You guys/gals are fantastic. Thank you so much! While I've seen many of your suggestions already, there are so many more I haven't seen including Firefly, which I've been meaning to get a hold of. Thanks again! <3 you guys!

Total Recall is a great action sci-fi movie that is engrossing where many other action scifi films are not.

Oh yeah ... there's like several versions of Solaris. A new one with like George Clooney - which I've not seen and an older one which I have. Apparently a TV movie too ...

The original is French, right? I've only seen the Clooney version, and I honestly liked it. It's very slow, plodding...makes you take in and notice every detail in every scene. It kinda reminds me of a cross between Moon and Sunrise...melancholy but beautiful. Really enjoyed the dialogue too.

After putting it off for months, I finally watched the first Firefly episode and I'm completely confused about why they only made one season. All the crappy incarnations of Star Trek and BSG go on for years, and one of the best and most original series to come along in a long, long time gets shut down. Figures.
I do, however, like the captain in his new series, Castle.

Wheedon was known for challenging himself with series titles and concepts that caused his efforts problems.
"Buffy The Vampire Slayer" was titled to sound silly - then made into a terrible movie that wasted the talents of it's actors (the director didn't want children to find the vampires scary ...) before finally succeeding under Whedon's own hand and with SMG as Buffy. Of course then - once he was successful - he had to go and ruin it by inserting is personal politics into the show ... and viewership steadily declined ...
Firefly was not merely Cowboys in Space - it was the American Post Civil War South (without the slavery issues) in space. Not the kind of thing that made the TV exec's comfortable or which most of the public even got. It had other problems too ... as the science behind it all was sort of vague.
Whedon was really good at manipulating the audiences emotions but he didn't have a very firm grasp of technology, government or the military so when his efforts strayed away from fantasy - where he could just make everything up - they suffered.
For a viewing public that wants formulaic sitcoms's like Seinfeld, Friends and Three and a Half Men, etc., etc., his success in making cult favorites ... wasn't profitable - enough.
It's like Freaks & Geeks. The one and only TV show I've ever seen that gave a realistic depiction of 70's teenagers and ********* - (which BTW killed the series as after that episode it never aired an episode again).
Of course - the same could pretty much be said for any Sci Fi series. They may well have some success in theaters and on cable but ... they don't last on Network TV. In that respect, ST:TOS - actually did fairly well to get 3 seasons.
*shrug*
Main stream TV doesn't want people to think. If they were thinking - they might resent having their thoughts disturbed by the blaring sound of the commercials audio track, mute the sound and continue on with their thoughts undisturbed until the show came back. After all - The Commercials - is why the show is there.

There are also several post apocalyptic scenarios being made over the years the one I particularly like is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053137/ (1959 version) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0219224/ (2000 version). The ending is actually quite brutal when you think about it.
The original had super stars of their time (Gregory Beck and Fred Astaire and Ava Gardner) in lead roles.

I will throw it out but it is not a true sci-fi, but I always loved it (the original) and it definately had the sci-fi feel as it involved an alien contamination.

The late 80's and early 90's had some really great sci-fi B-movies. Most were just really entertaining more than they were serious. A lot of these below are B- and C- movies, for the most part they wernt that bad.
Ice Pirates - my favorite classic from that era. "Jason, my hand! Dont forget my hand!", and "The ship has...space herpes" This is a must see. This movie absolutely doesnt take itself seriously, which is what makes it great.
This is a B-sci-fi comedy classic.

Edited by: Vogue on 11/05/2011 18:39:51 The original BSG was nerfed by CBS and turned it into a glib per episode action scifi series. The new BSG was awesome as it had many over arching serious plot lines including per episode plot specials. And many of the serious plot lines were not resolved totally but left as philosophical questions which was cute.
A lot of people did not like the new BSG as it had a dark edge but for me that is what made it more credible.
The new BSG was like the original Star Trek - It took current geo political issues and tackled them. Star Trek TNG was a platform for 80's American liberal politics with added weaksauce. Enterprise was good at as it embraced gusty American new frontier adventurism.

Here's a few movies and shows I enjoyed : Cypher Outland Robocop 1&2 (but for God's sake, stay away from robocop 3 and the tv-series) Troll Hunter (more fantasy than scifi, but quite entertaining) Futurama Twin Peaks (again, not really scifi, but they do pick up a signal from another star in one episode) The Hidden I come in peace Hardware (very dark dystopian cyberpunk) The Cube Quatermass and the Pit Torchwood (esp. the last season - Children of Earth) Impostor
And some that I haven't seen yet : Another Heaven (japanese) The Borrower (If anyone knows where I can get my hands on this one - do tell, my YARR is stuck on 92.4%) Cargo (Swiss movie) Open your eyes (remade as Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise) Total Recall 2070 (HBO series - supposedly much closer to Philip K. ****'s vision than the movie).

In a similar vein to Sunshine and Event Horizon, I'm going to +1 Pandorum, which someone else mentioned on the previous page. It's not a sci-fi masterpiece, but I found it pretty enjoyable.
The premise is similar to Event Horizon: crew members wake up after a long hibernation period inside a massive spaceship, and they figure something has gone very wrong while they were asleep, spending the rest of the movie trying to figure out exactly what happened... and that's all you should know about it, any further information would be spoiling the plot.
I did find the spastic camera work and hectic editing annoying, but that's a given these days.
Like Event Horizon, it's a blend of sci-fi and horror, taking place inside a mysterious spaceship, though overall I found Event Horizon to be the better movie. Speaking of which, I watched it with the commentary on, and it's a pity to hear how much more it could've been according to the director's original vision - but he had to cut down on it following studio / MMPA demands to make it less gruesome and more palatable to mainstream audiences.
He meant the Hell scenes to go on for longer, and on the commentary he invites the viewer to pause them and watch it frame by frame, as there is a lot of funky stuff going on there in the background that you won't notice in the final cut, as they pass by way too fast. And funky stuff is to be seen there indeed if you do that.
It's too bad they don't make more movies like Moon nowadays, which I enjoyed as a very nice throwback to those old-school sci-fi movies they used to make, where things happen slowly and quietly, drawing you in with their special mood and atmosphere. Piece of trivia I recently found out about Moon: the director is actually David Bowie's son.

I am American and I love red dwarf. I grew up watching British comedy on public broadcasting so maybe early exposure to English humor is why.
Space Above and Beyond was a short lived but well produced 'WW2 in space show.' It had some pretty edgy anti establishment themes which is probably what got it axed. I love the ending, they don't make any attempts to glorify or sugarcoat warfare.

Pfft. Still no reference to Star Cops. Given those were made in the late 80s, the themes presented have aged reasonably well.
While the old Dune has its charm, I'm also partial to the two mini-series that Sci-Fi did. Like BSG, you have to step back and consider it anew (compare to the books, not the older movie).
Missing 2001 and 2010. Sheesh. Also disappointed that a Rama movie never took off (yet).
