Moira (and by extention) Rote Kapelle and Veto, have nailed their colours to Soter's boasts at the head of this thread that the Fraction will be driven from Placid and prevented in our operations. We have been promised a broadening of military operations and options from Soter's troops (which so far have been purely defensive.)
Not to muddy this otherwise spectacular thread, but I should mention that Moria. remains neutral to Rote and as such, as you well know, remain viable targets for our ships, making our colors hardly nailed to Soter's words. I attempted some military action last night around Ostin"hell" and the surrounds, but the only challenge to be found between mine and the beautiful, Usagi's, drakes was a exhilarating if near deadly brush with a fleet that was decidedly not led by SF. Though I suppose that was on the other side of Loes. We did note a Star Fraction Bomber undock stacmon in route to Ostin"hell."
Originally by: Jade Constantine The outcome of this conflict will most likely be determined by who retains a presence in Pelille/Ostingele/Placid long term and who is able to operate uninterrupted beyond the power of the other to interdict.
What is interesting currently is the degree of advantage that the Veto/Kapelle/Moira block currently have in raw numbers and offensive capability while still being rather negative and risk adverse in space. Time will tell if they find the courage to move against our instrastructure or whether they will contain their operations to random lone strikes and deafening forum bleating.
Clearly, you must know you are the center of our universe as well as your own. We, being Rote, spend nothing but time worrying about what The Star Fraction is up to. We were so worried by your recent move to Ostingele that we had to call for the support of the Pirates of Veto. We are so worried about your infrastructure as a target, it's just a matter of time before we launch an all out strike on you. Our master-stroke will be forthcoming where we will sally from our roach-hotels and scuttle down upon you like a plague from the past. Don't worry though, we are too risk adverse to actually engage your towers, and will turn around in frustration when we realize our risk adverse natures will not allow us to engage you on anything but favorable terms.
In the meantime we will continue to operate as we see fit, from TXW-EL, Syndicate, fighting those enemies who wish to engage, even if we have to jump into them, risk adverse as we are. Killing what we can, as usual. Enjoy your war and good luck! I'd follow your killboard but it's a little slow to keep my attention. Eve Opportunist |

Originally by: Jereth Ravyn Normally I'm more than happy to leave the thankless task of communicating through these channels to my fellow Free Captains, but on this occasion I just wanted to say I'm honored. While I am slightly embarrassed to be the first Fraction capsule lost in this conflict, I am amused that I would have the honor of "fighting" you all 20 to 1, good odds for any Free Captain. Please be sure to contact me if any of those T-Shirts get made, I totally want one.
You were the Tengu pilot? The things Cerui is doing to your corps. It's enough to make this capsuleer blush.
Really, if you wish to take issue with your solitary death you should take it up with your commander whom abandoned you. When our initial tackle shut down your warp drive you were surrounded by an unkindness of Ravens Battleships supported by logistics vessels. Why they didn't even attempt to clear the ship pinning you down, I simply can't imagine.
It wasn't our hope that you would perish alone.

Sometimes you need to rhetoric to get the enemy out of their station. Either that or you could simply cross your fingers and hope. Anyway, if you don't like the thread feel free to do something about it beyond flapping your own gums.

+++ Post Battle Updates in the Placid theatre û Destruction of Moira HQ tower ôArgosö Achieved.
ItÆs been a busy three weeks since the last update here so I will bring everyone up to speed. Following intervention of a Rote Kapelle/Veto group to save the Moira HQ in Pelille System there was an escalation in local and forum exchanges tracked elsewhere in several threads. Rote/Veto leaders talked grimly of having ôtheir hands forcedö and ôyouÆre in for it now!ö and we in the Fraction were still digesting the lessons of the most expensive 24 hours in the conflict which had seen us lose a half dozen Ravens, a faction-fit Tengu and Sleipnir class Command Ship to primarily Rote/Veto again with Moira sharing in the spoils.
It was clear that weÆd need to change tactics now Moira had discovered allies, sponsors, shareholders or however else they would characterize their support now. We didnÆt bemoan or complain these reversals because such is the way of New Eden, we are well used-to fighting against the odds and confronting sitting territorial powers with cunning and cloak and guerrilla tactics and we brushed ourselves down and steeled for a continuance of heavy fighting.
And we werenÆt to be disappointed!
On the first day of the capsuleer alliance tournament IX (timed precisely to occur as our team were beginning their first match) A sizeable Rote/Veto capital/super-capital group cynoÆed into Pelille to assault our Cassini Division staging tower against minimal opposition it must be said. As our team was fighting away in Jovian space our first tower gunners scrambled to action and we noted to our amusement that every single enemy ship was named ôMaybe next time....ö while the Veto cyno falcon was cheerfully tagged ôGL in the tourney!ö
Suffice to say the Pelille tower was comprehensively incapacitated and reinforced to the obvious pleasure of the lone Moira representative in the group.
Rote/Veto then jumped across to Ostingele and moved to assault Space and Freedom V tower while we were commiserating our team for the first round defeat and this time our gunners were able to obliterate the Veto Falcon and a Rote Kapelle Drake in the time it took for the 100+ enemy ships to reinforce the defensive position.
[ 2011.05.29 17:07:43 ] (notify) Cynosural Field I has just left Pelille as of 2S ago [ 2011.05.29 17:08:47 ] (notify) Orbiting GL in the Tourney Wreck (2500m)
Satisfyingly we also executed Julianus Soter in a Dominix class vessel who chose to inspect the incapacity-status of Cassini Division back in Pelille and discovered to his shock weÆd repaired and onlined enough guns to alpha strike his ship to oblivion while his allies were busy in Ostingele.
Still, this was an impressive show of strength from Rote/Veto and it looked like theyÆd been stung by our suggestions that they re-name their alliance to ô(tower) Rep-Kapelleö following their sterling repair work in Pelille and had decided to show us what a real supercapital-armed elite combat alliance (and another alliance) could do.
Then to add insult to injury Rote Kapelle declared a formal war-dec against the Star Fraction to ensure we had nowhere to hide from their forces and they could pursue us to the depths of hisec with their fast patrols and veteran crusaders of the Kimotoro War (albeit mostly those from the wrong side). This was grave indeed!

