I was wondering if some of you could point me in the direction of some really, really good sci-fi movies/series.
I'm not a fan of Star Trek or Battlestar Gallactica...well, not a huge fan at least. I'll watch it if there's nothing else on. I'm talking more about the darker, more edgy sci-fi flicks.
I've already seen Sunshine, Solaris, Moon, 2001 and all its incarnations, all the Alien franchise of course, Event Horizon, and all the major darker-type sci-fi flicks. Are there any in the same vein as the aforementioned that you would recommend?
That includes all the standard Hollywood sci-fi BS as well, although Starship Troopers is entertaining, as silly as it is.

I thought 'District 9' was excellent, and I'd recommend Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil' and '12 Monkeys', though these veer away from your list a bit.

Fair warning this list could become quite long as I remember movies and add comments
Not all of this films are probably as dark as you'd like, but they are all at least somewhat decent (no * = ok, * = good, ** = great *** = excellent). dw I have only rated the truly quality movies as ** or above. The * movies are pretty good nonetheless.
12 Monkeys -- **
Babylon A.D. -- *
Equilibrium -- ** -- (GUN KATA :D:D:D - post-post apocalyptic setting, humans have stripped themselves of emotion in order to prevent wars, murder etc)
Splice -- *** -- (dark, dark dark, or at the very least morally reprehensible. Also features a legitimate 'abomination unto god'. You need to watch this right now)

Children of Men -- ** -- (darrrrk)
Dawn Of The Dead -- *
Dead Space Downfall -- (never played the game, found this quite entertaining. animated and some of the voice actors don't 'suit' unfortunately)

The distinct lack of Sci-Fi series disturbs me 
So let's remedy that problem 
* Firefly (+ Serenity afterwards, just in case you're still hankering for movies)
* Babylon 5 - "epic story arcs are epic", and it aged decently (not great, but decently)
* all the Star Treks, but IN PARTICULAR Deep Space Nine - starts out really slow and almost static, but gets some serious depth quite fast because of it, and is therefore my fav. ST of all (TNG is a relatively close second)
* the Stargates series, but mostly the first one, and in particular the first 5 or 6 seasons
* Farscape - a bit "odd" at first (and weird near the end), relatively cheap-looking, but usually worth the watch for most episodes
* Andromeda - takes a while to get used to, but it grows on you -- but only the first 3 seasons or so, season 4 is a bit wishy-washy, and season 5 is horrible
* The Other Limits - wohoo !!!
* Earth - Final Conflict (but not so much the last season)
* Masters of Science Fiction (only 6 episodes exist)
* Defying Gravity (only one season exists, depends on taste)
* Space: Above and Beyond (two seasons, again, depends on taste, I liked it)
* SeaQuest DSV (season 3 got cut mid-way)
Then you have a host of series that at least occasionally veer off from Sci-Fi into fantasy and/or back again
* Doctor Who
* Fringe
* The X-Files (depending on taste)
* Sliders (hey, I loved it)
* The 4400 (ended kind of abruptly)
* Eureka
* Warehouse 13 (with a grain of salt)
* Heroes (with several grains of salt)
* The Middleman (very short-lived)
* Charlie Jade (again, just one season)
* Flash Forward (just one season yet again)
...and this is if you limit yourself to JUST "live-action" TV series, because there's a HOST of animated content (and I don't mean just anime) that can easily go toe to toe with some of the above.

Space Above and Beyond.
Ran for one season and left the whole damn story arc up for wonder. Fox just freaking fails when they cancel these good shows.
Anyhow, I recommend it, I will also state with zero apologies that Caprica sucks. Worst Science Fiction show ever, next to Sanctuary...

I'll Chime in and Recommend most of Akita T's list (don't know all the series, but those I do recognise were indeed rather good) and add another of my own.
* The Burning Zone
Set in our time (late 90s I believe), it follows a more adventurous variant of the NCID (National Centre for Infectious Diseases) while they handle some rather unusual biohazard situations and try to prevent an organisation called "The Dawn" from wiping out the human race. Weirdness abound including Sentient viruses and all that goodness.
It only ran for a single season, with 19 episodes in total (that includes the pilot).
I've only ever found 1 place where they actually have this series on DVD unfortunately the pricetag is a bit silly because of that.
Haven't been able to find it anywhere through "less than legal" methods.
If anyone does, please send me a link too, because I really want to watch it again.

