When you start training a skill and note that the initial time remaining is under two weeks, which mentally prompts you to say, "Oh, a short one."
You experienced gaming life before the skill queue.
You mined or ratted in any of Jita's asteroid belts.
Popping a rat either dropped a loot container or nothing (no wrecks, much less salvaging).
Due to Privateer's rampant war declarations of numerous corporations, you remember when CCP changed the costs involved to have numerous declarations.
Loosing a cruiser was devastating while seeing a battleship was awe inspiring.
More as my old memory kicks them out.
I remember a few of these, skill queue and rats with no loot/wreck, learning skills etc. But my total playtime before januari this year was about 6months over a ~6 year period. Still noobing.

When you have fought just about everyone, you know their tricks and who they fly with, you can spot their newb alts by the way they fly.
When have perfected every exploit that CCP doesn't consider an exploit.
When you are bitter... jaded works too.

LOL this.
Also - You think of the good ole days where you would have fights because of warp to 15.
When kernite was a rare commodity
When flying a battleship with sub-battleship mods was worthwhile (just having a battleship was awesome)
When your game would freeze for 5 minutes because it had to load 10,000+ bookmarks
When losing a titan would cause alliances to collapse.

I consider myself a "veteran" mission buster. Aside from that, I'm still learning.
When you have made every single mistake in one field of the game, I believe that when you can call yourself a veteran.

A veteran what? I've been on TS with people who have played for years who voice opinions on things like manufacturing/invention who make it obviously clear from what they say they've never done it, yet they're very skilled in areas I've never ventured much into.

I started playing when the game was released back in 2003, so i'm pretty much beyond veteran status and more into the dinosaur territory...

You are a vet in EvE when you can explain game mechanics to other players correctly even though you have never actually used the mechanics in question.

You are a veteran when:
General Discussion topics have repeated at least 30 times. Or at least it seems so. You have outlived former corp mates and leaders. You've actually started an alt from scratch with no assistance to "bring back the magic".

Quote: VetŠer`an Pronunciation: vĕtŠẽr`an a. 1. Long exercised in anything, especially in military life and the duties of a soldier; long practiced or experienced; as, a veteran officer or soldier; veteran skill. The insinuating eloquence and delicate flattery of veteran diplomatists and courtiers. - Macaulay. n. 1. One who has been long exercised in any service or art, particularly in war; one who has had much experience, or has grown old or decrepit in service. Ensigns that pierced the foe's remotest lines, The hardy veteran with tears resigns.
I would say that you are a vet after you have played for several years and have completed the play cycle at least once.

People have called me a walking eve encyclopedia before, but never been called a vet.
I'm probably a good candidate for it though, I've been though the three stages of:
1. Trying everything the game has to offer over several years. 2. Getting hardcore eve burnout, quitting and playing another MMO 3. Getting sickened by that other MMO and coming back to play a hell of a lot more casually
In my mind, eve veteran status is obtained when you get to the point of realising its internet spaceships, and although its srs business, its also hilarious. When you can sincerely not care about any loss, even if its a financially ruinous one, and potentially enjoy the process of scraping back up as much as the process of being on top (even if that doesn't happen much, or at all), you're a vet.

Edited by: McFly on 30/04/2011 07:12:57 imho a vet is...
1. someone that starts training a skill just because its a skill that hasn't been trained regardless of what it does.
2. someone that can tell noobs about game changes like waking up at 3am to change a skill, pre-warp to zero, mines, cruise missiles on kestrels, the Nibelung Mining laser, T2 BPO Lottery etc...
3. someone that remembers eve before goons, or remembers RA's amazing comeback from a single system, or the original alliances, CA, FA, SA, etc...
4. remembering the amazingly awesome sauce of Gankgeddons, or Pirating being a profession in lowsec, or when T2 was so expensive that looting a can was income. 100mil covops cloaks anyone?
Vet = Somehow still being here after having been beaten with every nerfbat CCP has.