We did what we could, repairing all incapacitated guns and anchoring additional cpu-independent offensive modules, effectively doubling the damage output of the towers and preparing for the reinforcement battles to come. For a time we were clearly on the defensive and faced by a great number of enemy forces and even Soter seemed to have recovered his faith in victory showing his face in Ostingele and rattling his (borrowed) spear on the forums!
When the day came great spacial instabilities played havoc with our repair parties delaying our shield repair on Cassini Division for around nine hours while nonetheless robbing the tower of any natural shield recharge. This was bad! Instead of emerging from reinforcement early in our favoured timezone and ôway earlyö for RoteÆs û we faced instead an uphill struggle to repair our tower in a period of increasing Rote/Veto activity knowing at any moment they could drop a couple of dozen capital ships to win the battle in moments if they only had the courage to take the risk.
So we laboured with around 20 Scimitar/Basilisk class logistics ships with the eyes of Rote scouts clearly upon us. It was nervous and back-breaking work, but within a couple of hours weÆd undone the damage the Roach-Motel capitals had achieved and refuelled and rearmed the towers completely.
Why hadnÆt they attacked? Who knows really, perhaps they were unable to muster the traditional 5-1 odds reckoned a prerequisite for assaulting fixed positions. Perhaps they were busy practising with their tourney team to ensure their ship-naming boasts didnÆt come back to haunt them. Perhaps theyÆd gotten wind of traps and upsets planned? ItÆs likely weÆll never know, but in the wake of their failure to capitalize on the weekend assault, the advantage eroded and we demonstrated our ability to defend and repair our own towers quite effectively.
We chose the moment to celebrate our own corporate eight year anniversary thread on the Intergalactic Summit and as usual it filled with plenty of bile-fuelled ranting from our enemies; most surreal of all proving to be the Rote/VetoÆs leadership assessment of the Cassini Division/Space and Freedom assault, being ôsuccessfulö, despite having failed to achieve anything but a disproportionate waste of their own time/resources/effort and loss of 3 Moira coalition ships to no reply.
Hmmm, in the weeks to come weÆd show them what a successful tower assault looked like...
On a plus point the Rote Kapelle war-declaration provided a wonderful opportunity to revisit one of the Star FractionÆs most famed war-tactics ... ômission-runner assassination!ö We began to build up comprehensive lists of Rote personnel, comparing their nightly activity patterns, their location in TXW-EI vs other places. Tracked those who liked to sit in Aliastra Transport station in Syndicate against those who were off doing ôother thingsö deep in empire and slowly but surely we assembled our hit-list of possible soft targets.
And it wasnÆt long before rewards began to arrive. Mission-running Maelstrom obliterated and podded to howls of anguish from the Rote warrior-aristocracy in TXW. Incursion-running Golem ambushed and executed to an epic page of internecine rage from Rote directors and members arguing that those that declared the war against SF would be better off fighting it rather than trolling our anniversary thread!

