Dear space tribe,
I'm curious to hear from those of you who have gone above and beyond and contributed something to the community outside of just playing EVE. It could be that you run a blog, make songs, report on events, host player gatherings, make tutorials, create videos, run a fan site or create programs and apps to help your fellow pilots enjoy EVE. This is by no means a definitive list of community contributions, only some examples.
What I'm interested to know is how making those contributions has affected you as an EVE player and/or how it's affected your life beyond the game and the community. What have you learned, what skills have you discovered that you didn't know you had, what doors have been opened etc etc.

As for going above and beyond, I don't know about that. I think it's more about the little things that everyone contributes. Me personally I wrote a how-to guide on starting your own corporation, my car has an EVE lettering bumper sticker, and I'll wear my red Minmatar t-shirt out in public from time to time (depending on laundry cycle). Looks great with my red Reebox shoes.
I'll freely admit however that ive been bored with the game as of late and have been playing TSW. All this emphasis on sov, nullsec and faction warfare just isn't interesting or compelling. I don't hate it (though I do hate nullsec alliance internal policies and politics), it's just not gripping. I'm in a state of non grippness.
So yeah, just my two cents. Btw if World of Darkness is anything like TSW, its going to be freaking amazing. |

For EVE? I don't know if I've done that much. Back when we had the Sansha Live events I would be up all hours of the day leading fleets consisting of the general public against Sansha where ever they popped up.
But my biggest achievement? Easily everything I've done for DUST 514. As an EVE player, it hasn't really done anything. But as a DUST player, I guess there are a fairly decent number of people that know me and my work, through the podcast CAST 514 and either DUST514base or DUST514.org. In the past, I was possibly considered the best source of information on DUST 514 available to the public. I even managed to get the name "Mr. Extrapolation" from CCP Praetorian (creative director on DUST 514) after taking bits and pieces and extrapolating gameplay, features and everything else to do with the game from single frames (yes, I seriously stayed up late at night going frame by frame to try and get everything I could). I must admit, I quite like the name.
But was it worth it? Absolutely. Even if I have managed to completely destroy any semblance of a sleeping habit I may have once possessed (which I partly blame on living on the other side of the world). The moment I actually met the DUST developers at Fanfest this year, I knew I had made an impact of some kind. I guess it's shown that I can actually write (in some weird convoluted fashion I admit, but it works).
As for the opportunities? Well, where do I start... http://www.dust514.org - the unofficial forum for everything DUST 514 http://www.dust514base.com - the blog site with everything else DUST 514 you need

Ive tried to figure out why there is such a difference between the group of players that enjoy PvP combat and those that do not. What I found (its whether or not you get The Rush) indicates the two groups will forever have different play styles, and trying to get one group to enjoy the others activities is doomed to fail. The best we can to is get everyone to understand and accept the situation. And by "everyone" I include Game Designers.
How has it affected me? Not too much actually. It helped me understand me and my reactions, and helped guide my finding activities in game I enjoy. My explanation seems to be well received by many, disputed by some.
Oh, and I helped with the AJ project to set up Site One. If you fly there you can even get a research abstract I wrote. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

About 3 years ago i was in college going for what would be equivalent to Bachelors in US. I had all this experience in my field yet could not find any work as a programmer as every company i applied to said we are looking for someone with at least 100 projects behind them.
I knew more than few programming languages and had a lot experience on the field web, mobile and desktop applications yet no portfolio == no job. I always need ISK so it was at that time that i started offering services for ISK ( not sexual ) but programming for ISK and i landed quite a few projects and few months later i was able to fill my portfolio.
I scored a job in one of the bigger software developer firms in my country and worked there for a year until i graduated. I then quit my job as i wanted to go for my Masters and this is where i am now my second year of my second college going for my masters.
However my portfolio that came mostly from eve sourced projects landed me a job that would pay for my living expanses for over a year, buy me a new PC and allowed me to completely renovate my apartment from ground ( pipes ) up.
I still offer programing for ISK and my last contribution to eve community is this:
http://gotttogankemall.netau.net/ A application that will take a COPY-PASTE of your ingame ship cargo or fitting scan and give you a total price for everything. Tool mainly meant for highsec suicide gankers. The prices are pulled via API so you know exactly how much your target is worth.
However as of tomorrow you will also be able to paste in D-SCAN results ( 'sort of FC to Scout tool' ) you will be able to COPY-PASTE in content of your D-SCAN and it will filter out and organize the result for easy and readable display for your FC so he will know what he is up to.
Along side that feature tomorrow i will also add ability to paste in Contract contents and Inventory items.

