As for me I'm looking forward to finally stretching some legs and looking at something besides a ship constantly. Of course the new micro-transactions will allow me to look absolutely fabulous and gorgeously accessorized while doing it. The new CQ environment looks interesting and hopefully will be integrated well with the rest of eve.
For your safety please leave the fashion to the gorgeous and stay in your pod with your silhouette.
I fully agree with that sentiment.
(not gonna do it on this character, kinda messed it up a little but my other is great :D)

The spaceship part of the game is far too fu.. messed up right now and I am not talking about lag.
I already spend more time in the station environments then outside, so with Incarna it will look at least nicely.

Same here.
Thank God this option now exists.
Now if CCP can be REALLY intelligent and add the ship spinning hanger as standard when you dock rather than CQ, with a button to enter CQ then the whole thing works in terms of immersion and player usability.
You have that now. you know what, Fine, give those who dare to resist the winds of change the station/docking set up that they have right now. But I don't want to hear any sniveling or whining going forward when these same people are excluded from the new content, expansions and changes in eve which will undoubtedly be heavily linked into Incarna/CQ environment. Let them spin their ships circa 2011 forever. who knows maybe they'll become something like the Amish in space.

My computer runs Incarna fine and I will happily use it. I'm excited it exists. I don't really mind that loading the CQ takes about 8 seconds.
What I want is the choice of when I want to use it and not be forced into it every time. It makes no sense to me when I dock up, why the system we have right now (which is fast to load, has an uber ship I can zoom in and rotate, looks good and also offers me much more UI functionality) is going to be removed in favour of something that is slower, no longer has a nice cool ship to spin and rotate, looks good and offers less UI functionality than it did have before.
I want to play Avatar dress up and I like walking around and sitting in front of the TV with my Avatar. It's awesome. But there is no reason why such a system has to REPLACE the current one which in terms of actually playing the spaceship part of the game (and all the assorted docking chores) is VASTLY superior for various reasons.
In future expansions, even if I don't use CQ that much, I will welcome content that I probably won't use. Even now in the spaceship only EVE we have, there is tons of content that I currently do not use for various reasons. I don't mind if CCP releases stuff that doesn't affect me.
A combination of the ship hanger and CQ is a perfectly logical and immersion giving experience for everyone. It pleases those who can't run CQ properly. It pleases those who just simply like the ship hanger. It allows CQ to be used and doesn't detract from it in any way. It's the best of both worlds and will be a BETTER game for it because you are not removing one feature and replacing it with another, but holding onto two features that both have merits.
To be honest, this opinion is probably shared by more people in the player base than those who only want CQ to load and those who do not want it to load at all.

That would be fine if CQ was just a one off add on feature being added to the variety of others already in the game. But it is not, CQ/Incarna are the foundation for the future direction and scope of Eve Online from June 21st 2011 onward. While the upcoming debut of Incarna and it's CQ is admittedly pretty light on actual game play mechanics or non vanity content it is never the less where a major portion of eve's evolution and growth will come from as it starts to comprise more and more of eve's actual game play mechanics and content. It is also likely where a very large chunk of CCP's Eve resources will be spent from now on.
While CCP should probably allow either the current or a similar station/docking UI to exist along side the Captains Quarters to score some easy PR points and muffle some of the shrieking until Incarna is established, the appeasement will have to be temporary as sooner or later the expansion of Incarna and the impact it has on the game as a whole will make participation in it a fundamental requirement.
This will require some increase in the Computer spec requirements of the game. While it should be made a small as possible to include the most number of people possible it is unavoidable over the long term to improve and upgrade a game like eve and while never changing any of the fundamental programming or adding feature/content that would increase the computer requirements. Progress works forward and upwards.
TL/DR: Incarna/CQ is the future of eve. One cannot defy the winds of change. Bend and adapt or break and snap.

Edited by: Hannibal Ord on 05/06/2011 13:46:23 Joan, the issue is not the hardware requirement (though in some cases it is) it is the interface.
Incarna and its features to come I have no doubt will form a considerable part of the future of EVE. But that has nothing to do with the process and functionality of the button you click to access those features.
And if combining two features makes for a better game (which it does) then what you are asking CCP to do is make an inferior product. You are not helping CCP, you are actually hindering them and you are not on their side.
You think that offering advice on how to make a game more slick and polished is rejection of feature, and that makes you a bit of a fool really.
Edit:- Just to add, if CQ was JUST as fast or faster than the ship spin hanger at loading, I will still want the hanger to load first or the option to load either.

Should CCP decide to include the current obsolete docking interface along side the first version of Incarna and it's Captains Quarters it wouldn't be because the jury-rigged combination is a superior product it's simply a stop gap measure to make the transition easier for everyone.
The current obsolete docking interface is obsolete because it cannot allow for anything besides ship related functions while at the same time taking 1 of the only 2 spots in the universe where playing in first person perspective in a person is possible.
The CQ do need tuning to hasten the ship function interface to more closely match the speed of former obsolete one which i'm very sure will happen as soon as possible once implemented. once that is done and CQ is just as fast as the obsolete interface there will be no need to waste resources attempting to keep the old one afloat as it would then be redundant.
TL:DR The soon to be former station/hanger interface is obsolete, CQ still needs tuning/tweaking but it will be an improvement over the current interface.

