Quote: Graphics * SSAO is disabled on all video cards except NVIDIA cards. * ILR is disabled on Windows XP machines that use ATI GPUÆs. * Depth effects on Macs with ATI cards are disabled.
Ok, found out what SSAO probably means( ). And pity for the Macs. But what the heck is ILR, and why is it verboten on XP&ATI??

Well if you seen any of the Alliance Tournament IX matches there is a Nvidia Logo during every recorded mach. There is no doubt they sponsored that event. As for compatibility with ATI who knows, except usually them that pays gets.

How many games don't have issues with ATi stuff? I am thinking back since the days of Glide and every game has had an issue with ATi hardware at some level or another. ATi is the BetaMax of video cards.. sure it might be better under certain conditions, but almost everybody else supports the other guys (VHS)

When I first started with EVE I had both an ATI card and Nvidia.
With the Nvidia, I was able to antialise (this was before it was added in-game) but the text was blurry.
With the ATI, I was able to antialise and the text remained sharp.
I went with ATI and returned the Nvidia.
End of story. _ _________ _ "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." |

The more annoying this is that SSAO itself works absolutely fine with ATI cards; so either CCP is deliberately shafting ATI users or they are using an implementation that is flawed/not to spec.
Either way it would be appreciated if someone from CCPs development staff could explain the reasoning for these ATI changes? __________________________

Compare these:
ATi Developer Tools and SDKs
Nvidia Developer Tools and SDKs
Now, which one do you think you would go with?
Screen Space Ambient Occlusion disabled will improve your system performance. It's a relatively minor addition not noticed in most games, but may have some small impact on viewing your character and particularly clothing simulations. Depth Buffer is directly associated with this, and will have a similar impact.
I have no idea what ILR is, and can't find it anywhere. I would guess something to do with Light Interpolation or Rendering, but really: No idea.
Chances are they just haven't worked in proper support for ATi yet, as this is mostly incorporated in the Incarna portion of the expansion, which is largely reliant on Nvidia technology.
SSAO can work on ATi as far as I know, but may need some additional support put in before it can be 'unlocked'. I suspect the primary reason it has been left out at this stage, is a direct result of it not being able to take advantage of the hardware acceleration on non-Nvidia GPUs, and it having a negative impact on performance, such that it can drop your performance, (with Hardware Acceleration), by 10-15 FPS.
Possibly expect a later patch? idk

One thing is certain though. Playing on the carebear side of things right now it is inevitable spending a long time docked processing and checking prices and etc. So if this crippled Physx crap (for non-Nvidia users) is too bad I'll just have to leave EVE again until they un-cripple said software Physx. Which they wont do, of course.
Unfortunately I wont be giving my isk away this time either, so don't bother asking. |

Also, do not badger other companies who make video cards. They have quality products, too.

Nvidia wonders why some people still refuse to buy thier products, these type of practices is exactly why. It would be good if that was all that happened, because crippled Physx has the nasty tendency to deteriorate performance the longer the Physx environment is running. Just play crap games like Mafia II and you'll see what I'm talking about. Having to restart the client every half an hour is the oposite of fun. |

The one flaw about capitalism: when you reach a stage where capital begins to hinder progress.
Ideally the better product by the little guy would sell replacing the inferior product by the bigger guy. The reality however is that the bigger guy has more capital to hinder the progress of the better product by buying out the little guy and shelving the better product. The better product will never see the light of day again and the bigger guy now has the rights to it as well.
Hence...why we are still dependent on fossil fuels. Big oil companies buy out any innovations in the field and shelve the project for the sake of keeping their customers addicted.

thats not really a capitalist system problem thats a monopolistic market problem. there are difference levels of competition and even a duopoly is healthy enough competition for computer components. there have been cases of international microchip firms in the 90s involved in collusion but they were caught, amd and nvidia are not colluding and will be innovating until one of them, probably nvidia, goes under because theyre dumb. amd will always be able to fund ati because theyre also competing with intel for cpus. and even when nvidia does go under someone else will take their place, its not like hiring chinese kids to sauder capacitors on a board is hard please peddle your propaganda someplace else, comrade

Odd, I have zero complaints about AMD cards. It's CCP's use of crippled Physx (to try and force us to buy Nvidia cards like all the other Physx games to date) what's causing the rage. Unless by buying smart you mean falling for their silly PPU BS. (Also, -1/10. You need more practice.) |

