I've read several threads about cockpit and bridge views. I understand the real problems of trying to have joysticks used and fluid movement implemented. What if we had a bridge/cockpit view that wasn't all integrated with flashy parts of the UI...just a view out of some windows looking over the bow of your ship into space and the current UI overlay was there as it is normaly. You could maybe pan up/down, left/right 120*. I would like this view to "set the mood" from time to time...say when I am traveling system to system.
This view is by far, not the best option for combat. During combat you simply switch over to your tactical orbit view and procede with the battle.
In some of the threads I read peoples remarks saying it would be to much to render when in reality it would seriously take a bite out of your GPU's work load. Imagine your in a fleet of 30 ships, in orbit cam view your gpu is rendering all of them (depending the LOD due to your zoom range). In cockpit view, depending on where you are situated in the fleet you may see considerablly less, there fore the gpus work is less.
I understand the EVE Lore and the orbiting cameras....so why wouldnt a pilot be allowed to put a camera on the bridge of his own ship if he/she so desired?
Implementing it this way would add to the experience should any player want to use it.....doesnt add any new FTW options or 3D vr scenes blah blah....Just simple, clean and something to enjoy and easily switched in and out of.

I like it. I have always thought EVE lacked something from a third person view. I think it would greatly enrich the game experience of players to be up on the bridge of your ship givig the orders. It would make people feel mor like they're reely in charge of their ship.

CCP can't (and won't) do it due to the game mechanics. Twitch based combat is viable for single or small multiplayer games mostly due to the amount of traffic it produces.
To make it work in this game CCP has to buy\create a server way above what they currently have. (millions of dollars here)
AND They would have to remake the entire game engine to fit that (another set of millions of dollars)
Answer this - do you really think CCP should sacrifice so much money to benefit players with joysticks? (keyboard and mouse are absolutely horrible for full 3D movements)

Edited by: Zakua Sabot on 13/05/2011 16:41:45 Eidric, Did you read anything I posted? I am not for Joystick mania in EVE at all, I know what a hellish issue that would be.
Theres no new servers required for this....your reply is a-typical to the many other threads I read on the subject. This idea doesn't introduce twitch based combat or demand a new game engine lol.
You'd still click in the direction you wanted to go but now your view in cockpit view would not be 3d 360* it would be what ever you could see out of the cockpit/bridge window. The current UI is still the top layer on your screen...nothings changed as far as navigation, or any other CaC components.
This is not a joystick thread...I have flight sims for that crap...

frankly if the bridge of your heavily armoured combat ship has windows, you're doing something wrong.

Easy solution:
Make the inside of the ship transparent and move the camera to the inside of the ship (and have it face the direction that the front of the ship is facing) Having trouble debating? Just go with the side that pays you more for your work. |

Edited by: Esiel on 13/05/2011 17:42:36 Sorry but this is highly highly unlikely. They have made the Pod a very important part of the lore of eve. I seriously doubt they are willing to just chuck that lore.
Besides, I like the way I can view the entire battlefield by zooming out. Or center on an enemy ship and see what is going on with them.
edit: I am replying to the title of your thread.

Esiel. Yes the POD is very important to the lore of eve but even now the game is evolving away from goo guys in capsules 24/7/365 with the CQ and Incarna planned expansions.
The capsule is a mechanism for the human pilot to augment his/her combat capability...a force multiplier if you will. While in ship you are still in your capsule but now you have a VIEW from the bridge/cockpit of the ship u pilot.
You would still be able to view the entire battlefield or zoom in and out of various objects/enemies at will. This idea of a cockpit would simply ADD a optional view for you to switch in and out of.
The whole idea is realy ment to place your now identifiable character into the vessels you pilot as a first person experience as opposed to seeing it from the 3rd person. Live as your toon and not as a ship, pilot your ship and feel as though you are doing so

Why you don't have a cockpit or bridge? Because you are burried alive floating in liquid in a pod connected with neural links to the onboard systems and having access to the outside view through a camera drone. See The Jovian Wetgrave and Camera Drones Sorry I was too lazy to read through the whole thread.

Edited by: Zakuak on 13/05/2011 19:03:00 Yes I have read both of those articles. I am in tune with the pilots surroundings and know we are in pods.
Their would be no viewing of your toon walking about the bridge and you wouldnt see the tops of your hands and knees in the cockpit...this is another camera just like the ones they put on the drones...however this ones placed in what USED to be the control bridge/cockpit of the ship...you are still in your pod....
There that works with the lore..its my ship and I wana put a camera in the bridge...I can fit my ships with 100mil isk parts...cant I put a cam in the old bridge location? *lil scarcasm for fun*

The "bridge" in an EVE ship does not exist (not for pod ships anyway). The capsule is deep within the ship to keep it safe during combat.
The pod itself does not actually have any window.
The windows on ships are leftovers from the origin of the hull. Most ships have non pod pilot counterparts (so far, only tier 2 BC, tier 3 BS, and T3s do not have non pod versions observable). They also are for the benefit of the crews.
Its also likely that if there are bridges in any form on the pod capable ships, that there isn't a window. You would never see a window for the true bridge of a semi-realistic combat ship (A-wing in RotJ shows why).

