...assuming people here watch sci-fi tv shows ;)
Just 3! otherwise tl;dr :P
For me:
1. Babylon 5 2. BSG (new) 3. Firefly
B5 was just epic! I usually cycle through the series on dvd once a year... apart from the last season. The shadow war was the best part. I want's a B5 hardcore sandbox mmo, but no one listens to Zathras. |

Just 3? Here, have six:
Babylon 5: This show sets the standard for how to execute a planned story arc. Comments in season 1 allude to events that don't occur until season 4. The universe is rich, the cultures are familiar yet alien, and the combat scenes are something to behold, even today. Easily my favorite show.
Firefly: If you're into sci-fi and you don't know why this is on the list, you're doing it wrong.
Farscape: I'm about to finish watching this for the third time, and it's brilliant.
Doctor Who: Bowties are cool. RUN!!!
Stargate: SG-1 is my favorite, but I liked them all.
Space: Above and Beyond: an early victim of Fox's campaign against scifi that also killed Firefly, this was a great show that didn't get a chance to succeed.
Popular sci-fi that I don't care for:
Battlestar Galactica: This show has some of the best moments in sci-fi, but they are the peaks between vast valleys of bore. The show becomes far too mired in social commentary and being a soap opera for the main characters.
Star Trek: I find the technology and the universe of ST to be absurd. Every time I watch Trek for any length of time I end up wondering what the hell is wrong with humans of the future that they lack the imagination to push their technology to its logical limits.
Lexx: This is the one sci-fi series I started and never finished. I just found it to be that bad. The Skunkworks is recruiting. -áhttps://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1540711#post1540711 |

Farscape. Dr. Who. Err....... Stargate SG-1. Firefly was great but was really just a western in space. BSG was great but there's no point in watching it again due to spoilers. Bablyon V was great, but I don't miss it for some reason. Stargate SG-1 is inferior to all of the these shows, but it qualifies as the TV equivalent of 'comfort food'. =/

I agree! I always thought it was Steven Fry who ruined the movie by turning it into a 'luvvy-fest'
But after going to the 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show LIVE" the other day which starts with snatches of interviews with Douglas Adams.
Quote: Douglas 'The Screenplay version will be a lot, lot different. Um! & also utterly & completely contradictory to what's gone before, which is a very important thing to do' Interviewer 'Which should annoy the Fans' Douglas 'Well, that's an important thing to do as well'
So it was always Douglas' intention to 'Pass water' off the fans with the movie! Sneaky and it worked

Obvious first:
Babylon 5 (minus the unnecessary 5th season).
This is what a TV SF series should be. It's so ahead of the genre that there is no point to compare.
Sensible second:
Stargate SG-1. Although it went off track in the last seasons, was quite fun and the characters were quite enjoyaable. My favorite would be the episode when they tried to close a gate open to a black hole as the effects of it permeated into the base.
More or less random third:
Star Trek TNG
Was fun, lasted long and had great characters. I remember specially the episode going on inside the holodeck with a Western theme -tha't what SF is about, the ability to tell ANY story and yet it be SF by following certain rules. I play games for fun, evasion and reward.-áEVE is not fun, it sucks as much as reality and dismisses all my ways of playing it.
I think that I should unhook myself from that b*tch... Soon. |

I guess
1) BSG 2004 (been watching it over the last year, just started season 4, so epic) 2) Star Trek TNG (last three seasons plus the borg/Q episodes) 3) Firefly or Falling Skies. Firefly was great but v shortlived, falling skies is decent, but a little cliched, it has some cool sci-fi concepts though and a perfect setting, so if the cast/crew 'find their groove' for the third season it could become something great.
Other goodies: Dollhouse is actually quite good in it's entirety. It would have gotten in my top 3 if my top 3 wasn't so long winded already. This show sorta starts out mediocre but rapidly improves towards the end of season 1 and start of season 2 to become a bundle of epic sci-fi goodness. This is another Whedon idea like firefly that got the chop from the network, but luckily they had an extra season and a little more notice, so the show doesn't feel clipped like firefly or SG:U does.
SG:U. I enjoyed this, just wish they had got to do more with it really. Also I found the whole plotline towards the end of the show to be just :wtf:
Red Dwarf: duh
Cowboy Bebop: shuddup it counts
Doctor Who: I could never truly consider this a great sci-fi show, I dunno why, I guess I thought it was just too light. However I gotta say that series 4 and onwards have been awesome, (the opener for season seven was great :D) and I'd probably rate it quite highly these days.
The Walking Dead: Zombies are science! If you care to refute that, a portion of the show involved a scientist using a computer so that's sci-fi right there. There should be a rather awesome pic here |

Just to ring in on a couple comments. X-Files is drama, sci-fi, horror, mystery, thriller according to wikipedia etc which I believe is correct in this instance.
Ehhhhh.... Titanic is NOT steampunk lol, but it is Victorian which is one element for steampunk. The other element is alternate history brought on by the first computer developed in 1822, where it had been taken seriously and widely used leading to great scientific discoveries etc.. As an aristocrat of the independent state of Caledon, I take my steampunk RP seriously But I know you were being tongue in cheek about it.
Night of the living dead is horror.
Think I missed reading a few posts tl;dr lists. Comments are good though :D

Ah well, I thought it was good for another season. Most of the first season was character building, though a few characters were just flat out stupid. Hey but they killed off characters in that show so there was yet still hope.
Of course Firefly was the true tragedy when it comes to cancellations. Gotta luv those 6 shooters in space :D |

I watched some BSG, I'm really not sure if it was the old or new one, but I could never get through the first episode of the first season. it just didn't have the hook I needed.