Edited by: Ciar Meara on 21/06/2011 11:34:28 I noticed it to in the patchnotes.
I have had both ATI and NVID cards both worked fine if you worked out what drivers to update to and what drivers to ignore. I just buy what suits me at that moment.
I don't get that a gamecompany is just going to disable something that is functioning in cards because they have good "contacts" with NVID? I am assuming many other people buy ATI cards also.
I have a HD6950 and AMD processor because I wanted a good system for a lower price, since I do have other obligations then buying the ultimate gaming rig.
Intel had a problem with its sandy bridge at that moment so the choice was clear AMD/ATI combo. But still, that combination gave me a 2 gig powerfull Graphics card and a 6 core processor for half the price of a comparable intel/NVID system.
No need to disable something that we can disable ourself if there are any problems. Besides, CCP needs to program for both GPU's not just those it has good contacts with.

Yup, as a Radeon owner I could be raging, but, meh, I've raged enough about stuff. As long as the game remains playable on the Radeon, I don't really care. Nvidia is heading down a one way street anyway, pushing graphics over content so hard, because people are caring less about that these days.

This is nothing new. nVidia has done this loads of times in the past, and so has AMD/ATI to a lesser degree. Bugger all to do with anything from a technology standpoint and everything to do with marketing/PR. There have been cases like this in the past where doing something as simple as spoofing your graphics card ID (so that a game recognises an AMD 6970 as an NV 570 GTX for example) fools games into running with everything enabled.
If CCP have something positive to say about this, they will say it. If they don't, they will probably say nothing. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they reply just to prove me wrong, maybe with a "We can't reply to every thread" response and then fail to answer the questions in this thread.

Sadly Nvidia takes that more power part sometimes a bit too literal.
Anyway many Nvidia fanboys I see here. Fact is, sometimes Nvidia got the better ones, sometimes AMD, same with processors on AMD vs intel. And usually the difference isnt too large, but when I upgraded my computer last time AMD just released the 58xx series, and fanboys can argue all they want, at that time AMD was clearly a way better option than anything nvidia had.

Unless CCP goes allergic to money, it should always run on ATI products.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the performance is nearly identical on both brands, but Nvidia is paying for CCP to say they have EXCLUSIVE AWESOME FEATURES.
It brings a chuckle when CCP, the company that prattles on about being :AWSUM: and doing everything the :hardway:, routinely gets on their knees and blows Nvidia. ...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

By looking at the games in the list of the link in the OP, most if not all are mainly Nvidia supported games which leads me to believe that it's one of those features that Nvidia cards natively support through the hardware itself and not driver adapted to be supported with ATI users. So CCP disabling it for ATI users would be more benificial in the long run, especially when ATI go into their dodgy driver release modes

Let me explain something for the fanboys.. and coming from someone that lives implementing 3D stuff.
ATI/AMD approach always was and it still is. Do not care to follow standards, make each important game be supported specifically in your drivers with workarounds to get best possible performance and qualit.
NVIDIA always was , Follow the damm standard and make something that will work well even if we don't even know that the game exist.
That is why You cannot say that " but that works on my AMD card on game X Y or Z". Because that is irrelevant, ATI drivers are different code path for each important games when t heir standard implementation does not work.
This seems just one more case of the non adherence to standards from ATI makes things fail on games that are not their partners or that they do not care enough to support.
People blaming NVIDIA, this is ATI/AMD fault! Not CCP, not NVIDIA, the one that should be shamed is AMD because of their pathetic and irresponsible approach.
I work making technical image reconstructions, where errors could cause wrong diagnostics and dead people, and would NEVER EVER use an ATI card exactly because its impossible to know what to expect between each time they change their drivers.

I find it interesting that all these people are guessing what the issues are yet not one Dev has chimed in. What does Nvid and AMD say about this?
Are the ATI features turned off due to problems with coding and interface with the program?, or is this a case of Nvid cutting some type of deal for CCP to focus on the Green machine?
I an AMD Fanboi. Always have been, why? 'Cause i'm also a cheap scottish-Canadian and I prefer the bang for the buck with AMD. The choice was made based on $$$ vs function. I expect the Nvid and AMD to be slightly different different with the green machine being on top. That said, if CCP is further reducing AMD due solely to a deal. Well, thats wrong, imo.

