Any :bittervets: or other out there remember the Amiga computers?
A500, A500+, A600, A1000, A1200 (first amiga with a HDD), A2000, A3000 and the A4000?
What were your favourite games for it? I think mine was Indy Heat and Wings :D

Edited by: Copine Callmeknau on 12/04/2011 05:23:07 yehhhh, I had both an Amiga 500+ w/ HDD, and an amiga 4000 when I was growing up. **** I didn't even get a PC until year 2000 cause these beasts were so good.
Ummm I played K240, coala, settlers, beneath a steel sky, millenium 2.2, whales voyage 1&2, banshee, lots of desert strike, pinball illusions , pinball dreams, lots of arkanoid, mortal kombat 2, simon the sorcerer, scorched earth. There were some other stuff I loved but can't remember the name any more
K240 and desert strike were def my favs though. They're good enough that I occasionally boot up my amiga emulator and play them on PC heh.
I miss the days of a 200 page game manual with backstory etc, and the copy-protection of 'Please enter word 14, line 7, page 128'
I bet I'm the youngest person that replies in this thread btw, I'm 21 and been using amiga's since I was about 4

I had an A500 with the extra 512k ram, then got an A1200.
Banshee was so awesome, one of my favourites too. Desert and Jungle Strike were great, i loved it how you could get extra ammo with a sky hook lol
Beneath a Steel Sky is a game i play now and then, as is Flight of the Amazon Queen

yehhh that 500 was the exact same one I had. Did yours have the little red switch in front of the floppy drive so you could enable or disable the memory upgrade? I remember my old man paid like $800 for that extra 512kb. God knows what the humongous 12mb HDD cost, that thing was just ridiculous
haha, yeh desert strike was so cool. Trying to rescue civilians with that damn rope ladder while you were low on fuel was some hectic ****
BaSS is almost too epic for words. That blew my mind when I first played it. If you haven't played K240 that's worth picking up, it's like a primitive RTS, lots of replayability in that one as you can make a lot of different choices and play a lot of different ways. I think I have a floppy image of it somewhere. Haven't played that Amazon Queen game :o
Just remembered another game I played all the time, Lotus Challenge
I wish they'd remake some of those old games with new epic graphics ya know :p

FOTAQ was an Australian puzzle/adventure game, basically you are a low brow pilot in the 1940's, and you have to fly an actress over the amazon, but crash... after that it is about getting out of the amazon alive. Very funny, and pretty entertaining all round.
And yep, had the same switch to turn the extra ram on and off lol
Lotus 1, 2 and 3... man they were awesome

Syndicate, Populous, Pinball Fantasies, Eye of the Beholder, Knights of the Sky... many, many others.
Still have an emulator, various kickstart ROM's and untold games for the Amiga.
Was a fantastic machine in the day and I still play a lot of the old games. Too much style over substance in many games today.

Edited by: defiler on 12/04/2011 14:31:26 A500 owner here. No HDD or such fancy stuff, just an extra floppy drive and the memory expansion (no switch on mine), for which I still occasionally change the battery to make sure it keeps time properly. Still remember the joys of having to unplug DF1 as it ate up tiny bit of RAM, rendering a few games unplayable.
Favourite games? Where to begin... Frontier, Syndicate, Settlers, Moonstone, Wings, Cannon Fodder, Pinball Fantasies, Street Rod, Chaos Engine, ...um, I'll stop now.
Still play some of those games on a beefed up machine in WinUAE these days, makes me wish I had had a more powerful Amiga back in the day (the FPS in Frontier isn't too good on a real 500). Oh, and Worms Directors Cut? Best Worms game ever.

Bought an Atari to make music on and it blew up second time i turned it on - warrantied, out of stock, sod it ill have an A1200 instead - best disaster ever to befall me, best decision i made to turn companies.
Sensible software - all of it, desert strike/jungle strike, banshee epic epic epic Frontier...... Octamed, Blitz Basic, 68k Assembler, Imagine 3.x
Got a 50Mhz accelerator and 8meg RAM for Imagine alone - Hard drive... the works in the end.
It did it all, as a computer should. But.... we are better off now than we ever were then

Oh, and special mention to Shadow of the Beast. Gameplay may have been kinda meh, but the outstanding music, presentation, designs, backgrounds and graphics engaged me in a special mood that modern games fail to, in all their glitz and over-inflated budgets.

