But CCP's track record for delivering anything that remotely resembles marketing of future material is, well, terrible.

Yea.. it's proberly going to be "execute planetary bombardment" from the science overview.... and a little GIF animation to show if it hit or not.

Edited by: Shepard Book on 30/03/2011 15:53:03 I am happy with the overall vision as vague as it is. Looks like your listening to things we may want.
1)Being able to use dreads for planetary bombardment perhaps? Yes dreads are a joke now.
2)In station combat
There are a few concerns though.
BLACKOPS!?!
1)Nerfing 0.0 anoms
2)buffing highsec by removing quality from agents. I realize a big percentage is care bears but dang.
3)focus on new features for highsec instead of lowsec ( contraband )Do you seriously want low sec to ever grow? I realize incursions maybe have helped a little but that is still universe wide. LOW sec is still there but barren...
4) Is faction warfare the way you want it?
5) taking away insurance from suicide ganking. Do you really want no PvP in highsec except for F.W and wardecs that can be avoided by NPC corps?
What happened to the corruption idea for lowsec?
I like the idea of working on the smaller things but please pay more attention to what we as players voted for through CSM last year and prioritized for you.

Given that some people were whining about removal of shader model 2.0 (an antique in PC terms) recently I suggest you take a chill pill and see what happens in coming weeks/months.
There are many other MMO's out there that do not have such close interaction with their respective communities. I suggest if you don't like what CCP do, then quit. I think the trailers are a vision of what CCP want EvE to be. I'm not looking at the mechanics and the features. I'm looking at the short story. Like a few others I saw, the theme is the same. The Individual matters, there are consequences, honor is important in EvE. That's not really the case. Corp thieves and scammers flourish in EvE. Deception is rewarded and honor is a weakness. The only way to beat people like this is to do what they do only better. CCP don't seem to want that though. They just havent figured out how to change it and not unbalance the game and break it. Concord LP is a start to that I think. While Concord LP doesn't deal with scammers and corp thieves, they do seem to be looking for something. |

It's something really awesome and certainly the one that would make me keep my accounts active because ATM it's horribly boring trying to play the game with lag stuff, broken/not working stuff, waiting hundreds days of skills to do what you want in the game expecting that stuff will not be more broken than it is right now or just doing this exciting activity like ice mining -just like many others-.
Any way, very nice vid, love it. ________________________________________________

What a lol-fest that video is! Apart from the 'shiny-shiny' of walking in stations (bothered) there is no change on the horizon. All this video says to me is 'if you kinda like Eve, why don't you stick around for a few more years and see what we do with it? Here are some guesses we're making!' and apart from that frankly, it's just an ad for Dust 514. Dust 514 is coming, but it's nothing more than a console FPS, and one which won't be BF 3 or Brink and nothing accomplished on that game will reflect in the Eve Universe. Yeah, I know the concept is that you're "hiring mercs to take a base/planet for you", but that's blatantly nonsens. As if some guy is sat in front of his PS3/X-Box waiting for your contract, lol. It'll be 50/50 which side wins, as all these things are and if that's the case, who in their right mind is going to invest anything in the outcome? I suppose with PI being so much fun... As far as I'm aware it's an FPS in the Eve Universe, but all it does is share fluff. The engine for running the 'Walking In Stations' stuff is basically a testbed for CCPs forthcoming 'Vampire: World of Darkness' and I can't see that aspect affecting the running of the game. what means 'isk per hour' anyway...? |

The original EvE trailers only featured in game content. It was one of the many things that made the game especially innovative and differentiated it from others.
Sadly somewhere along the line CCP decided this wasn't enough and started adding oog content. With successive trailers this content has moved further and further away from the way the game actual plays until now they're really just eye candy. I no longer look forward to them and am rarely impressed anymore.
The fact the originals were made purely from actual gameplay not only sold the product but also forced the trailer makers to be artistic and creative within the confines of the actual game. The game effectively sold itself.
Check out Eve Never Fades from 2006 as a good example.