Edited by: Mirabi Tiane on 05/06/2011 14:15:45 My issue with forced CQ is immersion. Incarna's main goal, as I understand it, is enhancing immersion. But if, through their implementation of CQ, CCP downplays the nature of capsuleers and arbitrarily tosses things into the game that don't make sense from an RP perspective when it's extremely easy and harmless to avoid doing so, Incarna is by definition failing to meet its goal.
A capsuleer does not get out of their pod every single time they dock.
Decanting is an uncomfortable, embarrassing process: you stumble out of your pod vomiting ectoplasm and then have to shower ectoplasm off your naked or mostly-naked body.
I don't foresee CCP changing the lore/PF so radically that this ceases to be the "reality" of decanting. We don't need to play out the details, we don't need a cinematic, but plopping a capsuleer character into a room with almost no indications of what they've just been through and parking their pod out in the open instead of lodging it in the outer wall of an indoor decanting chamber...makes no sense and gives new (role)players the wrong ideas.
The way things are currently portrayed in the CQ, the pod may as well be a small shuttle that carries the pilot to the bridge of their ship where they can sit in a chair and issue verbal orders.
No, "pretend your character didn't decant" is not a valid workaround. There are very few things in EVE that roleplayers and miscellaneous immersion-appreciators have to filter out or handwave. Why add more, especially when you're trying to increase immersion? |

While it does make for some incongruities in the lore, but to have the naked player plop out of a pod while vomiting fluids every time they dock would make for a rather disturbing and most importantly time consuming docking process. the main complaint about CQ is the perception that they won't be able to do everything they can now in a timely manor comparable to the obsolete interface. you'd have to plop, barf and shower at light speed to not delay the docking times from what they are now doing it that way. plus even if they don't show the cinematic how else could they indicate the barfing? i don't want my avatar to be stumbling around like a sickly ape

No, in space the neocom is fine since currently you don't interact through your avatar in space. in Stations the standard first person perspective interface used is fine since you don't interact through your ship in stations.

So yes in stations you think the Neocom should not be used anymore in favour of having to walk right up to the various interfaces scattered around a room to say, fit a ship or buy a module in favour of having both alternative systems or the current streamlined system?

Meh, a stopgap measure. Will most likely be abandoned on launch.
And the current CQ is actually immersion breaking! Matirx-style unplugging and getting the goop of and out of our bodies is part of the whole pod concept coolness. The CQ as it is implemented now breaks CCP¦s own lore.
Just leave us the current hangar and put a CQ button where the current RE-CUSTOMIZATION button is.

Should there be the same buttons and windows and side-bar menu while playing from your avatar, clogging up a large chunck of the screen and floating in mid-air as there is while in space? No. it would be hard to walk around with all those buttons and windows and overviews and such open. such is not an issue in your ship since there are no spaceship crashes and the computer 98% of the time pilots your ship to points you tell it to. The avatar interface template used by nearly every other MMO/third person shooter/(game involving people doing stuff) seems to work just fine and as seen in CQ has been adapted to fit eve.

My take on it is this, the current hanger interface is optimized to support Flying In Spaceships. Everything in it is designed to reduce your time spent in station and maximize your time in space.
The new CQ is optimized for Walking In Station. We'll probably see how efficenct a hub for Incarna in the future.
The thing is, alot of EVE players come for the Flying In Spaceships part rather than the Walking In Station part of EVE. So why not give them an interface (that CCP already has) to best support their goals?
Now in the future there may be a significant amount of people who come for the Walking In Stations part. So why not just make it an option? This is one of the few cases where CCP can easily satisfy EVERYBODY. With just a minimal amount of coding. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Fair question. The answer: "EVE Online - Walking in Stations/Ambulation/Incarna presentation from Fanfest 2008, part 1 of 3" Skip to 2:11 and watch from there. That's where the pod should be, not hanging around in the open with a narrow metal walkway to welcome the decanting capsuleer. It could be that it will only be like that in the Minmatar CQ and indoors in other CQs, but I don't think even the Minmatar would do that. It's obvious from the complete absence of any response from CCP in the various threads about CQ optionality that they have no real reason for designing it the way they have (and are just hoping we'll stop questioning it if they keep playing dead).
I blended that issue with the optionality issue, which wasn't the most coherent thing to do. They're connected but not quite the same. Optionality is needed because plopping the player-character directly into their CQ every single time they dock gives the impression that a capsuleer leaving their pod is trivial, quick, easy, and comfortable. The solution to that is simple: leave them in their ship, in the classic hangar view, by default and put a nice big unmissable "Decant" or "Leave Pod" button somewhere. Decanting is a choice, and it's something that most capsuleers would not choose unless they had a specific reason or planned to be docked for a while. |

The fact that there is nothing to suggest that there will be such a button. Also, the fact that there will no longer be a simple "docked" view ù the hangar view is gone and if you choose not to use the CQ, all you get is the CQ loading screen (except the room never actually loads).
Right now, to switch between CQ and non-CQ, you have to go into your settings and turn CQ off and relaunch your client. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

If you have just watched CCP's fanfest presentations on this... you might very well think so... BUT If you have checked CQ out on the actual test build, read the dev blogs and asked the devs on the test server in person... You would know the current official plan is that CQ replaces the old hanger so you go strait from space into CQ (or now an option to not load station environment which just gives you a permanent loading screen)
It would be great if in the final patch they made it so you docked into your regular hanger and then had a button to push to leave the pod and enter Incarna. But unless the dev I asked was lying, and the dev blog is very misleading, then that's not what's going to happen... Unless they change their minds... again. __________________________________________________