It seemed the war-dec had misfired significantly and rather than allowing Rote to demonstrate its claimed superiority over the Fraction had simply revealed that Rote was like any other nullsec alliance û powerful in groups and musters but a bit fat and lazy on their own and in the habit of presenting very juice targets for seasoned guerrilla fighters to stalk and murder in the depths of hisec.
Moira were not spared these deep-empire patrols either, and many of their members fell victim to traps and ambushes in the mission-running heartlands as it became evident that the failure of Rote/Veto to progress the tower-war in Placid seemed to have broken the fighting-spirit of Moira itself (and specifically their leader Julianus Soter) and they were choosing increasingly to base themselves a long way from Placid many dozens of jumps from the warzone.
Our advanced scouts highlighted the likely new Moira base being in Thelan System (Sinq Liason) where the majority of their corporation now seemed active from a location very remote from Pelille and the Star Fraction and a great distance from SoterÆs boasts to drive the Fraction from Placid.
But enough with the foreplay now, we knew that Moira wanted to break and run. We knew that they had been disappointed with the support of their patrons in Rote/Veto but equally knew that SoterÆs misplaced pride and stubbornness would never let him surrender or seek terms again after Verone had promised to get him out of the war ôwithout loss of faceö.
We needed to destroy the Moira HQ tower ôArgosö in Pelille and we needed to do it under the noses of the Rote/Veto capital fleet knowing our enemies in TXW-EI would go to any lengths to disrupt our assault to salve their own increasingly wounded pride at the lone assassinations of their mission-runners in empire.
The key to victory was the Fedaykin class Torpedo bomber which had served us well in the rearguard actions in YWS0-Z and would allow us to reinforce ôArgosö without presenting a vulnerable siege group for enemy hot-drops to target. We planned the attack to great detail. Stand-off RavenÆs would incapacitate the electronic warfare batteries and light guns to enable our Fedaykin class bombers to operate in on the tower and press the enemy. We planned multiple days of guerrilla pressure û half a dozen musters at least û counterintelligence schemes to distract the enemy, operational security to the maximum. Everything was prepared and ready to spring into action and then...
The art of war is sometimes one of discipline, of calculation and delicate risk/reward assessment. It can be a matter of planning and provision, logistics and movement, it can a great game of bluff and counter bluff and then sometimes.
It can also be a farce.
Somebody in Moira messed up. The HQ tower in Pelille was improperly supplied and supplies of liquid ozone were allowed to burn out because the proportions of fuel resources were not correctly balanced. The result was that all the tower defence turrets and systems went offline while the shield remained in place.
We had only a little time to react. If Moira personnel had still be in Pelille and if Soter had been on the ball then their solution was simply to add some more liquid ozone and begin re-powering turrets û 10 minutes would have been sufficient to recover the situation sufficiently to drive off our assault.
But nobody came.

[224]
And an ad-hoc collection of free-captains took it upon themselves to circumvent our carefully discussed plans for incremental tower assault and hit the tower shields directly with a squadron of Fedaykin bombers knowing that if they could reinforce the tower before Soter could replace the missing Liquid Ozone from the fuel bay then it would be impossible for Moira to online weaponry prior to the reinforcement battle to come.
It took an hour and 45 minutes. But nobody came.
Is often said of warfare in New Eden that you only win when the enemy loses the will to fight and that night in Pelille symbolizes this truism perfectly. A war that began with Julianus Soter trying to bar freespace transit to the Free Captains of the Star Fraction had progressed to the point where the man could no longer motivate himself to travel a few jumps to add Liquid Ozone to his own corporate HQ tower in order to give his corpmates a fighting chance at the reinforcement battle.
Now we had a huge advantage. Having locked ôArgosö into a liquid-ozone deficient state we knew MoiraÆs sole remaining hope was to defend the tower with ships in space the following day and hope they could refuel and repair the shields while staving off our bomber assault.
We decided to make sure of our advantage by incapacitating the offline defensive systems early on Sunday afternoon and completed this in an hour and half using Fedaykin boosted by carrier deployed fighters of the 1st revolutionary rocket rangers attack wing.
And then it was time for the final assault.
With the tower coming out of reinforcement at 18:30 hours we moved into position with a strong wing of Fedaykin bombers (22) backed by a small group of space-superiority warships (Cynabal/Rapier/Dramiel) to protect the torpedo vessels.
Moira (to their credit) in the notable absence of Soter on the battlefield had formed up with a group of assault frigates/interceptors/destroyers and a couple of cruisers to go down fighting in a last stand at their HQ.
Almost immediately the Moira skirmish wing left the tower shields and engaged our bomber group managing to destroy a Purifier class Fedakyin at the cost of several assault frigates. Moira casualties went to reship and we continued firing on the now beleaguered tower. This would be repeated many times over the next 60 minutes as we removed the tower shields and began firing torpedoes into the armour and structure of the Moira HQ. Enemy ships would leave the shields only to be fired upon by waves of torpedoes guided with unerring accuracy by a dozen painter beams to targets suddenly immobilized by Rapier webs and bomber scramblers.
For Moira the situation was hopeless.
Our scouts in TXW-EI reported that Rote Kapelle (with no obvious Veto assistance this time) was preparing to move. No evidence of their Titan pilots online û but carrier class vessels powering up. We assumed this would be another ride for ôRep-Kapelleö and deploying to the edge of the Moira defence shields theyÆd enter triage and repair the tower in a half an hour perhaps.
Our counter tactic was simply to continue. We destroyed a pair of Moira cyno-equipped cruisers as they attempted to get into the bomber formation before a third effort in a Stabber was finally successful and projected a sustained cyno-beacon close to one of our bombers.
Rote Kapelle arrived in 5 carriers equipped not with shield transporters but with smartbombs and proceeded to annihilate an unfortunate Fraction purifier while the rest of our force made distance and engaged cloak.

