I'd like to see an option to have a first-person view when in a ship, with a virtual HUD or control board showing all the info you need.
Feedback? Ideas?

This would be interesting, though a larger undertaking than you might think.

That's the view we already have.
You gotta remember we're in a capsule, filled with goo, cables stuck in our body and the view we see is from a camera drone floating around our ship.
This gets suggested a lot, but honestly read the fiction and you'll see that we are viewing the game from a first person perspective

lol, because that's not a total cop-out explanation of why 3rd person is actually 1st person.
Seriously, I laughed audibly.

You realise the oldest lore surrounding EVE is that we're stuck in a pod with camera drones as our eyes. It isn't a cop out when a the game was built on that idea.

My point is it was a design decision from the beginning, not just tacked on.
EVE can only handle so many inputs a second, it was designed to play more like a turn based RPG or a real time strategy game, not a twitch based shooter. What view do you have for a turn based RPG or a real time strategy game? Third, because it's the most convenient way of displaying all information.
Now if EVE was designed to be a shooter, it probably would have been first person.
By all means I would ****ing love a first person view, but I appreciate the fact that it just does not suit the gameplay, because what else would you like to do with a first person view? Yeah, control the ship directly either using mouse movements, keyboard, joystick etc. Just can't do that in as large an online environment such as EVE.
This is why games like Black Prophecy, which is twitch based and supports first person, is on split servers.

I completely understand the design decisions behind making the game 3rd person. Nobody is arguing that they didn't design it that way from the beginning. My point is, if they decided to put a first person POV in the game, it would not be hard to modify the "lore" as it were to allow it. Lore is just a way of immersing the player further into the game and its story. To cite lore as the reason for not putting a feature such as a different POV in the game is a cop-out.

Edited by: Logan LaMort on 18/04/2011 23:20:33 Perfectly fine with adding more lore, I'm just saying that's the current lore. I mean lore has it we can't be cloned outside of a controlled environment, but with DUST soldiers being able to clone that's all going to change.
Like I said I would love a real first person view, but it's implementing it in a way that makes sense and is technically doable.
For example, playing as your avatar on the bridge just isn't technically possible and defeats the point of being a pod pilot, although would be awesome.
However having a fixed camera position on the ship model with a different FOV and some interesting HUD overlay, like a reinforced camera attached to the ship, would fit with the lore and be a compromise to first person, not an amazing solution but a step in the right direction.
I'm all for suggestions on how to go about it, but the OP never provided any. - EDIT: Virtual HUD and control board sounds like the Neocom and overview to me.

Why nerf yourself? Surely being able to see all around the ship at any one time is better? Also all the information you need is already on your 'HUD', it's called the neocom.

I imagine that another erason they chose this way is that in an MMO one of the reasons to continue playing is seeing your character develop as it levels up (gets better/cooler armor weapons etc).
In Eve we dont have this, so we 'see' ourselves piloting better ships etc.
With a first person view it would get pretty 'same-old' very quickly. ------------------------ Jint Hikaru - Miner / Salvager / Explorer / SpaceBum "I've got a couple of Strippers on my ship... and they just love to dance!" ------------------------ |

There already is a first person view for eve. Press the power button on your monitor, voila, thats what it looks like inside your pod. If you want to go back to 3rd person, just press the button again.

I'm confused... Are you saying that you want the camera to be locked in one position facing outside the front of the ship?
It would suck not being aware of your surroundings and relying entirely on your overview.

I snickered.
But you forget the step where you would need to be sitting in a bathtub full of slightly runny pancake batter with a vacuum cleaner hose stuck up your ass when you do this. --Vel
