To quote something from a book I read:
Quote: When the ship cleared for action, the bay would be opened to space, the emitter assembly would train outboard, and the powered ram would move the entire weapon outward until the emitter head cleared the hull and could bring up its gravity lenses safely. Honor had always been privately amused by the fact that modern energy weapons were "run out" like some echo of the muzzleloading cannon of Old Earth's sailing navies
This could also be the explanation for the laser recoil, since for each salvo the crystals have to be mechanically moved for cooling and readjusting.

Edited by: Alessandra Karris on 02/07/2011 02:21:28 It's better than the explanation that the Devs gave. Their reasoning?
To put it simply, it looked cool and they did so much work they didn't want it to go to waste.
EDIT: To be fair, it does look cool, and I totally understand - physics be darned! :D

Correct, but as we are in the fiction area that is also tied to roleplay a believeable setting is quite important.
It can be also fun trying to find the background-explanations of ingame-features.

To me laser turrets which "move back" (i didn't said recoil on purpose ) slightly is not "unrealistic" and weird and immersion breaking at all.
My personal explanation is that turrets, when firing the laser beam, fall back into their mount to anchor better for greater precision in that few seconds when the beam is fired. And when salvo is over they return to previous "front" position, lens is cleared of residual static electricity, coils are charged again and turret anchors at the back of the mount when beam fires again.
At least thats my personal explanation for myself . -------------------------------------------------

Copy pasta:
Quote:
The total energy E of a body is related to the relativistic momentum p by
E^2 = (pc)^2 + (m_0c^2)^2
where p denotes the magnitude of p. This relativistic energy-momentum relationship holds even for massless particles such as photons; by setting m0 = 0 it follows that
E = pc
For both massive and massless objects, relativistic momentum is related to the de Broglie wavelength λ by
p = h/λ
where h is the Planck constant.
So photons have momentum. Momentum is conserved last time I checked.
The magnitude might be the real question.

I just pretend the lasers are particle cannons. After all, the term "laser" is used pretty loosely in the EVE-verse.
(Doesn't explain the recoil on all the guns, I know, but I do what I can.)

No. You don't move the whole weapon to readjust the crystal.
