Right, nice spherical things that give a bit of background. Don't seem to do much and you can even fly through them. To me these entities seem extremely underused.

Take elite for example, from a few bytes of algorithmn Elite was able to generate over 8000 planets with detailed information that would enable to you to make informed trading selections. There is no reason why this can't be adopted in some form by the EVE environment.
Think of it as a kind of NPC element to a player driven trade. Also it would revive the commodities markets which seem to be surplus to requirements at the moment, unless you ship big and get lucky.

There's no reason why you can't take this further in EVE. You could start going down the road of surface shield projectors for stations and other smaller installations, surface to space weaponry, defensive measures and specialities that boost the services provided by the orbiting stations ... and in turn spawning a whole slew of new ship equipment such as surface bombardment weaponry, and surface attack vehicles...

Want to own a planet?
I don't propose that this extends to actual surface experiences like Frontier, but invasion can be implied by dropping automated or NPC forces to take over planets once the orbital defences are sufficiently depleted.

Planets could provide great tax sources for their owners and by returning investment, planetary governers can build centres of excellence/facilities that could be applied to just about every technology and skill used by EVE currently.
Example: R&D centres boosting research in orbital stations.
Example: Galactic academies that boost learning times in stations above.

Populations, race and primary activities would determine such influences further, as well as being yardsticks for trade decisions.

this in turn opens up the idea of finding uncolonised planets suitable for life...and another new set of opportunities, skills and equipment arise with it. Terrorforming, surveying etc.. ships designed to set up viable colonies that grow according to suitability.

In turn...intergalactic conquest, empire building...genocide...imagine being the last of your race!

1. Being able to buy 'Passengers' and drop them off at an M rated planet to work for you would be kewl.

2. Stations that orbit planets will have 'planetary miner platforms' - you'll be able to mine a planet from space - would make more sence if you just had a 'teather' that transfered ore from the planet's mining facilities...or just shuttles and stuff.

3. Buying/transporting armies that battle enemy armies to control planets would be kewl.

4. Populating a planet with different types of people/equipment would yield the corporation that sponsored them a share of the profits.

5. Planetary defences would be kewl to implement...or even planetary bombardment modules that can fit into battleships/titans.

6. NPC trade demand...planets can generate trade/illegal goods and players can transfer these goods between planets for money

7. When you conquered a planet, you should be able to rename it (Welcome to planet Bob!!!)

Those where just a couple of ideas...I'll add more if I come up with them.

I recall hearing back during beta word that the Planetary features would be implemented later (probably as an expansion pack).

As for letting ships land/dock there'd have to be factors considered to permissable re-entry.
(You think those Minmater ships that are wired together with duct tape and binder twine could handle re-entry?) ;)

Any of you remember the p&p rpg Traveller®?
Ships had a streamlining factor. The big boxes couldn't go anywhere near an atmosphere, whereas the partially streamlined ships were able to refuel in the Gas Giants, and only streamlined vessels could actually land in atmospheric bodies.
I can see it now... Battleships with their Vapor Bores hovering over a highly populated planet arguing with a Planetary Manager that the planet was in the way of the new Hyperspatial Bypass and was about to be toasted for its Isogen content.... (oh, right... that's been done before) <grin>

Harmor, was it your intention to repeat my post in bullet point form lol ;).

The idea of ground sites even with a static scene for atmosphere and re-entry sounds excellent. BTW This can't be an expansion pack. They already take 19UKP/month plus initial purchase price. You are paying for this development already.

How could you do expansion set, everyone buys it simultaneously...and if you don't you can't play???? How to kill a game in one easy step, heh.

Gan, EVE has already had 2 expansion packs. The latest one was revelations. They're not exactly expansions since you don't pay for them, they're more like big patches, but people still call them expansion packs. Also atmospheric flight is something that is in the works. I'm not sure about owning your own planet and stuff, but it's certainly a good idea and I hope one of the Devs sees this thread. But on the subject of atmospheric flight, I saw a very cool video on youtube of another game's atmospheric flight system. The video's title says that it's EVE Online, but really it's not. The poster was just confused. It's actually a game called Infinity, and the mass size of the planet showen in it is stunning! I'm hoping the EVE engine can handle something similar.
Infinity atmospheric flight.

