Edited by: Kalle Demos on 07/05/2011 18:09:06 During a conversation about the world in general, she confessed that she gets most of her news from FOX News, Al Jareeza and Youtube.
Now I could go in detail on what she 'believes' but I think it is pretty obvious, after years of hearing crazy conspiracies that sound like they were written by EN24, it now all makes sense.
Oh and I dont watch TV or any media related stuff AT ALL, there is enough propaganda and bull**** in EVE to keep me entertained.
Oh and the conversation started with Nutella and got derailed to the Illuminati WTF?! Apparently I am blinded by mind controlling food .

I'm not sure I see the problem. What I'm getting at is that what real difference does it make if your sister retains her current world view compared to converting her to your way of thinking?

The key to news is to not look directly at it or you'll turn to stone of apathy.

OP why do your have a TV on kitchen ? TV are not good tools to make food, TV should be only a source of recipes nothing more, but i suggest that you should use google recipes service and print the recipe on paper for her

So there really is no issue then? At least your sister watches multiple news sources, so she will be exposed to opposing views on things and has to make up her own mind about where the truth lies. You can handle her "converting" efforts by either agreeing with her and her reasons or saying that you don't find her views convincing for reasons a,b and c. After that she will know the issues aren't worth discussing further until some new "evidence" is presented by either side or she will leave the issue be, since it doesn't really matter what you believe. She could have just wanted to tell her own view on things and learn how you thought about them. That happens all the time.
I know this nice well educated girl who doesn't believe humans have ever been to the moon and that the moon landings have been faked. Her reasons for believing it are unsuprisingly a bit vague, but basicly she believes if it had actually happened so long ago, going there would be a relatively constant thing by now and we would also have gone to other planets already.
I've told her the reasons why we launch robots and probes to explore space instead of putting more people on the moon, and why sending people to other planets isn't quite as easy as putting them on the moon, but it doesn't matter to her in the slightest. It lead to a few discussions about the issue where we voiced our views and discussed about the reasoning behind them and then we were done with it and the issue hasn't been brought up since in our discussions. So unless your sister advocates direct violence against other human beings, I don't see any problem with what you're saying.

You don't see a problem with a member of your family existing in a constant state of paranoia and fear because she believes in the ridiculous conspiracies promoted by 'news' organisations like Fox? If my sister believed that we were controlled by chemicals in our food I'd be worried too.

Edited by: Sader Rykane on 07/05/2011 22:05:07 Al Jazeera in many cases is actually fairly reputable, I haven't read anything ridiculously outlandish on it anyway, at least not to the level of Fox News.

You confess that you refuse to watch any news or media source, but then you criticize your sister for staying informed in some modest amount? Not sure who to side with here.
Despite her "outlandish" opinions on whatever you two were discussing, at least she's pulling information from multiple sources. Something many kids of the young generation are unable to do, much less stay informed via a single source of information that wasn't spoon fed to them by Jon Stuart or Colbert.
The people who blindly watch Zeitgeist or anything similar are even more annoying than those devoted to watching just Fox News.
I consider myself a somewhat frequent viewer of Fox News, but mainly the news shows themselves and not Beck, O'Reilly or the others, and I rarely see news stories about conspiracies and such either. Who knows though. I'd just change the channel if I did though.

Edited by: Jada Maroo on 07/05/2011 23:01:53 Fox News is a great network - if not for Fox, President Obama would still be keeping company with the likes of Jeremiah Wright, Van Jones, Bill Ayers, and a host of other radicals and communists he's surrounded himself with throughout his politcal life. And it's doubtful you'd have heard much of anything about those people if not for the work of Fox (although, Hillary Clinton tried during her campaign, to her credit!). Also, you'd have heard nothing at all about Eric Holder's refusal to prosecute the Black Panthers for voter intimidation because the victims were white.
Now, if your sister watched MSNBC, or got most of her news from the Daily Show, then you'd have something to worry about.

You know what my biggest problem with Glenn Beck is? He's capable of being a lot more entertaining than he is on his show. And this is a big reason why they didn't renew his contract. You can only stand in front of a chalk board with arrows and circles around the word "SOCIALIST" for so long before viewers start losing interest. Doesn't matter if what he's saying is true - and quite a lot of it is - it has become repetitive. That doesn't make for good TV.

Indeed. I have not turned my TV at home one for over two years. Internet ftw, were you can get some proper news, and also watch shows you like, when you like. Emergent news sites and communites beats the old static ways of the TV, were you get spoon fed stuff big companies and governments wants you to, and also ads getting stuffed down your throats every 20-30 min.