I also developed a good understanding of english due to eve, which directly fed back in to learning CS theory and other things as well.
My life would almost certainly be much different without eve. |

My Alliance (mostly me) have been writing a blog for about 2 years now. It seems to get moderate traffic, however a lot of it comes from South East Asian, where I'm assuming people were Googling for recipes for General Tso's Chicken and found my horribly offensive blog instead.
I'm not sure how it's affected me, I think I've expanded my vocabulary that deals with despising my own Alliance, and describing failure on a massive scale (again, of my Alliance).
It's a fun outlet and turns out to be an awesome reference to document the rich history of my Alliance (3 and a half years old, w00t w00t) We have a blog, it is terrible. How to fix Bounty Hunting |

Writing my fitter has actually made me very bitter about CCP. Everything related to third party developement is very poorly documented.
It's pretty clear CCP doesn't care about third party developers very much. It's nice to have access to the SDE, but it has multiple severe inconsistencies (example), also it comes without any kind of documentation about its structure.
Just like the wiki page about the DNA format (which is outright wrong on every aspect). Just like the install links for API keys. Just like how they keep fiddling with the typenames without telling anybody (link).
Also, it's been months since the last update about CREST.

How is Stensson's kung fu? I haven't seen him for a while. Which is nice; heavy-handed moderation seems to be less of a thing nowadays, although there is some. I'd still like to see change as to the ISDs being seen more as people in the community than lockmachines on the forum though. I was at a party once, and found myself being discussed by another Eve player who didn't know I was right there. It was pretty flattering once I introduced myself.
As for how Eve has affected me? Well... not in the best of ways. For one, it has made me pretty distrustful of other people. I'm always suspicious of others having an angle in everything they do. It has also made me depressed at times, mostly due to the realization that my lifespan is insufficient to see my dreams come true - but then, all visions of the future/sci-fi do that to me eventually, and depression is a friend I've had long before I came to Eve.
It's also made me greedy. I'd rather "not work" than "work for low pay." I've developed a view of working for someone as a sucker's bet. Someone is always making more money off you, than you're making with your own effort. It feels like slavery, or a parasitic condition. Drives me nuts.
I have made friends in Eve, some of whom are my longest-known friends, so I guess it's not all negative. |

I haven't really contributed much (a sometimes-EVE blog, and that one VFK thing), but I think it has affected me.
Running the blog has made me realise that there are indeed people who like discussing EVE maturely and sensibly, and are also willing to listen to me. Running the VFK thing (Operation Dread Intrusion) has clued me in to the fact that despite all the forum rabble-rousing that goes on, almost none of the "daring" capsuleers of New Eden can be bothered to actually undock a warship and go make a difference.
So overall, I think contributing has made me a bit more cynical, and a bit more knowledgeable. Stealth OST puns and blatant lies since 2009 Jace Errata on Twitter

I got to know a few other people who also like to make web stuff / graphics etc... so that's cool to have EvE and that as common interests. Also, you learn more about the game, and poking around database dumps, particularly development server DB, can uncover some insightful clues about what is coming next. Hopefully I can make some OMGWTF ISK next expansion... but it's always risky. Ultimately I think what drives most people to do community based sites / tools and whatnot is just that they have the capability, and they want this feature or tool to be made their way on their terms. You can ask CCP sure... but doing it yourself is a lot less work.

I created a video tutorial on how to use the directional scanner for my corporation's new members, which we shortly thereafter made public so our PVP-University students could use it. Agony Unleashed Introduction to the Directional Scanner
The video got a TON of negative comments about my narration. Really nasty comments :) Apparently my poor attempts to talk slow, without my usual touch-of-southern accent, clearly, and precisely made me sound like a cross between a flight attendant and Rosanadana or something. Lots of positive comments on the content and presentation of the material, but my narration was hated or loved, no in-between
However, I must have done something right, because an educational video company (unrelated to Eve or gaming) hired me to write and narrate several small videos for one of their clients on contract. It wasn't big money - a few hundred dollars - but it practically saved my life, because I was unemployed and my electricity was about to be turned off. Something you really don't want to have happen when you are living in Las Vegas in the middle of summer (it was 118F/40C outside).
I've since moved out of Las Vegas into a cooler climate, I'm still unemployed, but if I hadn't taken the time to create that video, I really don't know what I would have done to survive this past summer's heat. What you do for yourself dies with you, what you do for others is immortal. |

