It sounds like the scale of this is way beyond previous years, congrats for that. Given the size of the thing you are hoping to produce this year I think 1 plex is probably reasonable, just hope it goes smoothly or there'll be quite some backlash!
If you even think of charging for the alliance tournament HD stream though .. Don't go that path.
Don't worry, a micro transaction will show up in some form for the AT. It may not be paying for HD but they will sneak one in there.
Edit: PLEX for BEHIND THE SCENES CONTENT!
Shut up and go the hell away you whining miserable little bastard

it is really interesting seeing a few people that are involved in the production industry comment (like myself).
There is a lot of "fake HD" out there right now. As mentioned, I dought that they are running around with RED cameras :)
20$ is way to much. Ask your self if you are doing this for profit, or as a marketing expense? Plex is a good idea but only for the "old/rich" players.
Comparisons to blizzard are useless. When you have there user base, then come and back and chat, until then realize they are 100 times bigger and THE gold standard in the industry. Carefull what you wish for, I am pretty sure eve would "insta pop" if they tried logging in that user data base.
End of the day- this is a money grab. Sure it costs a lot for "productions", but netflix gives me 24/7 HD content all month for 8$

Lets put things into perspective here;
Last week I was at CeBit as part of a team of around 50 people who were streaming HD content for around six hours a day for five days straight. This involved a 100ft wide stage, a jib (camera crane) and more content then you can wag a stick at.
The SD stream was free like always, the HD stream for the entire event? 6 Euro's, with a 3 Euro special for the final day.
Now before you start screaming bloody murder, I would like to point out that the reason of these kind of low costs is because we were backed by globally established companies like Intel, Razer and Deutsche Post. The cost for the HD stream would have been significantly higher if those companies weren't there to back the event. Hardware wise we're talking about a 300k investment plus bandwith plus event costs.
CCP apparently feels that the value of their hd content is worth the plex, and to be honest I personally doubt that is the case. However the fact that they make the HD content available for free in the aftermath balances it perfectly.

What a sickening insightful look to what the future holds for us.
To be quite honest. It's the first step down a slippery slope.
And let's not forget the bundling - people who buy the stream for the HD content can be counted as customers who support vanity microtransactions, and vice versa.

Happy to pay for the HD as I can't be there..but can't spend the day watching my PC for the same reason....eg kids :-)

We're looking into adding that feature but I can't say for sure now. We are also considering replaying the whole feed at the end of the day if that is of interested to people?
Ok, so for what it's worth I am personally happy to sped the cash, but being a 'mature' gamer I am going to want to watch the content when it fits with life so you can x me up if you add the feature.
The re-run after again is not much use, I would want separate videos that I can start and stop at will. Not that interested in watching the party and the interviews if I can't watch the steam but would want the lectures and break outs.
Finally, I really hope that for us paying watchers the we get a direct view of any videos or demos and not a camera 40 feet back!
Thanks

i had a nice post going but somehow it deleted itself. so to sum up my thoughts..
20$ is steep. i was instantly about to buy the hd streem because i just bought my first hd tv.. 2 days for the "stream".. i pay 20$ to watch a 1 time stream that i might get a few hours to watch.. that sounds rather ****ty.. will our purchase come with a download as well as a virtual t-shirt? i'd like to be able to watch the whole thing for 20$.. will this be full hd? for that price i'd expect some pretty damn good quality.. 1080p would be a must.. for 20$ we should get any left over t-shirts from fanfest.. just a thought.. or if anything, any eve t-shirt from the store.. just give whatever you have excess of or doesn't sell well..
i was totally ready to pay cash for this.. i was expecting a fair price of 9.99 or 10$ but i don't thing i can justify 20$ for a 1 time viewing...

When and where can we get a programming schedule for the live feed? p.s. I for one am happy to have the opportunity to pay for enhanced viewing options. It never ceases to amaze me that this community of forum curmudgeons can complain about every freebie, every addition of choices, every enhancement that they dont feel is exactly what they prefer. CCP, MOST of us do appreciate it when you try to give us more, rather than less, and we dont begrudge you trying to recover your costs (or, heaven forbid, even making a buck out of it). Keep up the good work.

SD stream is free but for the HD content we have to pay like 15 dollars? That's a little out of proportion, don't you think? I know that streaming HD content can be pretty pricey but 15 dollars is a bit much, even for a live stream.
Having said that I probably won't be watching anyway. I'll just catch the highlights on Youtube, probably in HD, when it's over ;).

