CCP made the best of a bad situation. People asking for sp (even though they lost none) are just greedy. And as it is not CCP's fault that the downtime happened, no compensation needs to be given out. Good job CCP  (NOT sarcasm!) professional web development for the eve community |

I knew it was a bad idea for CCP to start giving out free SP. Now anytime theres any sort of DT people start whining about getting free sp.
As much as I bash CCP I have to say they made the right call in this situation.

Lets not forget that these were the same guys that brought SONY down and tried to bring Senate.gov down as well. As far as free stuff, SONY was down for a week or so, EvE...not so much.

So since they did not know the extent of the attack or how to combat it right away other than taking everything offline, you would rather they had stayed online and potentially had your information stolen? Do you think before you speak or do you just mash the keyboard? Thanks but I would rather they had go offline and protected my information. If you want your information unsecured that's your business...because you're an idiot. In my opinion they not only acted responsibly but professionally. |

I will also mention the Sony network hack to personal data and such so it's pointless to compare that attack to the DDOS that was launched against CCP
Don't be moronic. CCP's was the appropriate reaction. A DDOS is the perfect cover for executing a more severe security breach.
Agreed, You have to send in the cookie monster before you go for the kernel.
Kill The Gibson! ;)
CCP reacted as any organisation should. If you're under attack you remove the attack surface.
In the case of a dDOS you remove your boxes from the network either physically or logically.
You scan, you check, you view logs and you confirm that noone was doing naughty things in your system while the entire NOC was otherwise busy trying to track, trace and defend against a flood of incoming packets.
Once the coast is clear you bring things back up and return to monitoring.
Then your post-event teams come in...
CCP protected your information using the most common sense method possible.
Kudos CCP for treating my personal information with the respect it deserves. :)

I am wondering if CCP have submitted a log of IPs that are related to DDOS attack to the FBI as a tip. I assume they probably have done this already?

Originally by: Hesperius If the stuff I was reading during the down time was correct, these guys stole the id Tech 4 source code via Brink over the last few days. CCP had the proper reaction to being attacked.
They did much more than "simple" DDOS attacks in the past. CCP reaction was good. In fact LulzSec actually complained about it. If LulzSec were to post something like that in these forums, they'd be trolled to hell and back with "cry baby" and "stuff. yourz. can I has?" replies. --- I don't know! What's the FBI got to do with this? The target network is in London and the attacker is most probably not in the USA. Also the IPs of the machines that attacked are totally irrelevant as they are random windows machines operated by unsuspecting users that have absolutely no clue. In fact your one could as well be one of them. It's not the botnet that they need to go after but the botmaster. --- I don't know! Important lessons to keep in the back of your head - always keep long term training in the back end of your que.
I would actually be really angry if CCP had not taken some preventative measures on this. Taking the servers down is perhaps a bit extreme, but you know what, I can't fault them. The industry is having to be very cautious right now.

Well... for one... Lulzsec organization have a landline phone number (614-585-9732) that led to Harrisburg, OH. I can assume that there are some American hackers responsible although we cannot arrest all those who are responsible, which is appropriate for FBI to handle this.

I'd just like to point out that some people did lose SP.
For example, I got home from a business trip late last night and went to bed, expecting to update my queue when I woke up, as that would be the time that it would be running out. Due to the downtime, I couldn't, resulting in several hours in which I was training nothing.
I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I've been to several forums on sites and groups hit today, and only here on Eve have I seen forum behavior that makes me think maybe lulsec were not entirely unjustified.
The sheer volume of douchebaggery, mindless panning for handouts, and players needlessly attacking one another makes me long for the days that Eve was an obscure game no one heard of and fewer played.
From what I can see, we're making 4chan look dignified and restrained.

This kind of thing is why CCP has kept my business for years, and will continue to receive it for years to come.

Originally by: Acac Sunflyier At first I found LulzSec's shenanigans amusing. But as they attack more and more gaming networks, they're alienating more and more of their fans. I for one wasn't amused that I couldn't log into eve, or League of Legends, or watch videos on The Escapist's website. As they continue on gallivanting around the web Lulzing at security, they're going to find that more and more people aren't Lulzing with them. My day was pretty much offline. So -3 LulzSec. -1 for killing eve when i wanted to play that. Minus another one for killing my backup. And, -1 for killing Yahtzee.
So basically they were cool until they did something that adversely affected you.
Nice.

The originating IP's would have been forged. One of the mitigation's for DDOS is to require of an IP that makes a request to the server to say it again. When it doesn't the request gets dropped. Just one of many strategies to load shed a DDOS.

Why? Did skill training stop? Maybe a proportional refund or 6 hours of game time added, though I don't think CCP owes players anything for such a minor downtime while defending their servers from an attack.
