The other day, I decided that I was going to start a new character and skill him up primarily in mining. Well, this character actually. However, when I tried to put a skill in the queue, I was notified that I could not train more than one skill per account at a time.
Wouldn't this defeat the purpose of having multiple character slots? Or is this some gimmick by CCP to try and force me into buying multiple accounts?

Research alts. Trade alts in different regions to check prices. Cyno chars. Chars you can use for annoying your so-called friends, without them knowing you're annoying them....
The list is almost endless.

Please direct me to another MMO that lets me skill multiple characters on the same account at the same time.

Please direct me to another MMO that has a skilling system like Eve, where you can line up skills then log off while they train.
Edit: And also, as to what MMOs do this or that, it's irrelevant. Did I bring up any other MMOs in my OP? Nope. So don't randomly bring up the subject of other MMOs when they have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Would you rather be forced to grind?
It's to stop character farming (to an extent). If you want multiple characters skilling at the same time then get a second account. ---

And this was the answer I was looking for and semi afraid of. It's dumb in my opinion and makes the extra slots more of accessories than actual character slots. But whatever, CCP's game is CCP's game.

Sigh... I guess you're right. :( When I get my lap top soon, I guess I'll have to buy some plex and try it out. I guess that would work better than 3 characters on the same account anyways.

I have an account with just industrial alts. I train them up to 5-10mil SPs and then they're good to go. So basically I'm done with the account in terms of training after 30mil SPs.
If it were up to me you could have 10 characters per account. Then I wouldn't need to get 2 accounts for industry...

The other two slots on your account are gold. Especially now that the learning skills are dead and gone and you get max attributes right at creation. The 'problem' is that players think there is some sort of race to get your main to the highest sp possible in the shortest time possible so they baulk at stopping training on the main to knock off a couple of trade alts or cyno alts or basic pew pew alts or scout alts or research alts or hauler alts or any other number of useful alts that only take a few weeks of training to be a benefit to your main.
Say you go the ebil pirate route and get locked out of empire and its lovely markets. Welp just roll a hauler alt and take a few days to get it in a mammoth so you can go shopping for your pirate main without worrying about concord interfereing. Hell my oldest account has a 90 mil main that literally flys everything except titans and has two secondary characters with one being a sleip alt for exploration and the other an orca alt for moving crap around.

Hi Obsidian here,
It's nice for the CEO to have an alt to officiate matters especially if the corp is spread out. Also check prices and manage stuff remotely.

Its either 1 skill training at a time per account or people pay $15, train up one main and a little bit down the road keep transferring characters...

I have a trade alt which took ~2 weeks to train up. I've been using him for months to make hundreds of millions of isk per month. Now he just sits in Jita and doesn't need anymore training to make me isk.
When I get enough motivation, I may make a 2nd trade alt, spend 2 more weeks training him up, and park him in Dodixie or Amarr.
That's what the other 2 character slots are for.

3 chars trained in research with 6 R&D agents each, that is 450M-600M per month selling datacores.
That's the purpose of having multiple character slots

except raising SP isn't "leveling", either? both improve character in efficiency. training skills allows use of items and access to services. improving standings gives access to higher level missions, reduces trading tax and allows better datacore research.
i'm not drawing direct comparisons nor saying SP isn't of significance, but character "level" is not one-dimensional in EVE. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

Same-account alts are great for price-checks in remote markets, couriering things to your base of operations during war decs, research, manufacturing, market slots, etc.
For many purposes you don't even need to give them any training. For other purposes you can get by with a few millions of SP.

You can train specific characters on other accounts and transfer them to your main account, hence the extra character slots come in handy.
And yes, CCP wants you to buy more accounts as well. I've never seen a game that so actively promotes this with special actions as "power of two". It's unprecedented and shameless but well, on the other hand you don't really need more acounts - although it's neccessary if you want to be expert in different aspects of the game within 3 years. And well, if you make enough ISKies you can pay with PLEX as well.

And I have.

OP is a perfect example of the new breed of ignorant players coming into the EVE sandbox and slagging off anything that doesn't conform with his views.

Actually, raising SP is by all accounts the closest possible equivalent of leveling in this game.
By your account my character has "Deleveled" because my amarr standing is -9.
Lets go ahead and compare it to WoW, because we know how everyone loves that.
In WoW, rep unlocks items and services.
In wow, bad rep gets you shot.
In Wow, Levels and gold unlock skills.
In Eve, standings/lp unlock items and services.
In Eve, bad standings get you shot.
In Eve, SP and Isk unlocks skills.

It is my experience that the traditional progress dynamic between experience points and gold had been reversed in EVE with Skill Points and ISK. That is, it is ISK that is the dominant factor for your progress, not the Skill Points.
So in a way, you can progress on more character than one at a time in EVE. In fact all your characters on all accounts advance the moment just one of them make ISK (unless your characters refuse to loan ISK to each other...)