It's endlessly entertaining to see the random comments, mails, convos, and waves in local I get from friend and foe alike. I also get a huge kick out of the fact that possibly the most consistently enjoyable part of my EvE experience is related almost entirely to a blog that isn't even in the game. |

I take him seriously. I think he provides a vital service to the people of New Eden... like I do on the forums

Serious answer time...
About eight months after I started my blog for EVE Online my father's small business began to struggle. Downturns in the economy, you know the story. He lost a major client, as in the original reason he had formed a company in the first place, and it threatened the entire future of his business. He knew he needed to get his company's name out there, knew he needed to expand his client list, but with the local economy still in major recession mode, finding people that were willing to spend more money on his services was proving to be a hard sell. I knew I wanted to do something to help, but thought I didn't know anything about the areas of business that he needed help in. That's when EVE proved me wrong.
My father and I ended up having a conversation one day discussing advertising strategies on a shoe-string budget. That's when I suggested the idea that he start aggressively building a social media brand for the company. Of course, he knew nothing about any of it, and I thought I knew nothing about it. All I knew was that I ran a blog and that for some reason Google seemed to really enjoy sending traffic to me for the things I'd write there. So the first thing I did was start my dad a new page for a blog on his company website. It turns out, I had been taking a crash course in search engine optimization over the last eight months and just never knew it.
So from the ground up, I designed a second blog for my father's business, started a twitter account and facebook page in the company name, and just started putting the name out there as much as I could constantly pimping the blog anytime there was a new article. The articles that were written, usually as some collaborative effort between my writing skills and my father's knowledge on the topic, were always written with an eye on what the news of the day was. Eventually, that timely writing paid off.
Over a period of the next six months we had accumulated followers on a new twitter account, some of whom were reporters in the local media. My dad got a call asking if he'd be interested in appearing in an interview to provide a voice as an expert on a topic that was in the national news at the time. That piece aired on a local news channel that broadcasts to millions and was easily the single biggest break the company has ever had.
Calls started coming in overnight. The business was saved, my dad was able to keep his dream alive, everyone lived happily ever after, cue the music, etc, etc. Well, maybe not quite that far, but it was definitely a turning point. My father's business would have definitely closed its doors had everything kept going the way it was, and I for one will always credit the experience I had gained through writing a blog in the EVE Blog Pack for making sure that didn't happen.

Over the years I guess my greatest contribution has been on the GD forums.
Although that's been negative as well as positive towards the game depending on the issues being discussed. So over all I guess the contribution for promoting the game has been minimal as the negative would undo anything gained by the positive.
I guess some people will be thinking at this point, well GD forums don't matter. But general forums can matter as people that maybe interested in playing the game will look at them whilst they try to decide if they wish to play it or not. Of course being able to trial a game has reduced this way of trying to decide but it's still a method used as well as reading from other sources.
But I say what I think, regardless how popular or not it makes me. Not just on the forums in RL too.
How has it affected me, well you guessed already, it hasn't. |

Every once in awhile, ill pick a new pilot and pull him under my wing, teach him what he has to know, set him up with ships etc. So far there have been 3, all are doing good and have stayed in the game. One is even a top pilot in Nulli. Point is if even a third of us older players would make a small similar effort to mentor or help new pilots, the game is alot better. My contribution i guess. |

I'm doing some game commentaries, mostly about eve and i'm enjoying it very much. It helped me to get over my shyness and i'm coming to the point where people contact me in-game with questions about the topics i cover, it's very fun. Game commentaries are relatively new and i'm glad to see it pick up for EVE aswell.

I run of couple of 3rd party eve related websites (most popular being EveWho) and have been active in trying to keep EveKill from imploding on itself. For some time I also maintained a mod for SimpleMachines Forum that integrated Eve's API into the forum itself.
I'd say the biggest influence is the expansion of the community in which I've become involved. In game, you get to know the people in your corporation and alliance. But with my websites, I've gotten to know so many more people, have gotten to chat with devs, have made people extremely happy and have royally angered others. These are people outside of the corps/alliances I have flown with, some of them even being "enemies", that I've worked with, given advise and taken advise, made fun of them and them making fun of me, and just in general having a good time while I do the side projects I love associated with a game I love.
While its all space pixels and fun, the characters on the other side of those spaceships are real people too, and they're a lot of damn fun to get to know. Cheers to all of you, fly dangerous o7 http://evewho.com - Alliance and Corporation Member Listings http://evechatter.com - Free Alliance and Corporation forums for all. |