I own waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many computers.
I also have multiple AMD and nVidia games machines.
Why? Because I don't have the time of day to fart about listening to toss pot fan bois. Just buy both types at the same time, build, run them side by side, give the lame one to the Mrs.
- nVidia games machine runs every fine with the drivers from nVidia - AMD (ATi is dead, please get with the programme) requires 3rd party drivers to keep up. It's now the wife's computer and for a reason.
Both systems (Intel / AMD) are equivalent. Both systems are current medium spec games machines. I have many older spec machines sitting about for spares and repairs / Linux boxes / for my kids to play with etc etc.
AMD and their video cards were once the right choice.
Today, Intel is eating their lunches.
Tomorrow ? Who knows, but AMD are very much playing catch up right now. Oh and for people that have video cards exploding and burning out, looking at my pile of cards, I have 2 more nVidia burn outs than AMD ones (ATi back then). So there may be something in that.

Oh, ad hominem-arguments. The last resort of those who can't form a coherent argument to begin with.
AMD are painting themselves into a corner, THEY are the result of the recent trend among software developers to can ATI-support.
Informed customers will naturally buy and use what actually works properly. Instead of buying some less compatible, non-working product.
First of all the "coherent argument" of the other party consisted of 'you should buy this cause its better and I have it'.
Secondly, I did research on the choice of GPU. I didn't base my research on fanboyism though. I based my choice of GPU on several things, price, use of electricity, capabilities, decibels and incorperation of CPU/Motherboard. Buying AMD/ATI at that moment made sense.
While I don't mind buying i7 processor with an nvidia card I just had my old nvidia card blow up (twice in a row). At the moment of buying (early in the year 2011) i7 processors had a serious problem with their sandy bridge and I didn't want to buy a product that had flaws designed into it and hope it would get patched. (I allready do plenty of that playing EVE)
Therefore I opted for a 6 core AMD, knowing it wouldn't be as powerfull as the i7 but in tests it showed that while not as powerfull in games it did achieve parity in most other areas and CPU power isn't the mother of all determining factors when playing games. Getting an HD6950 to complement this processor was a logical choice and knowing I could flash the bios on the HD6950 to a 6970 in the future was an added little extra.
While I don't need to explain myself to anyone for buying one of two possible mainstream brands I feel I can illustrate that not everybody buys what they see advertised, cause brother NVID cards are advertised everywhere!
What bothers me is that since there are 2 mainstream card manufacturers and no clear standard for most operations (Nvid standards are no more standards then windows standards are) CCP should make the game function for both cards and not arbitrarely disable a feature on a card that happends to be the direct competitor of the card manufacturer they have commercial dealings with.
As any gamecompany they should remain impartial and program their little (very little?) hearts out. ------------------------------------------------- A friend of death, a brother of luck and a son of a *****

Glide was designed by 3dfx for 3dfx. It is a proprietary API that was only natively supported on 3dfx branded cards. Of course it's not going to run(or run well) on ATi hardware. In order to play Tribes or GLQuake in OGL, you had to use Glide or a hack, which caused some rendering issues. EverQuest didn't support OpenGL, only Glide/3dfx cards, otherwise it ran in D3d(which was far inferior at the time), same with Unreal. The issue back then was hardware lock(in-a la Glide), the lack of true OpenGL support, and Direct3d/DirectX being total crap.
As far as today, I've been using nV and ATi/AMD on two separate systems for about 7 years. I've had no problems. I don't know what kind of issues you're talking about. The worst complaint people had was the shoddy driver support, and ATi drivers have been good since the 8500 compared to what they were previously, and on par with nV for quite a while.

AMD makes solid cards (They have a faster top of the line card then Nvidia atm) and so does Nvidia. Around the time Ati released the HD5*** series Nvidia was still way back in performance, energy consumption and heat production, everybody was buying ati because of the way better proven stats. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2011-gaming-graphics-charts/Enthusiast-Index,2674.html
With the GTX 4 and 5 Nvidia the tide shifted in favor of Nvidia but with the HD69** series its kinda in the middle atm.
As you can see in the charts, Ati/amd works great and so does Nvidia the differences are minimal so the only thing to look at is price vs performance, which changes brand every few releases.

Considering the quality of Nvidia fanboys' (and maybe marketing alts) posts so far it's very evident why they fell for the PPU scam.
But anyway, unless CCP actually implements multithreading support for software Physx and other improvements supposedly made available to developers by Nvidia there can be a very noticeable and sometimes unplayable drops in performance due to intentionally crippled Physx. Just as it has happened in all those other crappy Physx games out there. and in the end that is all I care about and what will affect my decision to continue playing or not. |

he's refering to the nVidia buys 3dFX back in the beginning of 2000. the transfer of IP left nVidia not able to use dual GPU cards and the SLi technology that 3dFX had made for about 4 years. Also, nVidia bought 3dFX legally so IDK where the "omg nVidia stole technology from 3dFX" comes from.

