Just a quick question I would like to ask the community as a whole. When do you become/ considered a veteran? Is this a place reserved for players from the beginning? Would I after playing from 05 be considered old enough to call myself a veteran?
I ask due to the sudden influx of self titled ôvetsö complaining about things, and in some cases talking on behalf of all vets.(note* IÆm not say if they are or are not veterans but this is how the introduce themselves)
So what is the age/ needs to be seen as a veteran of eve online?
P.S This is unless what they mean by vet, is a veterinary worker, in which case I donÆt see what its relevance is half the time

I only ask as some people claiming to be a veteran I could really disagree with (they only have 2-3 years) while I would personally see myself as a veteran, after clocking up around 6 and a bit years.
I'm only really asking so we all and can understand who the real veterans are, and who is just trying to big themselves up to make it sound like their point is more valid.

The real question becomes, why do you care what they call themselves? Is there some benefit to being an "offically sanctioned veteran"? Cause it sounds like it's all about your epeen.

no there is no benefit to it at all. It just annoys the hell out of me someone says things like "99% of vets think this" when they don't, and the famous line of "as a vet I think (a current rage topic) and is wasting all the money me and other vets put in" when the "posting" character is only a year old. OK don't know how old there main is (if that is not there main ans is an alt which it most Probably is)but can a one year old account really call themselves a vet?
but yes at the end of the day it is only epeen as you rightfully say, so this is a pointless topic, but an interesting discussion all the same, and might I add something different.

Some (potential) veteran signs:
When you train another skill level not because you desire or need the skill, but just to keep the points rolling since you paid for it through a subscription fee.
When you start training a skill and note that the initial time remaining is under two weeks, which mentally prompts you to say, "Oh, a short one."
You experienced gaming life before the skill queue.
You mined or ratted in any of Jita's asteroid belts.
Popping a rat either dropped a loot container or nothing (no wrecks, much less salvaging).
Due to Privateer's rampant war declarations of numerous corporations, you remember when CCP changed the costs involved to have numerous declarations.
Loosing a cruiser was devastating while seeing a battleship was awe inspiring.
More as my old memory kicks them out.

I pretty much agree with this. I'd imagine it wouldn't apply to people who've been playing since the very beginning, though.
Personally, I've been playing since late 2007. I don't know if that makes me a veteran, but I'm pretty sure I'm not a newbie anymore.

People have called me a walking eve encyclopedia before, but never been called a vet.
I'm probably a good candidate for it though, I've been though the three stages of:
1. Trying everything the game has to offer over several years. 2. Getting hardcore eve burnout, quitting and playing another MMO 3. Getting sickened by that other MMO and coming back to play a hell of a lot more casually
In my mind, eve veteran status is obtained when you get to the point of realising its internet spaceships, and although its srs business, its also hilarious. When you can sincerely not care about any loss, even if its a financially ruinous one, and potentially enjoy the process of scraping back up as much as the process of being on top (even if that doesn't happen much, or at all), you're a vet.

I agree "veteran" is a relative term rather than an absolute one.
A veteran has seen the game world change and evolve. It is mandatory for a veteran to be able to say things like "Back in MY days, we didn't have X.", or "lol, remember when back in A, X was still Y?"
So for someone who came in after tyrannis, I am already a veteran. "Back in MY day, we didn't have farmville in EVE. Noo, we had to go ALL THE WAY to facebook for that!"

When you can remember really significant events/changes in EVE - and everything related to those events has been made inconsequential by later events.
Wherever you went - Here you are.

To answer your question. 1) When you have "quit" EvE more times then you care to remember.
2) When you remember having to work your ass of (months) to be able to afford a BS.
"veteran player" is an obvious but relative term in the world of internets gaming. To a newb a one year old focused combat char can be a "vet".
"sudden influx of vets" What statistics are you basing this statement on? Where is your baseline?

wow, was really not expecting so many replies. (and ones on topic and not flaming me)
I like some of the definitions that have been used. it has helped, I know for me, to see where some self proclaimed vets may be coming from now.
now would paper say that as a relative term, it would depend on the topic in which it is used?

we need a new term in-between noob and veteran as player just dose not cut it
Think a great many ppl would fall into the catagory the op describes. Its all relative but theres plenty of ppl that are certainly not noobs but really arent vets either. Naming the noun for these players and their characteristics is possibly an easier task than defining a "vet".
This task completed, the "what is a veteran?" question may become easier. x

If you go around calling yourself a vet, then you are noob. If you go around trying hard to be a vet, then you are a noob. If you play the game and don't actually think about being a vet, then you are prolly a vet.

Edited by: Guthwulf on 01/05/2011 15:52:19 A veteren; generally someone who has seen most of the game, played most of the game....and despite being so cynical it hurts, they just keep coming back for more more.
And the memories that go back so far they make eve as it is now look and feel almost entirely shiney and new :D.
However if your mains 8th birthday is 5 days from now and you remember screamng through 0.8 sec belts chucking out mines and missiles as if your life depended on it (when ur a few days old those rats are nasty). And lowsec and 0.0 not only weren't dangerous they were just empty. Then ultimatly your probably too old to care about being a bitter vet and the state of the game. You just kick back and let all those fiesty youngsters get on with it ;)
