CCP is doing nothing to PLEX prices in game. PLEX is 100% controlled by the players.
What they are doing is not a scam in any sense of the word.

Quote:
With a growing PLEX market (PLEX is the item with the highest trade value on the EVE market on any given day) and its function of facilitating the exchange of game time for ISK, players have become concerned about PLEX prices. PLEX is sold on an open market in a free exchange between players, just like most other items in EVE Online. Our core design principle of being hands-off from these markets also applies to the PLEX market. However, due to its complex function and potential impact on the velocity of money supply, the Central Bank might intervene in the PLEX market in order to curb inflation or avoid sudden deflation in the EVE economy. All such action would not be announced beforehand and only limited information would become public in the quarter after actions have been taken. These actions would aim at stabilization of the PLEX market and do not have a specific price target for PLEX or a specific inflation target for prices in EVE.

How do you know? Do you realize that - hypothetically - every time CCP buys and destroys a PLEX in-game, they get a $17.50 profit?

yes if I pay 20$ to buy one of my own paintings, and then burn it, I made 20$ profit.

You're naive, right? The price of plex is the exclusive domain of CCP outside of the game. Inside the game, CCP's control is not exclusive but, nearly so. They only need to destroy, publicly, lots of plex to manipulate the market regardless if CCP admits to doing it or via a player account. Lets not forget they have the run of the game and can manufacture whatever circumstance they want. The only time plex price in game is 100% player controlled is when CCP is not manipulating it.
CCP's constant "plex for whatever they feel like" is another manipulation of ingame price. Or haven't you realized that?

What about trashing it?
If you are stupid enough to hit trash, instead of the much more obvious choice of "apply game time" then you deserve to lose your PLEX. Any other insightful comments you wish to add?

This is even more stupid when its a known fact that a PLEX can be applied from any location in EVE. The guy moving those PLEX had absolutely no reason to do so.

You seem to miss the whole point.
If a CCP employee buys a plex in game and destroys it instead of using it for gametime, CCP earns an amount of money worth 1 month of gametime, say $15. After all, somewhere someone doesn't use it instead of subscription. As CCP can create ISK at will this could get them a lot of money and it also increases the plex prices.
Just a conspiracy theory I know, but CCP could get get some extra income this way.

Here is something else for you "plex is 100% player driven" believers.
CCP has a motivation to increase ingame price of plex to outcompete with RMT. What better way to do it than the confiscate RMTer's plexes and then "donate" them to a charitable cause presumably to 1) lower their liability and 2) to earn charitable contribution credits?

All that does is price a real subscriber out of the market and cost them any following months that player may have played

People convert GTC to plex in order to sell them. They are buying an in-game item. Once someone has purchased a plex for ISK, the seller has in effect reached his/her end goal of converting cash to ISK.
If the buyer of the plex then proceeds to:-
A. Trash the plex. B. Lose the plex after being blown up in space. C. Get it destroyed in any other manner. Then all that is destroyed is an in-game item and all that is lost is ISK. But if we knew of said loss, we would all laugh and point.
If the person who had converted the GTC to a plex, had some sort of mental break down and did A to C. Again if we knew of said loss, we would all laugh and point.

Hey, captain daftpants, what happens when the PLEX price gets too high? Oh thats right, people stop buying them, then what happens? Oh yeah, thats right people stop converting GTC to PLEX. Then what happens? Oh yeah, they go back back to RMT for their ISK.
Try harder next time, your argument was poorly thought out.

Whatever you say.
I hope you do realize that the whole plex mechanic opens up the opportunity for a company to earn thousands extra $ a month, completely unnoticed. Which is a disturbing thought in itself.

Fixed.
Why do they care what happens after the PLEX is purchased? They've got their money then.
If CCP cares about anything, it's the rate at which PLEX are purchased. The irony is, CCP buying PLEX is healthy for the economy as it counters inflation and makes the ISK traded for PLEX worth more.

Some people in this thread are tin-foil-pants on head ******ed. A hypothetical CCP account destroying plex bought in game earns them no more than a std player buying plex and applying it to his account. The key difference ofc being that the CCP account would be using spawned ISK, injecting ISK directly into the economy, and therefore the last thing CCP would want to be doing.
A far more believable conspiracy theory is that CCP tracks the location of every plex in game, then instamove DEVs in alpha BS to suicide gank those ships carrying dozens of plex.
