to see this happen!

they fixed that (mostly) a while ago, you mostly get put with players within a few tiers of your tank. then again I haven't played in months, kinda burnt out of it.
I love the matches where my Leopard is the highest teir tank, racked up 8 kills in one of them matches
