My sources inform me that 5 people at CCP have been laid off. Hopefully EVE gets more time to grow, it could really become something awesome. -- Champion of user friendlieness and proper information distribution Defender of newbies EVE knowledgeBase |

This is a rumour at the moment, so please don't go on bursts of wild speculation.
Any announcement of such an action will come from CCP, and until then is unsubstantiated. Not saying it hasn't happened, I don't know myself, but CCP would provide such information to you if they felt you needed to know. --

With all due respect, this is not a matter of IF we need to know. The player base NEEDS to know if the company is in financial difficulty as we are investing a hell of a lot of time in the game. Would be nice to know it isn't going to get sucked into an economic black hole.

LOL to funny ccp will let us know if we need to be told. I am sure they will do every thing to not let that info get out to the the community it would devaste the game. But it wouldn't suprise me that they did. Any one else notice that last weeks peak was lower than the weeks before. Up until last week they had been adding, last week was first sign of contraction to the player base. Who knows if this is a start of a trend or not we will see. I suspect if we get a couple more weeks of contracting numbers you will see the ability to track them removed. |

all the nerfing and not fixing obvious and annoying bugs quickly isnt helping.
im thinking of joining them and finding something else to play. this game isnt what it should be 2 months into release.

Losing staff in games like this can mean that the game will survive. Jumpgate's EU server is run by a dedicated band of volunteers and just 2 paid staff. By keeping the paid staff down the overheads are kept down and the game can survive. Therefore don't see this rumour, if true, as a reason to worry the game may fail. As long as CCP remain commited to EvE then it will survive. The only things you may see are a higher percentage of volunteer admin staff and/or slightly slower update times.

The lack of advertising, or any kind of promotion is really not helping. I had to dig in my local Game Stop to find the game.

This is normal in the evolution of an online game. WWIIOL also cut back after its initial release.

Tristan hits the "Nail on the Head" - too many NURFs not enough fixes to stupid bugs. It makes no difference to me at this point if CCP looses All thier staff. I can't get my RL friends to play with me..... There are games out there that they prefer - And they don't find this one to be at all enjoyable in it's present state.

And the point is?
At the end of the day, Most of the Hard work has been done, therefore even if CCP has laid off some staff, then this only makes economical sense. Why keep people in PAID Jobs, if there is less work to do, which can be done by less people.
I have run my own company, and I was more than happy to dump staff when we had no need for them. Then when we did need staff, we would just go and recruit new people.
I guarantee you won't see any Posts on these forums when CCP hires 5 new Staff.

It would make sense if they laid off some artists. I don't think they start their next mmo-project right now. So they don't need big numbers of artist for 3d models/textures rigtht now. so why pay them?

You honestly think they would tell you they were in trouble financially? Yeah right, so what? You can jump ship before it sinks? No, thats not how it works.

Gaming companies are volitile work places. Hiring, laying off, freezes are all highly commonplace.
Most are run by people who have little to no real common sense in these things. No offence to CCP. I have worked for three game companies, they all run pretty much the same.
Boss 1: "OMG we aren't making how much we thought!" Boss 2: "We could stop spending so much money on stupid stuff or stop giving ourselves massive bonuses all the time." Boss 1: "NO!! Lay off the underlings! 20 of them equals my salary. That will even it out. Now we can fly business class to E3 and drink $200 bottles of wine on the way!"
That's how gaming companies work for the most part. Short term live;, get all the money you can as quick as you can. Once you are big enough, sell for a few millions. Retire to Fiji or do it all over again.
Not all of them, but most of them.

I wouldn't freak out too much over rumors of lay-offs at CCP. At most companies 10% of the people do 90% of the work anyway.
Besides, as we've seen in the "behind the scenes" video, too many of 'em spend all their time playing fussball anyway. And while I'm on the subject, what's up with that "Edward Keyboard-Hands" guy?

Its sad if its true, but I think that your right about the peak numbers. It seems that less people are playing now. Its ridiculous nerfing everything in sight and leaving bugs like the local chat problem for months. I hope im not right when I say that I genuinely cant see many people playing this in a few months time unless something drastic happens.

Here are the problems:
1. Customer service 2. Consistent bugs that hamper game play 3. Lag from the server (lag events happen at the same time - even to our corp's players in europe) 4. Too harsh and boring for the noobie getting their feet wet 5. Rediculous travel times - who the hell wants to spend 1-2 hours travelling each day at times
80K-150K per month is not a lot of cash flow to cover the cost of a mmporg.
I really like this game and don't want to see it go away. Customer service I believe killed a lot of their subscriptions more then any other factor. Second is content/down time in game imo.

As some one already said. There are some dev folks who you just dont need once the project is launched. If it took two guy to design something it may only take one to maintain and add to it.
ALSO, scarey but true: EVE has probibly already made an ok profit. Yes there are big server fees that must be paid. But if they get 30-50k people to buy the game and play 12 months then they can really shut it all down and have plenty o cash. Money wise, every 4-5 months is roughly equal to buying the game again. So in a year you have effectively bought a game from CCP 3 or 4 times. 40k users * 3 = 120k How many other games sell 120k units in a year?

i would assume that they have about 25,000 players, considering that at peak there are about 5,000 people playing..
Can you guys just really shutup about this? My god.... should have been locked a long time ago.
WW2OL layed off half of it's staff, and in doing so, look where they are now. A sucessful and fun game, with a community 1000 times better than the whinefest here. Either post something constructive, or at least funny, or just STFU. ______________________

EVE still needs a lot of work and fixing, it is actually surprising it hasn't already been done at this stage, it suggest the team is too small. Also this game has a lot of potential, and most of what it can offer is still to be developped, and I'm thinking of pure content, not just expensions.
None of this will be achieved by a smaller staff.

Well you have to remember that the certain other game that got released last week is doing EXEPTIONALY well, it has several severs (a bad point in my books) but some of them have more than the entire eve player base on them. But then again this was to be expected cos the other brand has had years of exposure and has been ranted and raved about in mag and net sites for a long time. Eve on the other hand is one of those unknown gems. The majority of games didnt know it existed untill the big game mags finally got around to reviewing it, and even then one review in a few mags isnt going to raise awareness of eve all that much. Main: The travel times are a problem, I keep repeating my self here. But the EVE universe should be big, and I agree with you it's probably not big enough.
I just don't want to travel so much when I'm playing, for me this totally killed EVE.
Now I don't play EVE anymore, I will just use up the last days of my subscription to whine my ass of in the forums. ;-)
