Edited by: Vogue on 17/04/2011 00:26:48 The cold war was a bum deal for a lot of countries that were stuck in-between the USSR and the USA. Vietnam war created great controversy in the USA. Mostly from young people who wanted to evade service. This reminds me of a film Charlton Heston was in. The scene was he was watching a hippy pop festival. Some hippy said 'we should all get along, love and respect each other'. Charlton Heston said said that line in unison with ire when gripping a gun. As a lot of Vietnam soliders got a lot of disrespect.
Its easy to talk soldiers. Though my mental health history would exclude me in current times I would enlist If there was a great need for it. I suppose I would feel a sense of duty and pride at enlistment. But given my over analytic mind I would be crapping my pants and vomiting during deployment. How I would react beyond the initial pangs of fight or flight I don't know. A very ugly nasty business. In 'The World At War (WW2)' an ex soldier said he felt a total sense of dislocation going back to civilian life. He was distant to his family and friends. That latter aspect I think would particularly affect me.... Rather loopy eccentric person talking about soldiering But then conscription in the past accepted lots of nutters!

Edited by: Vogue on 18/04/2011 04:13:22 The USA and any of its allies that tag along that engage with deposing despotic regimes (that are of strategic interest - oil) simply have to follow the mantra 'if you want to make an omlette you have to break some eggs'. There is no pretty or elegant way that does not involve collateral damage in prosecuting a war to get rid of an autocratic regime. And winning a war is one thing, winning a long term peace is something else. Especially in countries that have different tribal ethnic groups that once kept under an iron fist by a fascist leader will erupt into civil war once the heads of the hydra have been chopped off but its body still thrashes.
Sometimes you need to give peace a chance and sometimes you need to give war a chance.

Edited by: Vogue on 19/04/2011 20:32:53 Edited by: Vogue on 19/04/2011 20:28:59 What is the quiet elephant in the room is China's global assent. It is sending its top politicians to lesser countries all over the world like pop stars. China is quietly and effectively doing bottom up statecraft: gardening - sowing the seeds of sustainable economic - political relationships. It is pursuing a very calibrated long term game in securing economic supply chains everywhere in the globe.
The USA is doing the opposite a top down ad hoc whackamole approach. It's a bum deal for the USA though as they are lumped with the good the bad and the ugly - all sorts of countries that are in the US's strategic sphere. But the US is just trying to do weeding without planting the seeds of political relationships with freedom seeking groups in the middle east. Instead the president talking the big game of spreading democratic principles to oppressed countries he should have the emerging liberal leaders from Libya, Egypt in the Whitehouse. The president can quietly play the Machiavellian dark game of propping up foul regimes such as the old Egypt. But it seems Obama is averse to directly and publicly engaging with brave freedom fighters from around the world that have a credible democratic mandate.
So you have the USA firefighting around the world in a incoherent way. The EU is as usual fudging and being cowardly. Though France is stepping up to the plate with Britain. But for Libya no one is willing to enter the quagmire of ground war. But international co-operation will always be an ass as it is not like team sports where all the players on one side consider their team mates as equals fighting for one singular common objective. It seems to be more like a guild of thieves where its members cling on to their hard won prizes and they cast a jealous watching gaze over other players who are out for lucrative spoils. If there is a large threat that has a converging interest then many players will act as unison. But otherwise and most of the time there is much discord. This is why USA plays top dog. But a dog gets fleas
For the first time a Chinese missile destroyer has gone to a a global hotspot zone - In the Mediterranean near Libya. China is dipping its toe in the water and will further see what it is like walking into the torrents of interventionist politics. It has not yet tried to deal with the crappy international problems that the US has where the public has limited stomach for seeing their brave soldiers die in fighting wars that have no end game in sight.

Edited by: Vogue on 20/04/2011 11:46:20 As for being obnoxious and abrasive. It is worthwhile if it is credible and illuminates points of interest. Donald Trump is these things. But you would you want to live in a country with him if you agree with him or not as it is a sign of a healthy democracy that has open debate.