It's fanfest, you are going to plug your product the whole time, Something which you are already selling.
And a Virtual T-Shirt? Cute. Will Justin Beiber be performing at fan fest?

Hey guys,
We will be putting up an FAQ page about this on the Fanfest site shortly, but for those who can't wait, this is what we are looking at regarding stream quality:
For those who have purchased the HD stream, you will get 3 options: - 720p, ~1500k / sec - 720p, ~1000k / sec - 480p, ~750k / sec
These are of course subject to tweaking over the coming week but they are around the bitrates we are aiming for, and they should cater to the highest number of people .
For the free stream, we are aiming for around 300k/s to ensure the highest number of people can view it.
Overall, this will result in similar quality to the last Alliance Tournament (for those who remember that), and is be largely based on the same technologies. It will require an Adobe Flash capable web browser.
Cheers, Mindstar -- |

Gosh.. making isk for one plex can be done in 3-4 hours in empire, at the same time while you drinking beer and shiptoasting on forums. If you cant imagine this without bot in your erotic fantasies - you failed miserably in this game.

Edited by: Kita Radeon on 15/03/2011 22:32:38 Wow... this thread... wow.
If CCP decided to give us all a free trip to Iceland I'm sure these forums would be filled with people *****ing about how CCP isn't paying for their cab trip to the airport.
Everyone step back for a minute. Think about it, If you remove the HD package from the equasion, the SD streaming is BETTER than last fanfest's. Which was better than the one before that. IN ADDITION to this, we now have the option of paying x amount of money to get more. This is not a bad thing in my opinion.
"**** you, this will lead to microtransactions" I hear you saying. Well, that is a pretty valid concern. Unlike most issues people threaten to unsub their 50 accounts over (Boost Caldari hurr durr) microtransactions are pretty serious. Is this the right decision for CCP? I don't know, it might be. If CCP wish simply to make money at any cost then it might be the right choice. whether you or I unsub from eve, CCP might make more money in the end via the microtransactions. The fact is none of us here who don't work at CCP are in a position to tell them what is 'right or wrong' for their business. It's THEIR business. They are the ones with all the data, not us.
That being said if microtransactions DO come about I will be quitting eve based on my feelings towards them. That isn't a threat, like I said if CCP decides to put them in I'm sure its a calculated move and they will believe they will make more money than they lose. They would have accounted for us. I just wanted it to be clear that I'm not defending microtrasactions :)
Also having been to fanfest myself ('08) I can say it is worth every damn cent(and it was a lot of cents). And I don't think CCP makes any real money off of it. I mean the ticket is not priced at a point where I could see CCP doing it for the money. I'm sure they cover costs but add to that the time spent by employees and the massive hangovers in the morning... I don't think it is a very profitable thing for CCP. And for you people saying its marketing, have you even SEEN the trailers!? Thats amazing marketing. Fanfest is a giant party where a few hundred/thousand people decide its worth it to fly to an island and have a lot of fun and drink a lot of beer. If it was purely about marketing don't you think Fanfest wouldn't be in a place that is remote enough to restrict a lot of potential people? And if you still think its marketing then don't watch the stream. Not even the free one. It is a pretty simple solution tbh.
I am likely wrong but I thought that CCP already talked about microtransactions and the CSM desuade them from it. If thats the case, <3 CSM and <3 CCP for listening. If not, just ignore this :) But I kind of like where this whole thing is heading though. Instead of microtransactions perhaps isk sinks (in such a way that it wont ruin the player economy) might work. You would still have the less rich players buying GTCs as they do, and you are not forcing everyone to go through microtransactions. The plexs for charity idea is amazing. I think this is just an extention of it.
Originally by: biggie fluffy End of the day- this is a money grab. Sure it costs a lot for "productions", but netflix gives me 24/7 HD content all month for 8$
Fair point. But there is a bit of a difference. Netflix doesn't generate it's own content. And the content they distribute is made for millions of people. Of course doing the HD stream isn't the same thing as making a multimillion dollar movie
Also it costs more to produce the SD version of the stream than last year. And THAT is free. If it was a money grab don't you think they would have charged a fee for SD as well? Perhaps a 5 Euro/Dollar fee for SD and 20 for HD or something.
Edit: Sorry for the text wall but I doubt anyone from CCP is really reading this thread anymore anyways. If someone is then thank you for a great game, please don't use mircotransactions and have lots of fun at fanfest for those of us who can't afford to go this year:) ---- All my opinions are poorly thought out and do NOT represent my Corp, Alliance, or self when I am Sober. |