Wings, Settlers, Pirates!, every single Dizzy game ever made, Lotus Turbo Challenge (preferred the 3rd one), Stunt Car Racer, Rick Dangerous.
I would sell my soul to play Wings again, lol

Parents got me a A600 in 1993. At the time my favorite games were Populous, Syndicate, Hired Guns and Turrican. Got a A1200 last year. Pimped it with a 50mhz accelerator card with 8MB. One of the 'Classic WB' pre packaged Workbench's on a 4GB CF and added AMITCP through a 3com 589D PCMCIA network card. Though there is not much of practical value you can do with an Amiga on the internet. The standard A1200 PSU is actually worse than the A500 one! So I modded a PC PSU that has plenty of juice. The funniest thing about getting the A1200 is that it does not support VGA just RGB through SCART. So I got a hulking 24" CRT TV for ú25 from a charity shop.

Had A1200 with all the bells and whistles, a 4x CD-rom player, 500mb HD, 68060 chip-card with 16mb of RAM, SCSI-BUS, the works.
I sold it later to get my first PC, a decision that I now later have come to regret but then again I shouldn't had sold my c64 for the Amiga either.

<3 Amigas, my first was an A600 which got replaced by a A1200 and then I ultimately had a CD32 although there wasn't many games for that but Wing commander on it was awesome.
My favourite games where things like Gunship 2000 which featured all different kinds of attack helicopters even some experimental ones and games like Space Hulk and Syndicate where also the kind of games I liked.
Out of curiosity can anybody recommend a decent Amiga emulator for Windows so I could play some old Amiga games out of nostalgia?

I purchased Amiga Forever, it was about $50 and came with a few games. Several years ago i downloaded the 21,000 amiga roms torrent that was floating around, but have not had the time to delve into them. Amiga Forever is a pretty damn good emulator.
I remember a game called Ports of Call, was a shipping company simulator, was awesome :)

I don't think I had to do anything to get it to work for me when I migrated to 7. If you kept your old WinUAE folder it's probably something simple like an invalid path or different video/audio hardware in your configs.

Oh the days of INSERT DISK 13

ROFL Yeh, I used to spam ridiculous amounts of scatter missiles, like 20-40 or so, then follow it with a nuke or a small blob of those orange hellfire ones 10-15 sec later. Really messed stuff up, scatters were great at weakening every structure on the roid so that nukes/hellfires would instapop everything left.
Then of course I had the 'bbq' and 'taser' model of fleet BS, they were filled to the brim with those chaos bombs and vortex generator respectively. They were heaps of fun to drop on unprotected roids

Monkey Island 1+2 (I'm Guybrush Threepwood... MIGHT PIRATE!) Civilization (our words are backed up with NUCLEAR WEAPONS!!!) I don't have a guide for it either, I pretty much had to figure it out the hard way, but in essense it's no different to m2.2 which yeah I know it's awesome but the combat was so poor... yuck.
It's also a story follow on. So you start off on the moon, and the earth is messed up. Basically start digging, get materials advance tech, **** off the martians by sending out probes, prepare for unending war. You don't want me to give too much away, but one thing is important, sucking is important. Some of the more important tech in the game won't get invented until the game decides you don't need it. If you can keep up the ridiculous production levels later on to maintain enough [spoiler alerts] to keep the martians at bay and continue to slowly expand your empire, they will never invent the [spoiler alert] that makes martian repelling somewhat less time consuming. Also, you have to find pieces of the [spoiler] which are scattered all over. Otherwise the game will never end.

aha, thanks for that. I think I was doing something wrong the first time I played it, I got out to jupiter and found some piece of..... whatever that thing is. Didn't encounter any martians though, got frustrated after a couple hours, haven't played it since.
I shall give it another go I think, it definately looked like an improvement over m2.2 as far as content etc goes.