Don't get me wrong, I like your idea and I'm hugely glad you're not another dolt who doesn't understand why things are the way things are.
However, it seems incongruous for the pod pilot, who will always be in the pod to want to see a view of the battlefield as if he were standing on the bridge.
I can understand why you might since it's common in our sci-fi culture.
However, at least from a RP/Lore POV the pod pilot wouldn't ever experience this view since he never stands on the bridge...ever...and it'd be odd for the pod pilot, master of the galaxy, to want ever to limit his view of the battlefield, even when travelling. You know, just in case...
That's the objection I have. And though I'm not an RPer and would probably (occasionally) enjoy it personally, I know my pod pilot would be thinking 'wtf is my camera drone doing stuck to that window...'

As a pod pilot we are pretty much supposed to have simultaneous awareness of every crevices of our ship through the security on board the ship, so we should be able to look through them rather than our camera drones, should we will to do so.
CCp could also populate our ship with npc crew, for atmosphere.
This view could be the start of implementation of hiring/slaving a crew for your ship |

Some good points.
I still stand with the idea. I do not think it would ruin RP/lore for anyone, if they do not like the view then simply dont switch to it....for others...heck, others could completely RP their way out of a capsule if they so desired. walking in stations, bridge view.
It would be implemented as a camera view from the ships bridge. The idea would be clear that it was not a humans eye view of the vessel. I for some reason really want to fly my ship around like this, like I am IN IT and in commmand of it. I understand the LORE and the actual mechanics...im just stubborn lol..

Edited by: Katrina Cortez on 17/05/2011 00:54:51 Even in Star Trek online where they do have bridges, usable crew members and walking in stations, they dont have bridge combat... there is a reason for it. A view screen is too limiting.

Well, yes this game all about being in the pod. In fact, modern sci-fi has inertia damper.
For me seems pod is more suitable for less evolved civilisations. More evolved civilisations should use inertia damper instead liquid in the pod.
For CCP it would very big step forward. Frankly, I am uncertain whether the CCP capable of such a progressive step.
It is just too damn big...

Just saying.

@ people saying it will ruin the lore
There is some mention of small crews on larger ships. Take a look at this diagram of the Hurricane. It has a crew of 1000 men + the pod.

So the first person view can simply the view of a crew member. Simple as that.

Why would you be able to see what a crew member sees? you aren't a crew member, you're a capsuleer.

I'm sure CCP can work in an rp reason. Maybe instead of crew members the pod pilots can see the security cameras in the ship?

If CCP did this and desired a RP reasoning, they could take on the concept of the ship-avatar system that was used in the SF show Andromeda. It's a nice idea; the ship (in EVE's case, the pod pilot) has an Avatar through which they can interact with other people, get about the physically and such.
This'd also allow for Incarna to give players the ability to simultaneously wander around their ship/bridge and properly play THE GAME in the classic EVE style.
Or sommat. --

Edited by: Avrien on 18/05/2011 02:08:09 Edited by: Avrien on 18/05/2011 02:05:47 I don't think first person would be a bad idea. You could use it for alligning fleets for stuff. Movies or for fun. You could also do advanced first person setups and allow better controls from a joystick(or atleast as default) for some functions you normally have to click to use, saving time. they could put it in and see if anyone finds more ideas or if there is a use later. it could be nice to have. Just make it a zoom in options. Or a two button option easily done on a joystick. The rotation could still be done Kind of like flying in other first person but without changing the game structure. Just utilizing it better.
It would just add another view which can always be useful even if it less of a view(via your criteria). It could also have ship like Interfaces or something more practical lets say. Traveling in tight spots for instance. No matter what there will be more than you can think. Especially if you can't think of any.
It could easily use the joystick to use current controls to fly like first person in what would still be a more select and shoot setups like WOW. Since that is what EVE is when you come down to it. Just different defaults. Basically zoom in for full first person like defaults and fly in a more automated sense changing angles via ships current agility etc. It would be easy to implement per say. And fun if you think about it(I mean it could be done without changing anything except tieing in stuff to different current options etc and using the directions to change vectors plus the mini one and other buttons for a lot of flight versatility under the current game design..)
Would that simply replace the keyboard with a joystick?! you could use the joystick for moving and the mouse for partial menu selection. Does'nt even need to be in the hull. It could be on the nose. Or on the sides. You could rotate from nodes on the ship based on the design. It would be cool.

It has always amazed me how people who don't want change, always say "It cannot be done, they won't do it, yada yada yada".
Yes it can be done, whether or not they will do it, is another matter entirely.
First person view from inside the ship ala a "view screen" removes the issue of windows. What's to say the pod pilot cannot buy an implant or augmentation that allows such a view. Something to give those who want it, a different view of the solar system.
This IS Science Fiction after all and anything IS possible if CCP will listen to some of the suggestions made.

Textures are all one sided as far as I know, making the model invisible from the inside except for planes and corners that intersect, and diagonally cross your path on the outside of the ship. That's been my experience anyway. There is also a way of making a window texture, which allows you to look in to a model.
