A lot of poor countries have/are being buried under the wall of water from the tsunami though so a PLEX collection could be funneled to the charities helping those people out.
So far the wave is around 50cm tall in the other places it hit. Looks like most of the energy was directed at japan but we will know for sure when it starts to hit the smaller islands.

Half a metre is more than enough to cause huge loss of life and homelessness and leave an aftermath of disease and starvation.
Thankfully it doesnt look that way this time. The waves just hit hawaii at 0.9m and looks to have done little damage. Looks like the new warning systems in the poorer nations have payed off.

Indeed a travesty. As lame as this may sound an earthquake of similar magnitude at the heart of Tokyo would have been far far worse. It could have been a lot worse.
indeed I have to say that if the epicentre was located on the mainland closer to Tokyo, the damage and life loss would be far, far worse. Even if the structures in Japan are built to whitstand earthquakes, a 8.9 mag is pretty much the upper limit anything bigger than a 3-story building that is not a bunker can whitstand, even if it's earthquake resistant.
Thankfully this will never happen as it was a thrust falt that gave way today.

Originally by: Hoya en Marland Btw residents of Tokyo and some other coastal cities are reporting "weird looking clouds" high up on the sky
strong earthquakes can create weird weather patterns on a small area, mostly because of smoke.
If this happened at night then there may have also have been a glow in the sky and other things such as ball lightning and strange gas emmisions in the build up to the quake.
