Back in the IT days it was easy Reimbursement + Insurance > ship cost.
Basicly being paid to PvP. Now I have to use my margintrading alt for revenue generation.

My corp does wars.
All the loot goes to the corp and sold. Every couple of weeks, corp expenses are deducted (POS fuel, wars), then the remaining amount is divided among the number of total kills.
This yields a certain amount of ISK per kill. Let's say 8 or 10 million ISK/kill, average.
After that, it's easy. You got 20 kills in those days? You get 160-200 millions.
You don't kill > you get nothing. You kill a lot > you get hundreds of millions, or even billions.
The good thing is that rich kills (freighters, etc) improve the quality of the isk/kill ratio for everyone. If you're unlucky and you only get thrash through gates, but your buddies score a big hit, everybody benefits.
As long as you participate in the kills.
I am not very active at all nowadays, but real PvPers in my corp fund themselves with this system perfectly fine, doing nothing but killing war targets and people in 0.0
Add another account for mission running/mining/whatever, and there you are. Losses covered and accounts paid for.

How much ISK you need depends on how much you spend which (for a pvper) depends how how many ships you have, how much you pimp them and how often you lose them.
If, like me, your need to own stuff is modest and you don't die much you can get by fine with less than a billion ISK per character.
I made my first billion by selling a few GTCs to raise some capital and then trading stuff in empire.
You'll need some ISK before you start doing this so that you can buy cheaply in bulk and afford to wait until everything sells.
Once you've identified your market and have 20-30 orders up ISK will start to trickle in. Where you go from there is up to you.
Also don't forget to pvp in what you can afford to lose. It doesn't matter how much ISK you make, if you lose ships that cost more than you can replace eventually you will run short of ISK.
If you are new to pvp, fly cheap as you'll make lots of mistakes so you shouldn't be afraid of dying a lot - instead expect it and budget accordingly. As you become more confident and experienced you can spend more on your fleet but never sink all your ISK into a single ship.
Good Luck!

Since the sanctum and haven nerf, I've turned to more efficient PI and using smaller cheaper T2 ships to be able to keep up.
Working out decently I think.

max out scanning skills or buy alt. Learn what signature exploration sites yeild the most isk. Or the easy way of fidning direct 00 wormholes ( trade secret) so pve
Otherwise pvp loot sell
Suicide ganking afk haulers in empire with bil hauls is good
Not dying of course and flying in small gangs avoding the big ones and shooting targets u can kill
Suicide gank hulks
Find offline poses
Fly a grup of expensive ships as long as u have scouts and good tactics u can pawn anything that moves
War decs on empire carebear corps
Killing bots in 00 ( takes some strategy and patience)

I don't have time to do the PVE bit to sustain my PVP. I have one account, 1 main, never had an alt account. I used to station trade to make ISK but can't be bothered with that any more. I figure I earn enough real money to not have to worry about spending time doing something I don't want to do, to enable me to do something I want to do. I also augment my income by buying cheap contract deals whereever I see them and reselling them one way or the other to make a profit.
Its also helped that I've adjusted my play style to not having vast amounts of time and ISK any more. I usually fly logistics which I get 100% replaced by my alliance or other ship types which they reimburse or provide hulls for. If I fly outside alliance or coalition fleets/ctas I fly cheap and disposable ships like SB's, cruisers, Interceptors, AF's, dictors and BC's.
Not dying also helps keeps costs down, as does not suicide podding and only one of my jump clones has any sort of implants which are +3's. Got to that point where SP's and training as fast as possible isn't such an issue anymore.

Very interesting responses. It runs the gamut, which is about what I expected, but there are some interesting tidbits in there (PI can make you that much!? I started PI this past weekend so I don't know yet where it'll take me, but happy to hear if I do it right it has a bright ISK future). Thanks all.

Fly cheap and learn to win. I'm good at the first part, never did get the hang of the latter.
T1 cruisers, BC's, Ass frigs, all easy to fly and cheap to buy. Pick your fights and learn to gtfo when the situation goes south.
Really its a silly question, how do you earn money in general? Just balance your PVP time against your PVE time. You shoudl be asking 'how can i get good at PVP without loosing lots of isk?' As you learn more about PVP, your losses will get less and you'll be able to spend more time on it and less time on PVE.

Good advice. And yeah, sort of a silly question, because it's not like I don't know oodles about all the ways to make ISK in Eve, I was just curious to hear some personal tales and anecdotes about how others are doing it without the help of a huge corp/alliance wallet.

Station trading is a lucrative activity and fairly low effort with only minor SP requirements. Buy low, sell high, etc.
But the real trick to making isk without burning yourself out is to diversify. Keep your PvP character where the action is and then fill any time left over with a couple of low effort isk making activities. If I want fast isk, up to a couple of hundred mil then I'll run a few missions or rat, otherwise I have steady income from invention and station trading.
I'm also tempted by PI but I've heard it can be allot of grief to get going so I'm not sure on that yet.

If you learn how to play decently, you can easily fund yuor PvP. If you turn out how to play very well and build up to the big games, you can roll in ISK.
For an example check out the thread in Character Forum by xProphetx, he won 10b last night and just bought himself another alt to have fun with...

Sorry faceless alt, you must be confusing WTF and the NC with the DRF. At least where WTF is concerned the reimbursment program is pretty good but so is the industry and strategic logistics to support that.