Just finding it in a public place should not have been a problem (you don't even need anything except google to get quite a few hits), but waiting days or weeks for public tracker seeds to come online long enough on a very slow rotation can get boring. The alternative would be private trackers, assuming you can get an account to any of them.

Wow, some fantastic suggestions here - should keep you busy for a while!
I'm going to add Primer, which is a super low budget time travel movie and actually very good, so long as you're aware that two of the characters who appear in the first five minutes are basically going to disappear for the rest of the film. And now you are.

Seconding babylon5. Not much else comes close in terms of story telling and character development.
Lexx is pretty cool show too. It's really low budget and trashy but makes up for it with tons of black humour and ****.

Babylon 5 has excellent character development. Particularly the the juxtaposition of G'Kar and Londo Mollari. Both leaders of their people. G'Kar is struck by the plight of the Narn and Londo is struck by the majesty->rightousness of the Centauri. Both together witness the follies of empires rise and fall. The old to ashes and the new from ashes. Twice the pride double the fall. They have walked different paths and through common experience in the end they walk the same path. It's typical pedagogy progressive fiction - strategies of instruction and learning which we aspire to in fictional lore but in reality it is much harder as individuals by climbing the greasy pole to aquire power are bound by conflicting political loyalties and obligations to maintain a power base

Blade Runner - Definitely fits the dark and gritty.
Dune - The 1984 movie.
Pandorum - I picked it up out of the discount bin and was surprised how much I liked it. Almost more of a space monster movie. Waking up from hyper-sleep just to be disemboweled and eaten alive...well its just awesome.
Chronicles of riddick - Stylized art direction, and great action story.
Pitch Black - Very dark, not even sure if you could call it an anti-hero movie.
Hunter Prey - Found this on Netflix last night. B-movie for sure, great costume makeup, and not 1/2 bad acting, story and dialog. The ending really left me wanting more, and not in the bad way.
Babylon 5:In the Beginning - This made for TV movie is what got me into watching Babylon 5. I'd say this is one of the best space-battle TV movies ever made.
Space: Above and Beyond - Came out about the same time a Bab-5. While Bab-5 had almost a Star-trekie vibe, S:AaB was very gritty, low-tech, had way better writing and characters in my opinion. But like any "new" series you have to make it thru the first 5-6 episodes before it really finds its mojo. Its low budget makes the special effects look campy, but its a great series non the less.
The late 80's and early 90's had some really great sci-fi B-movies. Most were just really entertaining more than they were serious.
A lot of these below are B- and C- movies, for the most part they wernt that bad.
Ice Pirates - my favorite classic from that era. "Jason, my hand! Dont forget my hand!", and "The ship has...space herpes" This is a must see. This movie absolutely doesnt take itself seriously, which is what makes it great.
Enemy Mine - meh, didnt age that well. But I liked it back then.
Battle Beyond the Stars - very early 80's, only reason I remember it is the ship looked like it had knockers.
Screamers - also a meh movie, was okay the 1st time. I'll watch it every 5 years or so.
Spacehunter 'something' Forbidden Area - Had that sexy ginger, Molly Ringwald as a runaway (or was it stowaway).
Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn - was such a bad movie I liked it.
I could throw out a lot more, just to throw them out. But in my opinion these are worth watching (at least once), and are keeping with the sci-fi spacy feel.

Well, you can find quite a few versions on Amazon, but the price tag is a bit yucky (around 187$ for the cheapest complete collection I could see there - Linkage), almost all others listed as used (quite a few partial collections or even just pairs of episodes there), and the ones that are supposedly listed as new probably aren't really new either.
Frankly, I'd rather download it from the net.
If you want to be as honest as possible and you feel like you really want to pay somebody for it, get it from Netflix (but that would be a "rental", not a purchase).

Roughnecks:Starship Troopers Chronicles
It's a CGI cartoon form 1999, The first campaign on pluto has horrendous graphics, but it gets better.
It is orders of magnitude more awesome then all of the movies combined.
For starters there is evidence that the military has more than 3 functional brain cells.
And the bugs are smarter too.
For example, they have plasma bugs that are being used as field artillery.
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Sliders was an awesome concept that yet again Network execs ruined.(I honestly did not like the whole Kromagg story arc that took over the more what if aspects the show started with)
Ok but to acquire many of these shows will likely require resorting to Either Netflix(if in the US) or to Yarrrrr via torrents since your hopes of finding new DVDs is slim for some.
