Will an actual collision detection scheme ever be implemented in EVE?

You need to read up on warp theory.

That's just BS for (we cant fix it) by CCP.
What next?
"Lag" is actually a natural spacial anomaly and is to be expected?

i cant wait for the rage when a newb blows up cause he warped thru a celestial....or cause he got killed cause he couldnt warp cause Aura said "Can't let you do that, there is stuffz thar"
or how bout when Destiny rips EVE inside out trying to calculate the forces involved from hitting a planet liek that and we'll get interstellar pinball

1) this is a total non-issue.
2) SOOOO many more important things to work on.

I, for one, would quite welcome a dynamic parabolic warp route that used gravitational phenomena (i.e. planetse and stars) properly.
But yes, it's not really that important...

IMMERSION is important. Hard to get into it when you are flying through planets, ships and stations. Talk about sub-par programming, and all you EVE/CCP apologist just keep enabling it. Guess you love the crappy coding.

:/ Not for nothing, but you kind of post a great deal in the forums for a game I thought you stated you were leaving.

its not crappy coding... obviously it works or we wouldn't have ppl whining about being killed from being hung up on a acc gate or a asteroid... the collision system is purposely turned off to allow warping cause in the few cases where you DO warp thru things it would totally ruin ur day (depending on what the response to a warp thru a celestial might entail)
if you want immersion then wait for Incarna, that and i MUCH rather support CCP moving the planets and stations along their orbits just a bit so that these cases dont happen in the first place, but i still agree that amoungst other things that are "wrong" with the game, this is the least of our issues

According to modern theoretical physics, it is entirely possible for the different universes to by governed by different laws of physics. This would explain the EVE universe.
This is why the ether of space appears to be a liquid and our ships movement is similar to that of a submarine here on Earth. And for reasons unexplainable by me, it allows our warp bubble to pass through solid objects.

Warp bubble takes you "out of phase" with the rest of space. Think of it as opening a tunnel through a hillside and then closing it behind you. Hence you pass "through" objects.
It's this advanced technology that makes any serious space travel possible. Without it you'd have to constantly dog-leg around planets, moons, stations, asteroids, etc. If there was and decent sized piece of space junk in the way of your warp (like a ship for instance), you'd be dead.
So without the ability to create a "warp bubble" you'd just have to slow-boat everywhere under "impluse drive" power.
If you want to ***** about "merging" with other ships when undocking from a station... well fair enough I'm sure. Except however it'd make it impossible for more than one ship to undock at a time (due to constant bumpage), and you'd have to wait for the previous ship to clear the undock area before the station let you out. Possibly stations could have multiple udock points (which would make sense), but even then you'd be queuing to leave in any system with a high number of pilots and only a few stations (Jita 4-4 anyone?).
Not to mention the drama of aggression/insta-warps/station camping/etc. It'd change the whole game. There'd have to be a "towed away from the undock" thing like you get when you're docking or else people would just sit there and grief it up.
Gameplay practicality > immersion? I think so. |

Heh, for those of you saying it's "realistic" to warp through a station or planet: 'splosions don't happen in space in real life either.
I for one would like them to implement a bezier warp system, so a route is plotted from point A to point B, which navigates around under and over the large obstacles. Need to warp somewhere that's directly behind a station or planet? Instead of aligning directly through the station, it plots a path around the station's sphere via the closest direction based on your current location. It would be a rather simple calculation I would think. This way it will be a really cool effect while you're in warp, gliding around and through the celestial objects in a system.
I'd also like to see a gravitational system put into place. The ability to slingshot around a planet would be cool, especially in a speed-frigate! Think of the battle tactics that would open up!

iirc there was a dev that said that it was indeed possible for them to do this, but with the number of warps per second in the game with the server having to calculate each, it would a) add uneeded load b) take you longer to get into warp so they didnt do it.
what i would like to see is some kind of visual effect that just masks the mingy looking bit where you fly thro the geometry of planets and stations and it looks ****. ============================ 2003 and still alive! |

Well some clever liniear math can solve the warp though planets and stations or any other major object to lead to some cool tranisitions.
However collision damage and the sort is a bad idea, a rock the size of a dime will ruin your day. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 26FEB11

+1 Now you're talking. That would improve things alot.
An opaque warp tunnel of sorts.

In one episode of "Stargate" they warped an asteroid directly through the earth. So its already been established in the SiFi arena that warp drive can go "through" things. No need for CCP to change the game.

Edited by: Corina''s Bodyguard on 30/03/2011 22:46:41 The force has not been established in EVE, whereas warp drive has, and the technical mentionings of warp drive in EVE is consistent with general sci-fi warp drive.
Therefore, it is foolish to consider the outside aspects of the force, while quite reasonable to consider outside aspects of warp drive.
Anyway, until CCP makes a statement otherwise, the fact that we can warp through things in game means we can warp through things IU.

Its been established as mechanic that can be used, not a mechanic that must be used. For example in Star Trek (the series, not the game) they do not warp through planets. When you make a new SiFi world, take what you want, make up the rest, try to be internally consistent. Given the history of mechanics used in SiFi, saying that EVE's version of warp can go through planets is acceptable.

Exactly.
So I'm wondering if CCP will just fall back on "that's the way it is" (plenty of enabling apologists here to stroke CCP) or actually admit it's half-assed and do something about it some day.

at fan fest and in the weeks before fan fest this thread has been highlighted as having received attention from ccp and action has resulted from it.
It is basically a huge polish list. If you sincerely wish the game to improve, and this is not some smear campaign, then i suggest you throw some ideas there. Soundwave and his team seem to have acknowledged that the game needs polish.
