I noticed a player with an obscene name in local and it made me wonder why CCP allow these to be created in the first place, and given how easy it would be to add a block list at the name creation point, makes me wonder if CCP don't care or ever spent time doing some occasional character name searches to see what has been created over time.
Is there no active moderation by CCP to remove these accounts that appear to be a joke in the first place, made by some dolt just to see if it can be done.
Have a search for [p$*o] [c$*t] choose your poison, there are some that are quite nasty. I understand that player interactions are not ESRB rated but the character names are not an interaction, but a persistent element of the game.
I also know it's given that I am a prude and immature, I live in my Mom's basement etc etc, to save the usual protagonists the bother. Any thoughts?

You can petition them to have their name changed if you find it really offensive. I'm not sure why they wouldn't have put in filters, perhaps they assumed the playerbase would be more mature? (yeah, yeah, I know, I know) .

To speak plainly about your concern to the best I know..."charater names" are considered part of the online experience by the ESRB rating system...however unfortunate that is or not, is solely up to the individual to decide.

Basically because this isn't WoW. Allow me to explain.
Eve Online is a niche game with a small (comparitively) player base, who (on average) tend to be above the age of majority in the country they reside in. What this means is that CCP is far less likely to get sued by someone's mom than say, Microsoft (XBox Live) or Blizzard(World of Warcraft) because little Timmy asks what "Bl0wMyPen1s" means.
CCP therefore left it up to that same player base to police itself, and that seems to work out fairly good, at least for the most part. Truly offensive names get reported and changed, the borderline ones probably not so much.
I expect that should Eve Online ever reach Wow-like subscription levels, the status quo would change and they would implement some kind of name filter. Then again, maybe not - CCP tends to do things their way. --Vel

Regex-based filters are usually stupid and filter things they shouldn't be filtering. Ask anyone who lives in S****horpe in the UK.
These forums are no exception, although at least the word "cockpit" has been fixed. But don't get too ****y because you'll be in filter trouble!

This one time we got a noob char into our corp called vaginal discharge. We tried VD, but each time we called his name somebody would crack up laughing, so we asked him to make a new char with another name. He did and all was well.

I;ve enevr seen any offensive names in eve but you really think they can make a filter that will filter out everything? I;ve sen players flyingw ith names that mean nothing to me yet my italian/hugarian/german friends tell me that the name is rude they can;t account for every language used in this game.

I would imagine there are WoW players who get odd twitches when you mention the word therapist. ------------------------------------------------ Quafe is people! Welcome to eve where your sensibilities are a liability |

Not to rain on your soapbox, but the average age of people who play wow is a bit higher than the average age of people who play EVE. 29 for wow and 28 for EVE according to the googling machine.
WOW may invest in a tougher word filter at character creation, but as anybody knows, a filter on a computer program won't stop people from saying obscene things if they want to get "creative". In the end, its customer complaints that drive both game's GMs to censor offensive names.

Used to be when your character name was nerfed by a GM, they'd rename it to Caldari Citizen NNNN (or Gallente, etc) where NNNN was a unique number. It was the only way to get a character name with 3 words in it. Sometime ago, they changed the nerfing to CaldariCitizen NNNN, collapsing it to 2 words.
But now we can create characters with 3 names. I wonder if Gallente Citizen 99423 would be permitted by the new character creator?

Considering how the retards working for CCP can fuck up the simplest shit, like a forum profanity filter (see what I did here ), how do you expect them to solve a problem that is actually harder than you make it be. (think offensive in other language, not offensive in other language but being offensive in another, a la Fucking, Austria).
It's actually a very hard problem, not least because obscenity got a very interesting judicial history and vary widely by time and location, so how do you get a common ground in a game played worldwide?

I find it highly annoying to see people with all lower case names. You do have the 2 seconds to use proper capitalizaton, so I can only assume you don't care about your permanent name (in which case you shouldn't mind having it changed) or you are making a joke (in which case it should be changed).
This makes you, karl serebrier, a troll for coming to the forums, complaining about other people's name. </sarcasm>
But seriously: Would you like to be petitioned because someone thinks you have a stupid name yourself?

I don't care if people give themselves silly names. If that's the only way they can get their satisfaction so be it.
But names I see which are clearly intended to hurt or even rascist I just petition and continue playing the game.

It's not about being offended. It's about having a laugh with Kids/idiots who come up with these cool, witty and edgy names just because they're so cool and edgy.
If I see a name I'm fairly sure won't last very long when a GM sees it I check the character's age, if he's older I'll add him as contact, petition right away and laugh in his general direction when 3 days later shows up as Caldari Citizen 3948573. If he's very young I'll add him to my contacts, wait a few months till he's actually higher SP, in a corp etc etc. THEN I petition him.
You want to have a silly name that's dumb but quite witty in certain circles? Deal with the consequences.