Manual flying in Frontier, if you can achieve it, you're the first person ever.
The maths behind intercepting a ship in space with a view to fighting it is pretty much beyond the scope of the human brain, also it'll take you a whole evening to even get close to them, only to find that you whistle past them at a relative speed of maybe KKERRRRPOW! kilometres per second and your whole evening just got wasted.
Auto pilot, time speed up. It's the only way to be sure.

Keep building orbital stations. The martians will get all Non-Proliferation Treaty on your ass when they consider you're a threat. And don't worry too much about finding all the pieces of that thing just yet, it will be a hella long time before you will even be able to find all the pieces or need them.

Edited by: Ibn Taymiyyah on 14/04/2011 15:21:10 So I had a A600 with extra mem (came with 1mb factory and I put in the extra 1mb) plus the external drive for 2 disk games! Later on got a A1200 with PPC upgrade and a HD... the thing was epic!
Had some 400 games for the A600...
Settlers (played this one for about 40h straight when it came out!) K240 (EPIC game that I still play on emulators along with it's PC cover (fragile alleagence)) UFO - Enemy Unknown (... no words needed! ...) Laser Squad Turrican series Cannon Fodder series Another World & Flashback Syndicate Worms Secret of Monkey Island Beneath a steel sky Pinball Dreams / Fantasies Moonstone Speedball Dune / Dune II Stunt Car Racer The Chaos Engine Superfrog North & South (this one was so much fun with all the mini-games) Civilization / Colonization Pirates
I guess I'll have to load up that emulator when I get home now
EDIT:
Forgot frontier and the alien breed series! Both epic! :D

*humps leg* Hell yeh, k240 was THE SHIZ!
Yeh, played fragile alliagence a lot as well, not a bad remake to be honest. I really really want a 2011 spec version of K240, with epic space battles and missiles etc :D:D:D
I still remember *beeboobeeboobeeboobeeboobeeboo* *BANG* Followed by horrible green muck crawling over your precious fleet construction asteroid. dissolving all your buildings as it goes. So much fun
fragile allegiance was amazing. I still play it. have the pc iso (works fine in dosbox) if anyone wants to you know, compare notes.

Something's been borked with my version of fragile allegiance for a while now, some of the building animations have been corrupted somewhere along the way, so now the game usually CTD's while trying to setup my roid :( Trying to work on a fix atm, I gotta find some way of disabling animations. Hell if I can't figure it out I'll just go find a new version to download.
As far as strategy goes, I used to do a lot of zerging. Heaps of assault ships with static inducers accompanied by dual plasma cannon combat eagles. Really really powerful combo heh, but they can die pretty easy if they come up against too much anti-ship defense. Usually I send those guys in, and then pull them off the planet before landing my chaos bomb/vortex fleet. Combat eagles ftw, cheap gank owns

North and South was so awesome... getting more armies, choosing your side, going after the train lines, taking over enemy bases and trains, fighting each other on the battlefield with cannons, horses and troops.... everything about that game was funny

OMG, soo many memories in this thread!
I had the A500 first with the 512k upgrade, and the hard drive that plugged into the Zorro slot on the side. Traded those in for the A1200 with the 68030 + FPU and 8mb RAM.. eventually ended up with the A4000. How I wish I'd never sold those!
Games I used to love though were the Mercenary series, Frontier, It Came from the Desert 1&2, Rocket Ranger, Shadow of the Beast, Dungeon Master, Lemmings, Syndicate, Whales Voyage 1&2, Millenium 2.2 and Deuteros, Monkey Island.. oh god the list is endless!
Oh and who can forget Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders? I LOVED that one :)
I also had the 3D Construction Kit and I used to spend literally DAYS creating games on it.. I had some crackers on there but they're now relegated to that big recycle bin in the sky..

Yesss, I used to do the exact same thing :D Really liked the backstory for the aliens, and all the ship details/schematics etc. Also the strange little messages from Sci-Tek scattered throughout the manual, sorta reminds me of Fallout in that regard.