We watched for a few minutes to see what these capital vessels would do presuming they might at least remain and offer some aid to their allies but it wasnÆt to be. Before the friendly Cyno was even down the Rote capital ships cynoÆed out again back to TXW-EI leaving the Moira pilot to his fate as our bombers returned and sent him to hell alongside the last remaining interceptor pilot outside the shields who tried bravely to defend his comrade.
So much for that really.
This was the last show of defiance from Moira and our bomber group was able to complete the destruction of ôArgosö tower in another 20 minutes demonstrating our ability to successfully assault a fixed position with a couple of dozen ships that had eluded Rote/VetoÆs ability (and willpower) with a hundred. One might think an object lesson in humility can be read there.
Destroying all offensive modules and equipment at the site of the wrecked HQ we spared the laboratories/reaction chambers/silos etc and carried them over to [AISA] New Center of Commerce: Agoze IX-2 where I placed the economic equipment on auction contract with a generous buyout discount if anyone else would like to reuse these manufacturing systems in a less regressive manner in the future!
Rote Kapelle then punctuated affairs by retracting their unwise wardec obviously hoping to close their accounts on the smartbombing carrier victory over our brave Fedaykin. As wryly noted on comms by one of our veteran pilots ... ôthey really donÆt like it up them!ö
Unfortunately for the Rote wardec retraction strategy - later that same evening our pathfinders discovered yet another mission-runner deep in empire who seemed to have learned little from the Kimotoro campaign and we executed the target as a final farewell present for Bacchanalian and his merry band of brigands out in TXW-EI.
So where does that leave us?
Over the 45 days run time of this conflict so far the Fraction has now completed the destruction of the Moira regional HQ in Pelille system ôArgosö while successfully defending our own staging towers from all MoiraÆs allies.
We have increased and intensified our own presence and patrolling in the region while seeing MoiraÆs presence drop to virtually nothing. Moira itself appears eager to depart from Placid at this point for their new home from home in Sinq Liason.
While one can see that the Rote/Veto attempt at intervention did represent SoterÆs intention to escalate in order to drive Star Fraction from Placid I believe we can all see this has comprehensively failed at achieving anything beyond a little impotent angry forum noise.
In terms of fighting in space, the Fraction has destroyed 3 vessels for every casualty weÆve taken against the collective forces opposing us in MoiraÆs interest. We have been largely successful in every significant engagement of the war. With the destruction of ôArgosö and the proceeds of executing Rote Kapelle missioners we are also (rather incredibly) now definitively ahead even in raw isk terms having pulled back a 3billion isk deficient in a couple of weeks. Not bad for a "talentless" entity outnumbered by more than 5 to 1 in pilots in a hostile warzone I think youÆll agree!
In terms of the end of the war the ball is now in MoiraÆs court. The sensible thing would be for Soter to realize he has been defeated in Placid and now has no way of projecting his will against the Fraction or enforcing his desire to see us ôdrivenö from the Region we choose to operate in.

As always we are open to diplomatic approach and as long as Soter can manage to avoid bringing a blustering pirate braggart to the negotiations next time he might be surprised at just how reasonable our terms for concluding such conflicts can be.
But it has been useful as an object lesson. The Free Captains of the Fraction do not react well to threats from anyoneÆs ôbig brotherö and we will never back down from a rightful conflict regardless of who your friends are. And with friends like Verone - *laughs* you really donÆt need more enemies.

Originally by: Julianus Soter They have not indicated what the purpose of this wardec is, what the terms of surrender might be, or what their objectives are. However, according to official records, the combat is going quite well for us as of this time. Indeed, what was more interesting during the wardec thus far was the number of successes against other pirate organizations in spite of the Star Fraction wardec. 20 hostile ships were destroyed on Saturday and Sunday combined, only four of which were Star Fraction. Moira. Corporation is investigating offensive operations to deal with Star Fraction's operations in the Placid Region. Their destabilizing activities, while once a minor annoyance to the region's inhabitants, can no longer be tolerated.
