CCP Veritas's latest blog is all about fighting the war on lag. This blog is the first of a few technical blogs in the pipeline and you can read it here.

The performance impact on Jita is impressive. Thank you for your hard work on this. Now we can scam even more quickly than ever before!

2000 currently. We expect there to be plenty of headroom above that, but we want to see each boundary along the way reached safely before we raise it more.

No because such a cap would be exploitable to stop new pilots arriving in system. Sure lag sucks, but it sucks less than packing up a system to the cap to stop defenders/attackers bringing new forces.

Making enough profit on other stuff that I can't really be bothered to do invention, but I still have all my datacore alts churning out max run BPCs. Those don't stack so you can only put 1000 in a container, and after a while you need a lot of containers (or just keep them in one big unsorted heap which doesnt improve access speed either).

"we've reached the system cap! Don't pod anyone or they'll be able to bring more pilots in!"
The current system is being exploited. That's why there is so much annoyance. Whoever loads first wins because everyone else is lagged out. Tactics, ships, skills, nothing else matters right now.
Setting a known cap on how many can be in the system is better than the current system. At least you will know how many you can send in and you will get a reasonably functional fight. And yes, I and many others will go into a fight with 4:1 odds against you can have strategic victories out of tactical defeats. It is the unknown variable of who loads the grid first that makes the current situation ridiculous. It is the same problem null sec ran into shortly after Dominion, but with more numbers.

Yeah, polymorphism and late dynamic binding eh?!
I remember once upon a time in the late 90-ies (* ...uh-oh, here he goes again... *) when I was a consultant at the R&D dpt of a large international telecom manufacturer and we where having big troubles with their Java-hamsters. It was really fun chasing those hamsters back into their cage back then, and we got really nice performance out of that mega-distributed-software-hamsters-on-steroids-thingy in the end.
But seriuosly speaking, what you are doing seems so much more fun! Chasing hamsters in a MMORPG beats any telecom system! I mean, how fun is it to call someone on the other side of the planet?! Its much more fun to gank and pod him instead! ;-)
So keep up the good work and enjoy these moments while they last!
...because, as you'll notice in the probably not-to-far future you'll be producing powerpoints, earn-value-, milestone- and other types of graphs while others chase the hamsters and get all the phun (* as happens to often in your career *)

It's a bit of a challenge. Obviously there are things that can be done that would make any system squeal like a pig, but I'm hopeful that we can have the Jita cap high enough that it isn't hit in the normal course of events while maintaining responsiveness.

There's been some banter about staging a 2000-man fleet battle in Jita to let highsec-dwellers know what lag feels like. Would this be a problem?

^this. Let's all make a lo skill frigate alt, appoint a couple CEOs to make new corps and war dec in prep for it. EPIC
CCP Veritas, as a Caldari exclusive missile spammer, I have been following this subject (missiles, hamsters, etc.) since it started. When I saw the note for this follow-up on my log-in screen, I ran in here expecting great things like: "After implementing the recommendations CCP Masterplan put forth, we are pleased to say lag due to missile spammage has been greatly reduced."
Instead I got "After implementing the recommendations CCP Masterplan put forth, we have no idea if it did anything. But at least the servers didn't catch fire again. Hooray! Oh, and btw, Jita is now much improved. Charts/proof."
Let me put this forth. If you take your car to the auto tech because of poor engine performance, you expect that when you go to pick it up, that the tech checked to make sure it's been fixed before giving it back to you.
Just because it doesn't blow up doesn't mean that it is working as intended. In fact, according to CCP Veritas, he has no data at all a to whether or not their changes have made any effect. I find this unacceptable. CCP Masterplan had plenty of data. Why not perform those same tests again and compare the results to the previous results?
Leaving disappointed.
