I've thought about this a lot. It seems reasonable for large ships to have more than 1 person on board. Also I'd like to be able to have multiple capsuleers aboard a single ship. --

if a capsuleer technically controls the whole ship (up to the size of a titan so far), i dont see how they could implement multiple pods in a ship.
though having an actual crew to manage would be a cool addition.

Any crew dies when the ship pops, so every time you change ships or lose one the game would need to generate a new look for your crew.

Edited by: Dimitri Fukoyama on 17/06/2011 19:14:46 Maybe a love storyline like in mass effect, where you can charm the pants off that sexy comm girl youve been having your eyes on since she got aboard, give her a VIP tour of your captains quarters, things of that nature?
Im sorry i couldnt stop myself lol

That is the only thing about EVE lore that bothers me. Expendable crews. I always assumed the ship was fully automated but that didn't explain all the windows on the ships.
Ideally when you look out at your ship you should see ant-like activity around your ship of crew board/disembarking, and maintenance taking place. For now it's just a ship in a hanger all alone.
So in my little dream world, my ship is fully automated, or crewed by robots or something.

Stated once that they dont want it to be about "crews" rather feeling like a heroic badass in space.
The fact that crews are expendable goes to show the cold nature of the eve world.

Maybe slaves would work better? or hologram tv shows.
Im thinking more just for atmosphere inside the ship cabin.

Has EVE fiction ever addressed the dividing factor between the immortal capusleer and the average expendable crew member?
What separates the two? Money? Family name? Race? BO? What?

Ships have windows because they are built with crews in mind, recall that we fly capsule capable conversions of empire ships, its unlikely that the builders would bother to differ alter the aesthetic.

CCP once tried to have a player inside another players ship, it did not end well. The database cannot have one players data structure inside another.
As for Ships crew, there a lots of threads about it in the features and idea's forum, its also worth looking at the commonly proposed idea sticky for it.
Basically only some frigates have no crew. The rest of the ships have a maintenance crew aboard but they have no impact on ships performance. If you dig around on the web you will find some figures that used to be listed against ships listing crew size, CCP decided they were redundant since they had no effect and removed them. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

I think "The Elite" chronicle goes over the differences, but it's been like 6 years since I last read it. -----

The fact that you are in a Pod is the first problem. I look at it this way every ship is built to take mass damage and who better then robots to repair and maintain the ships interior/exterior. Now for the windows hell no you don't need them if you don't have passagers.
CCP are stuck here a bit if you ask me, as if you follow the storys they put out, there is others on the ship, but without any pod how do they live? They need to get rid of the pod all togeter and give us actual quarters on the bridge of the ship, as far as puting 2 different accounts on the same ship doing different things well thats a long stretch, so this is why they stick to the POD=1 Man or Woman
Now with Dust comming and the Drop Ships Im still waiting to see how we will transport the passagers, I mean hell there not in PODS so how do they survive the ride. Basiclly they got to many cooks in the kitchen if you ask me. Works best if you have one cook and a lot of assistant cooks.

I always found the whole pod back story a bit flaky. When I first started playing EVE I had no clue as to the back-story so the first time I got blown-up, I just assumed that little acorn shaped thing left over was my escape hatch. I didn't know I was actually living in the damn thing.

CCP is revamping and streamlining the whole lore background. Guess the above is an example of that. Hopefully it will include a way to actually find all the new info. Seems they are going to make 'lore' room for crew. Used to be a flat out "no crew" then it got to be no answer one way or the other, now in the recent "we'll answer your questions SoonÖ thread" crews are a yes.
And now you'll get to dress them all up and play Aurum dolls with them.

How about an NPC crew you can hire,
Ships have say a few sections, Gunnery, Engineering, Defence, Propulsion, Electronics. The Idea woul be an NPC crew for each section that can be hired at a station.
Crews gain experience through combat/mining/pve etc and give certain bonuses to certain skills etc. 1% bonus to ROF or something else.
Crews need to be paid, and payment is based on their skill levels. Could make a big difference in some cases.
Crews can also have traits maybe that branch off from their section or can give onuses or negatives to other sections of the ship.

Also you would need to write 750 letters of compensation to their families. And write heartfelt apologies to their children whose faces they will never see again. And deal with that class-action lawsuit that says you willingly endangered them.

funny...
now it seems eve players (and in some ways CCP) want eve to be more like STO

How many here actually play with the EVE "lore" in mind, that your character is in-cased in a pod of goo? I know I do not. I think of my character similar to how we see characters in shows like Firefly or Clear Skies. I have never actually thought of my character ever being put, or even(as lore implies) think, of her ever being shoved into a pod.
My character is not a pod person. Not in "my" EVE.

Been a long time since I 'cared' to play pretend, but my ships have always had crews, I have never been in a pod and my drones have pilots. I have no idea what ya'll have going on in your ships.

This is "my" EVE. EVE Online - The need for adding the human factor. <<< blog I wrote a year ago about EVE.
This. I really don't think about it too often, but when I do I certainly don't picture my dude floating around in a fetal position in some weird goo all alone in his ship. I like the idea of large numbers of people on board, etc.
Though as many ships as I've lost, they could probably label me a mass murderer in that case 0_o

Edited by: Fi1ippo on 18/06/2011 09:42:58 Honestly, a lot of the ships have a visible "bridge". The Megathron and the Machariel come to mind, as well as many of the transport ships. And countless other ships. So it would make sense that for the larger ships, there is a skeleton crew.
I know eve is centered around the "capsuleer" feeling of a one man army. But no one man can command and control a 1000m or larger ship by himself as well as deal with maintenance, repairs, weapons, defence, propulsion and drone control.
In MY eve universe, i have a skeleton crew. I'd imagine that it would be extremely difficult to make them in the game, without severe performance hits. So in the meantime ill settle with my imagination. (For example on a machariel have a skeleton crew of 200 or so personell to deal with ship duties)Besides, the feeling of actually being in COMMAND is what im looking for, and i found it in my own way lol.
For ships that have a bridge, or a cockpit, and its larger then a few hundred meters, it simply fits to have some kind of small crew on board. I mean why else would there be windows on the ships?

Crew would be a great isk sink. Bigger ship, needs more crew. Specialist ships need specialist crew. Great way for ccp to get isk out our wallets.
