Everything I've heard about Dust 514 sounds awesome.. except.. consoles only? Possibly PS3 only? I have a PS3, but I'd much rather play it on PC. Even if it is released for the PC, why is it being focused for consoles? Does someone at CCCP really think Call of Duty, Halo, and Gears of War players are going to play Dust 514 and then flock to EVE?
It's absolutely ridiculous to alienate your main player base like this.

This will not end well. Its going to be whittled down to a very small number of players within 6 months of its release.

For one, balancing an FPS to be used with both a controller and mouse+keyboard is close to impossible; controller users gets destroyed. Secondly is the fact that PC FPS is much more vulnerable to aim and wall haxorz, and thus making it an undesirable platform. Not to mention optimizing it for the various hardware. And third, the number of FPS players on PC relative to consoles are very small.
TL;DR: kb+mouse or die.

PC gaming is pretty much dead... for now at least. We finally starting to see developers crying that the hardware for the current console generation basically starts to show it's age and they'd like to switch back to the PC as a primary platforms but guess what... the greedy publishers are not done with beating the dead horse into the ground.
Give it a couple of years without the release of a new generation of consoles and the PC will be the prime platform for gaming once again until a next generation of consoles get's out.
But what are we whining anyways about that stuff? 90% of todays AAA games are crap anyways so if you want something refreshing and new we need to stick to niche games and indy titles.
But more on topic yeah there have been a gazillion of threads about this and guess what: nothings gonna change. I find that sad as well since I'm dying for a real good multiplayer FPS for quite some time. Preferably with a scifi-ish setting but there simply isn't gonna be one out for the foreseeable future. ----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! Contract me all your stuff so I can save it! |

Tell me, what looks "awesome" about Dust because to me it just looks like another generic shooter that only a couple hundred people will be playing in 3 months time.
Dust can't really have any significance in eve because if it fails, it could break eve.

Visuals look pretty, especially from an Eve perspective. I mean, hybrid tanks? That's kind of awesome.
But we appreciate that because we're Eve fans. You average console gamer isn't going to understand that. It won't matter one lick to him that the game is based on some PC game's universe. Gameplay is obviously an issue, but there are plenty of good console shooters that didn't survive because they can't sustain a player base. Console shooter addicts already have Modern Warfare, Halo, and Battlefield. I'd wager most of them aren't too interested in jumping ship.
Let's be honest here, Dusts true market is the Eve market; and we own PCs, not consoles.

Just 2% of the marketshare of the numbers for MW2 on consoles that Mothermoon told us up there, would set the 'subscribers' for the console part of Eve on one level with the players of Eve-SSG.
You guys always miss that just 300-400k constantly playing dusties will be enough to make the endeavour worthwhile.. Even if Dust won't be able to rake in the numbers of the blockbuster console FPS - hundred-thousands instead of millions - then this will be successful for CCP. How many PC dusties would they get instead, huh?

Why would you ignore the trend for console shooters? There are a ton of examples. Most. Console. Shooters. Die. Horribly. Dust will be a non-franchise game from a developer unknown to console jockeys breaking into a market of giants where people have already chosen their favorites. I'm sorry to be realistic but the odds are stacked against it.
If Dust interacts in any meaningful way, then we need people playing dust continuously. 200k box sales for CCP may be a profit, but if the community drops to 15k, it will have a negative impact on Eve.
Eve itself only boasts 300k subscribers, and half of those are alts/bots. What makes you think Dust will sustain 400k?

And I'll add they always have the option to port it to the PC once it stops selling/making money from the cash shop.

Also, what makes you think (and so confident) that a market which contains MILLIONS of players hasn't got some players that will try and stick with a niche game, i.e. Dust?
Can you read the minds of those millions of people? If that's the case you should go into marketing and become rich.. some companies out there would really like to have such information.

What makes you think it won't?
Of course we have the rather unique tie in with a persistant universe as a draw, people often overlook the appeal of that to console gamers, but that isn't the only appeal DUST has.
Looking at the gameplay demo we say it has a very solid FPS action core, and excellent system for obtaining new vehicles and equipment, character development of skills, an RTS element that many FPS games lack, and quite simply put a "reason" to keep playing and developing the character over time.
I think DUST has enough going for it apart from it's unique tie in to the EVE universe to be at least a minor success in it's own right. I don't think CCP is necessarily banking on huge numbers of subscribers, but would be happier with a stable number of subscribers. Well, players. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

I agree, dust looks like a fun game. And if it were on PC, I would totally buy a copy.
This is exactly my point. CCP is ignoring a guaranteed audience (i.e. Eve fans who would already be set up with the hardware required) by not releasing a PC version.
I don't set the market trends, I can only observe. And I observe non-franchise shooters by unknown publishers dwindle in population until the remaining players no longer want to sit through the wait times to start a game.

It happens all the time. The majority of modern console games, although fun, lack depth in gameplay and as such, games get old fast.
The console market has been designed this way on purpose. The console manufacturers want you to buy as many new games as possible and the developers only want you to play their game until the sequel comes out.
I used to be a hardcore gamer and i was exited by Dust when I first heard about it but once i realised it was yet another FPS in a market flooded with generic FPS's, i lost hope... Oh it connects to EVE online? that's a good bullet point to put on the back of the box i guess.
I've only been playing eve for a year and i find the game to be full of half finished ideas and broken mechanics... who will ccp make console to PC work when they can't even be bothered to refine what they already have?
... sorry i'm rambling now

It WON'T be a bullet point it will be a significant selling point spun to make it seem like the connection, whatever it actually will be, is much more integral/important than it is. That is how games are marketed, ie "you control the fate of the galaxy" but only if you want to play the good guy if you want to play the bad guy the 'world' turns on you and you get killed.

That's my whole point. They're sentencing their own game to death. If they focus PC development, a lot of EVE players will play Dust 514. Stop blindly defending CCP.
Also, PC gaming is dead? Rofl, Steam sales are higher every year.
