So, MWDs and activated modules won't be much help. I'm guessing filling the lows with Nano's would be a good start? The right hull is where I'm really lost.
Thanks for any insights you can offer!

Best I could come up with is a Claw fill empty spaces as needed I guess At perfect level 5 skills it has a base speed of 821 m/s and a warp speed of 14.1 au/s
Nanos do help with speed but not as much as the overdrive injectors and interceptors already have pretty good align time. The biggest problem with autopilot travel is the droping out of warp from a gate a long ways out then having to slow boat your way to the gate. So getting to the gate faster is better than aligning to a gate faster imo.
The Small Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizers add 5.1 au/s to warp speed also making time between gates short.

You can also increase Drake Krain's setup with these implants:

Slot 7 Hardwiring - Eifyr and Co. 'Rogue' AY

If you want something cheaper and more low-skill than the Claw, you could try an Atron. Not quite as zippy as the Claw fit, but takes very little money or skill to get into. With two Hyperspatial Velocity Optimisers and a Polycarbon Engine Housing, plus two Overdrive Injector IIs, you get 8.64 au/s and 657m/s.
Note that the EHP is more-or-less nonexistent and you have all of 80 m^2 cargo space, but it's cheap, especially if you get T1 overdrive injectors - which doesn't make a difference of more than a few seconds per jump, I think. Because of acceleration time you don't spend that much of your slowboat phase at top speed.

To add, though: Drake is very much correct that sublight speed is vastly more important than align time. Frigate/ceptor-sized ships align very, very fast regardless, and the difference nanos make is minimal. The biggest speed factors are warp speed and slowboating time.

Or, if you have minmatar frigate at 5 go the vigil route. Same set up as the Atron (overdrive injector IIs in lows plus 2 hyperspacial velocity optimisers + polycarbon engine housing rigs) you will get 748 m/s and 8.6 au/s.
Pop in an afterburner in case you happen to be near your computer while doing the autopilot thing for an even quicker approach to the gate and you are golden.
The cargohold on the vigil is 77 m3 with this setup.

Probably not what the OP wants, but for hauling fairly medium amounts of stuff AFK, I use a Blockade Runner, pimped with cargo rigs and passive resist MID slot modules. It's an expensive shopping cart, but it can carry 2800 m3.
Ask if you want the exact fit.

Easy enough to use MWD on an autopilot ship, just stick a small paper weight on F1 and walk away

This is the setup I use for AFKing around empire space... Fill in mediums and highs as you see fit for your needs.

I chose the Domination Injectors over the T2 injectors because I wanted to keep over 100m3 cargo space for mod transports. It isn't the fastest in the navigation but warp speed it is crazy quick.
One of these days, I'm going to make a route that has 30 jumps and time the time it takes both in warp and in slowboat and see what needs to be adjusted. But with almost 700 m/s, an average slowboat to next jump will somewhere between 17-22 secs (depending on 12k-15k autojump). With my current 21.1 warp speed, I know at the moment, I spend about as much time slowboating as I do warping (starting, ticking and slowing down).
Anyway, I'm not definitely a geek at this but hope this helps someone.