Edited by: London on 21/06/2011 14:58:23 Well this is just lazy if it's only 'nvidia' code that causes artifacts on AMD GPUs. AMD cards definitely support all the same features. I run SSAO and advanced depth effects in games like Shogun 2, and SSAO in Bad Company 2 on an AMD 6970.
I guess it's the same thing with AMD stamped games like Shogun 2, but at least those effects still work on nvidia cards too because the company doesn't want to split its customer base.
Shame on you CCP. Get in contact with AMD catalyst people and sort this out, don't just turn your back on it because you happen to be partnered with a jolly green giant. .................................................................. Create a Starship contest entry: Naga Frigate |

ATi Developer Tools and SDKs
Nvidia Developer Tools and SDKs
Now, which one do you think you would go with? ...
Heh. And they chose PS3 instead of XBox 360 for Dust 514. If it were just a matter of dev tools, the XBox is by far the easier choice. (I know, they chose PS3 because Sony permits CCP to connect the console to CCP's network directly.)
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5870 on Windows 7. That card was better than anything NVidia had to offer at the time I bought it. Thankfully, none of those restrictions seem to intersect with my current configuration.

Just wanted to comment on this.
We have a huge range of hardware that we need to support and as we push Trinity sometimes we hit edge cases. In this release, we found a number of issues at a very late stage with some of the graphical features which related to ATI. These are defected and when fixed will be put out to TQ so everyone can see these features.
No conspiracy. As per our published requirements, we support ATI and NVIDIA cards and will continue to do so.
So everyone knows what we are talking about;
Screen Space Ambient Occlusion ILR - Internal Lens Flare is a post process that does lens-flare like effects.

People has a tendency to forget ATI also had their own dual-GPU sollution back then. Too bad they never wrote 2000/Drivers for it though. Who'd have thought gamers would move to an NT-based OS?

Is this the same functionality that allowed suns to be occluded via the checkbox? Because if so, my ATI card handled that quite well.

I've been a PC gamer since 1995 and exactly this is what I've come to expect in any post on a game forum related to ATI(amd) vs. nVidia; ATI just sucks balls in terms of making development easy on their platforms.
Way back in the day, the half life 2 source code used at one of the E3 demos (2003 IIRC) was leaked onto the interwebs. If you had an nVidia card, things worked fine. If you were running ATI, it was all over the place. Valve reassured customers that making things compatible with ATI would happen before the final release.
tl;dr in the same manner than when you design for Windows, then release for OS X if possible, you design for nVidia and then make it work for ATI.
If you want further evidence of this, just go look at the ATI forums.

That's not how we work. We encounter problems when developing new graphics tech all the time and we fix them. This time is just happened to be some really late breaking problems with one card manufacturer rather than another.

Of course, the correct customer friendly approach is to let the user toggle the feature in case it is incompatible with his configuration, rather than a blanket ban (disable it by default for hardware you believe won't work). Then you avoid the whole omgdrama.
If it turns out that a driver fix is released before you guys manage to fix your bad code then all the better. You get to sit around and write more bad code rather than fix the old bad code. Excellence at work.
Oh, and I would try to steer away from phrases like "This time is just happened to be some really late breaking problems with one card manufacturer"; because the card manufacturer isn't responsible for your code - it isn't their problem.

Oh cool, I didn't know we were getting SSAO!
IMHO Ambient Occlusion can make a big difference in games. And thanks to Nvidia drivers, I usually can find a way to force SSAO in games that don't natively support it. It can give a nice visual boost to older games (I could never get forced SSAO to work with EVE though...)

I knew it had to be related to simply not having all the time in the world. And with all the new GPUs flowing out of AMD these days, some issues had to come up.
I guess some of us were worried that the unwritten comment after the diabling list was "and never shall be turned on again"
Which was not there.

It would be nice if someone from Dev team could show us difference in game visuals with nVidia compered to ATI graphic cards. Post some pictures and point to differences (with SSAO without...). Maybe it's not that big difference in image quality. Curently using ATI HD4870, CQ stedy 35-40 fps, inspace 60fps.

I had my eye on an ATI 6970 card, but now I am wondering about *perhaps* getting a NVIDIA card? Are there any reasons for getting one over the other? Or is it just a matter of personal preference?