I think you are reading too much into it then, I doubt CCP envisioned EVE as a good versus evil, or honorable versus dishonorable, kind of game. It is more likeable that they imagined EVE to be more Elite-esque where players could be traders, pirates, bounty hunters or explorers. The morality, or the lack of it, is what the players have brought into it and it is what separates EVE from the rest in the MMO genre.
And CCP deserve a medal for not meddling with it.

I am not disagreeing with you, but I am not agreeing with you either because the older trailers didn't really show anything innovative and different either when you can categorize them into trailers about stuff added to the game, story telling & lore and technology. But I agree with you that the newer trailers are more about reeling you in than show off EVE in its glory.
EVE Never Fades is a special case, personally I find it more to be along the lines of being a piece of art using EVE as its locomotion.

I have used my 4 hour plex allowance to come post this on here because I felt so strongly about it. I have not played in 6 months. I played for years. And I have to say this trailer is lovely. But here are a few things I would rather see:
1.Removal of Pos Shields you can run into every time some one with a big stick comes by. 2.Removal of off-line pos after 30day or some mechanic to address offline pos. 3. afk empire living in npc stations. 4. Travel (jump bridges over used. warp bubbles over powered preventing normal travel.)
And I will point out to every one. This Trailer's Vision shares something profound with CCP's April fools joke about mounts. Both are as plausible and frankly at this point the outsider would say that mounts are more Fin likely than in station pvp. Planetary bombardment from EVE onto Dust players and or Either of these ideas happening before 2015.
I use to love this game. But frankly issues get ignored for years and the Eve veteran community gets more and more bitter as time goes on. I Find less and less ex-players who have positive things to say. And that's sad. And you may think who cares. Well that is the point. All the people who have quit have no voice. So for every supporter active you could have 10 people who have left. And this is the problem with every mmo. When they start to die they make changes their active players put forward. Not Goto the people who have left and ask how they can get them back.

Originally by: Fat Freddy Remember folks, this is a "vision of the future".
I went to Fanfest in 2008, it was really good and I would love to go again sometime. While there CCP showed a video of their "vision of the future" it showed the captains quarters, and the inside of the station, with the idea that you could rent shop and office space. This was 3 years ago! and we are still waiting, there were quite a few "visions" shown that weekend, and most of them found their way into game in some form or another.
Epic mission arcs was the one I remember best (being a carebear) they were introducing not only a new set of missions, but a framework that would allow mission creation to be really easy and much better than the current system, it would allow endless variation... in the end we got 4 missions out of that and nothing more.
I only cite this example to throw this awesome video into perspective.
TL;DR
Take with a pinch of salt
Fred
Hopefully this current vision will be accurate and timely.

What sec level does one imagine that video representing?
Are there any qualitative differences in the visions of where highsec/lowsec/nullsec are going, or like rats, is the concept to have all sectors of space be awash with mercs, just at different scales of numbers and armaments?

The video was cool and all but i hate when developers release CGI trailers that do not represent their game.
The trailer suggests:
1. Dust will be a 3rd person shooter 2. There will be voice communication between eve and dust player 3. There will be combat in stations 4. Eve players will be able to double cross dust players
If all the above were true the game would be amazing but from what IÆm hearing, we will be lucky to get combat in stations.

Because, CCP obviously can't handle a project that any junior high kid with half a brain can and get a new set of forums working, even after MULTIPLE live tests? Planetary bombardment could very easily be made to happen, and fit in well with the way FPS games already play online.
How many times have you played a character that calls an airstrike? This was one of the useful weapons for any team in, for example, Frontlines where a specialist would call in an airstrike, which was limited in number and frequency of use.
If airstrike calls from the ground give pilot in space targeting information (without which the pilot cant shoot), then not only do the groundforces WANT it to happen, but if there HAS to be a real ship up in space to perform the strike then the Dusties will WANT eve players to be involved to perform that service for them. Defending the space above a planet "achieving space superiority" could become a key ingredient in the success of Dust integration imo, and make the Eve side more involved in the battle too. You wanna hurt alliance A? Go pew their ships and planets, hirting mercs for the gruntwork.
Will be intersting to see if this model could have a positive effect on soverignty perhaps? |
