nuclear reactor is going escape worst situation now. They decided use seawater for cooling pressure container. Also observed radiation is decreased.
Press said over 10,000 people missing who living "South sanriku town". this is just one town... some place is reached tsunami after 0 min from earthquake. so many people couldn't retreat to upland place.
I hope army and rescue team saving their lives as much as they can.

Edited by: Baneken on 12/03/2011 13:25:58 According to recent news cast, most heavily damaged areas are still unaccesible and that the army has increased it's readiness from 20 000 to 50000 to help with the disaster, they had no input about the reactor aside from that no one has confirmed if the reactor core shield has been damaged from the blast or not and that the radiation levels are high but not life threateningly so.
edit: Oh and quake moved Japan 2.5 meters so earth tilted a bit more which will cause the orbit to change slightly.

Yeah it seems that situation in nuclear powerplant is under control now, overheating and meltdown are apparently stopped and radiation levels are decreasing... hopefully it will stay that way.

Originally by: KNK explosion happened in a nuclear reactor just now...
No it didn't. The building exploded, apparently. Reactor containment vessel is fine.
EDIT: And the reactor was never "critical" during this crisis. The reactor itself was shutdown the second the power to the cooling system was lost. Heat still builds because fission doesn't immediately stop after control rods are inserted, and due to decay heat, and just general heat left over from the fissions beforehand.

My heart goes out to those in Japan. The last time i had 10 Aftershocks i couldn't find my house either.
On a serious note though; I just rung my Japanese friend to make sure he was okay after the Tsunami and all he did was go on about his social life.
Just kept going on and on about a huge rave.

Regarding this, it was the entire Earth that shifted 10 feet.
I've also heard that the initial quake has been revised to a 9.1 on the scales. Which does make it larger than the 2004 event/Tsunami (which moved the Earth 8 feet), and also Chile I believe (9 foot shift).

If this happened at night then there may have also have been a glow in the sky and other things such as ball lightning and strange gas emmisions in the build up to the quake.

The reactor situation may have finally been averted but it is obvious now just how bad things got. Opinion from my understanding.
The Earthquake hit the sensors triggered an automatic SCRAM which shuts down the reactor. However the heated rods still produce heat that requires coolant for days or weeks depending on reactor.
However the unthinkable happened. The wave breeches the walls and flooded ALL 10 of the diesel electric backup generators. This forced them to use backup battery power which lasts for 8-10 hours. That quickly passed.
The state of road conditions forced them to use air transport to bring in anything to help the situation however the pressure and heat continued to build. Even a controlled release failed to get things under control. In my opinion this MAY have been due to the pumps being damaged after the quake and shutdown this is why they had the large explosion this morning.
However it is now known they have resorted to the most costly measure short of allowing a full meltdown. They have flooded the ENTIRE reactor system with seawater. I have to hand it to them for making this decision because this means that the reactor is gone. Everything that seawater touches will likely rust so badly the reactor will have to be completely scrapped. Also some are saying there was a partial meltdown. (Which means the rods were likely starting to lose cohesion and will bond to the reactor but not a breech of the uranium. Which means it was hours away from a full meltdown in my opinion had the measure not been taken.
This is not a "Failure of nuclear design" or man made fault. This is what happens when you get hit with an earthquake witch is the equivalent of 20 THOUSAND nuclear bombs AND have a major disaster just hours after that.

Breaking news meltdown may be in progress at one of the reactors right now.
A meltdown may be under way at one of Fukushima Daiichi's nuclear power reactors, an official with Japan's nuclear and industrial safety agency told CNN Sunday.
A meltdown is a catastrophic failure of the reactor core, with a potential for widespread radiation release. However, Toshiro Bannai, director of the agency's international affairs office, expressed confidence that efforts to control the crisis would prove successful.
Meanwhile, a second reactor at the same facility failed shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday, the Tokyo Electric Power Company said, according to TV Asahi. The power company said it was having difficulty cooling the reactor and may need to release radioactive steam in order to relieve pressure.
This is not yet confirmed conflicting reports at this time.

Looks like nobody knows for sure what's going on in that reactor right now, and is the worst case scenario really prevented. I just hope that new Chernobyl is not underway.

2326: The Japanese cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano, has been speaking on state TV. He said the third reactor at the Fukushima No. I plant was in danger but attempts were under way for a controlled release of air. 2318: US nuclear experts warn that pumping sea water to cool a quake-hit Japanese nuclear reactor is an "act of desperation" that may foreshadow a Chernobyl-like disaster, AFP reports. "The situation has become desperate enough that they apparently don't have the capability to deliver fresh water or plain water to cool the reactor and stabilise it, and now, in an act of desperation, are having to resort to diverting and using sea water," said Robert Alvarez, who works on nuclear disarmament at the Institute for Policy Studies.

"If this accident stops right now it will already be one of the three worst accidents we have ever had at a nuclear power plant in the history of nuclear power," said Joseph Cirincione, an expert on nuclear materials and president of the U.S.-based Ploughshares Fund, a firm involved in security and peace funding.
He said only the 1979 partial meltdown of a reactor core at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union were worse.

There has been a confirmed partial meltdown on a fuel rod. this happened when the reactor boiled away too much water and the rod was exposed. Without coolant it melted.
What is 99 percent means in my opinion is that #1 Reactor will never run again. Most likely it will be taken apart slowly or buried.

Can we keep talk of Chernobyl out of this. COMPLETELY different reactor designs and safety margins. Also the people at the event were unskilled and made terrifying mistakes during the test leading up to the incident. This is completely mother nature and the people risking their lives (Not from radiation but from pressure accident such as the explosion today) are are skilled as you can get for these situations.
Another thing. Stop the damn Godzilla references. This isn't a frakking movie! People are suffering and many more will suffer in the event of a meltdown. The Godzilla references are extremely insulting to them! |

+1
Current ratings by the IAEA on the INES scale rate this as below a Three Mile Island scale of disaster which was below Chernobyl |

It's not about the design, safety margins and event triggers, but the final outcome which could be the same as in Chernobyl. Hense the reference.