The BSG w/o disco, well was a bit campy early on. It gets dark and gritty further into the seasons. BSG:Disco was campy all the way through, but my fav sci-fi show as a kid, next to ST:O and Space 1999.1 |

I don't think it was, they might have claimed some of it was, but then again Hollywood is notorious for labeling just about anything a true story.
The show had aliens, alien viruses, alien parasites, spaceships, ghosts, alien ghosts, sociopathic clone children, cults, shapeshifters, tibetan elemental monsters, zombies, monstrous fungal creatures. Occasionally there were episodes very much lodged in reality like the Jersey Devil episode where the monster turns out to be feral people living in the woods but for the most part it was crazy **** all the time. The show tapped into so many genres of sci-fi outside of the regular space opera stuff that it really had something for everyone. Probably why it lasted 9 seasons. |

When i started out in Technology we had DR WHO and i hid many times behind my sofa asking my sister what was happening, i can tell you.
and a little show called Star Trek had me hooked (Ohura - mainly)
Then came Space 1999 and the non bastardised Battlestar Galactica
In the movies i watched Star Wars - THE ORIGINAL 4th EPISODE YOU YOUNG HOODIES WOULDNT UNDERSTAND.
I found later that i enjoyed The Black Hole
Then i believe i took the full force of the puppets of DOOM Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet - oh i dooooo love the Mysterons, and Joe 90 There was also the Terrahawks, Mysterious Cities of Gold and lots of cartoony puppetry amore.
Then it went all...... blurry.

It's strange actually.
Some people believe that the Victorian Era ended in 1912 not 1901 with the death of Queen Victoria.
However the Edwardian era runs from 1901 - 1910 and the death of King Edward VII (or to some people 1919 and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles) so if you believe that the Victorian era ended in 1912 then you also have to believe that the Edwardian Era never happened.
There is a lot of different ways of looking at it to be honest. I will always say that the Victorian Era ended in 1901

I said Victorian Era Style. The Victorian Era ended in 1901. I don't know of anyone that claims that the Victorian Era ended in 1912. The style of the Victorian era is more critical to steampunk than the reign of Queen Victoria was. 1. the invention of the western computer. 2. Victorian era style; clothing, architecture etc. 3. etc etc. I think that if you want to debate that than you should start another thread.

All thanks to J. Michael Straczynski and his "contribution" ;) But at least B5 was still produced, and probably a better show than if Paramount had picked them up rather than just taking their series bible.
If you liked DS9 yet haven't watched B5 through, I'd highly recommend it, it's brilliant imo. I guess that's what happens when you go with one writer mostly. |

Quote:Stargate SG-1. Although it went off track in the last seasons, was quite fun and the characters were quite enjoyaable. My favorite would be the episode when they tried to close a gate open to a black hole as the effects of it permeated into the base.
I often cite that episode as one of the greatest episodes of "pure sci-fi" ever created of any show. It's just one of those rare instances where the writers delivered a truly great idea really well.
My top 3:
1). BSG (new) - anyone who argues that the old BSG is better than the new one needs a beating just short of death 2). The X-Files - critics often refer to the 3rd season of this show as the 'greatest season of television ever'; and they just aren't wrong... It fell apart in the final season, but the 8th season is also one of its best. Obviously, the chemistry of the two leads played a big part 3). Babylon 5 - not much I can say that hasn't been said already, but this is proper sci-fi. Great premise, amazing characters, and great writing. My biggest complaint about the show, and the reason it's not #1 in my list, is that the bulk of the first season is so atrociously bad. The dialogue was ridiculous and some of the acting was terrible. If you survive till the end of season 1, you're in for a treat for the rest of the ride (I even mostly like the 5th season). This show has one of the worst first seasons of any show ever.
Honorable mentions:
DS9 - Alot of Babylon 5 geeks rail against DS9 for being a copycat, and they kinda did rip off B5...but honestly - DS9 did it very well with a larger budget and in a universe that most sci-fi geeks adore. So they can be forgiven.
Firefly - duh
Fringe - because once 2nd season starts and the whole "parallel universe" arc begins, it's just too damn cool to ignore.
Invasion (2004) - awesome Invasion of the Body Snatchers scenario set post-hurricane in the Florida everglades. And it has William Fichtner in it, and he rules.
I also liked Manny Coto's "Odyssey 5" that was on Showtime for 1 season then cancelled. Very cool concept and it had Peter Weller with a foul-mouthed southern accent. |

Dautrin Maize wrote: the bulk of the first season is so atrociously bad. The dialogue was ridiculous and some of the acting was terrible. If you survive till the end of season 1, you're in for a treat for the rest of the ride (I even mostly like the 5th season). This show has one of the worst first seasons of any show ever. I can think of worse series starts. But S1 still had highlights such as Babylon Squared. That episode would need to remain in the series somewhere, it's an important episode. Really, I liked S1 far better than S6. Main problem with S1 was just that they were so under funded. This started off as a wing and a prayer venture, and it should have had better funding for what it was.

Well, if we can throw in anime syfy. 1 Outlaw Star (hands down the best syfy anime ever.) 2 Trigun 3 Lensman 4 8th Man After (OVA series) Notice how Cowboy Bebop isn't on this list. It's okay but it's not worth my top list of any sort.