Also, I found this video too. This is EVE's atmospheric flight demo, it's not as impressive as the above one because it's being filmed on a TV and looks really ****ty. But gives you an idea.

Actually I'm glad you resurrected this thread. I think ironicly the subject matter is more relevant in today's EVE and what's coming up than was when this thread was first started.

DEVS, the Infinity planetary flight demo in the post above to me is the bar to reach and go past for this feature when it comes down the road. I read in a Dev blog concerning Ambulation, that EVE wants to be cutting edge in every aspect when a new feature is intoduced and I think that what that video showcases is IT. I hope some people in the office that matter in this subject have seen that video and are aware of it. And even if they are they should watch it again lol.

In addition to the now old suggestions here for how to possibly handle planetary resources (though I'm sure CCP is already on top if it in their own way) I think that flying through planets needs to be addressed. If theres one thing that smashes your suspension of disbelief in the world it's when you fly through things and ESPECIALLY how I can shoot through asteroids and such. I think if planets and any solid object in EVE were actually solid it would only add to the tactical aspect of flight, and fights.

Yeah, i think the ability to fly in planetary atmospheres is planned for Revelations 3. Who knows maybe CCP are planning on allowing players to "colonise" the planetary surface. That would open up a whole new series of options.

** In the video above, mention is made of "new territorial conquests".

They do plan to make planetary interaction its on thier to do list or as one would put it, in thier cupboard. Similar to how ambulation aka walking in stations was until whitewolf joined up and that got put on the backburner and is slowly cookie and beginning to smell tasty.
Mabey it will be the next big thing after the walking in stations.
However as of old and new Devs have stated the following they want to go in three steps.
Step 1 would be the atmo flight
Step 2 planet station with unique services (crew hiring anyone? how about manfuacutring of trade goods and achealogy work orders?)
Step 3 fully player infrastructure hinting at colonization terraforming and a an RTS hybrid required to take it over from somebody else instead of a pos seige, there are modules in data base already for dreadnaught sized troop pod launchers and troop pods that take 1000 militants +mins and tech2 parts to build. hmmm are we going to get tanks, apcs, and mechs as well? who knows.

Things to implement with planets:

Surface outposts: Players can establish (probably using construction crews/drones) surface bases on solid planets (in empire, you will need charters), and gas mining outposts on gas planets. These bases would be under control of a corporation, and would be controlled similarly to stations. Mining is an obvious activity, but on habitable planets (or outposts that use domes), manufacturing, research, even agriculture might be options.
Orbital bombardment: If this isn't implemented as soon as surface outposts are, surface outposts will be overpowered. First, we have to be able to get close enough to planets. Second, we need ships that can fire at planetary surfaces. Unfortunately, at the moment, firing on planets with atmospheres isn't going to happen, since no ship that I know of has the range to fire from orbit through a thick atmosphere. Habitable planets might be invincible (or not colonizable - they could already be inhabited). With planets that lack atmospheres, we will need to get much closer than we currently can to planets.
Landing: Only small ships (frigates and shuttles) will be able to land on planets. However, we could allow larger ships to dock using space elevators, which will allow the transfer of cargo to and from the surface with ease. Another interesting aspect would be establishing a POS that had a space elevator connecting it to the surface.
Planetary defenses: Similar to stations, only cheaper (since you can use the surface to anchor them).

Settlements: I made a separate post, since this is a big thing.

Settlements are different from other outposts because they have non-capsuleer residents.
A settlement is basically a company town - everyone there works for you (unless you use slaves, in which case it is a plantation). The labor force a settlement provides makes full-time production a real option - you could have your workers mine or manufacture continuously. Food shipments would be needed to keep your citizens alive, until you get hydroponics modules (which produce food, making your colony self-sufficient).
Conquest would also happen - apart from bombarding a settlement (which not only destroys it, but angers all humanitarians within several light-years), you could use marines. Surface attack vehicles might happen, but remember that most - potentially all - settlements will exist on planets without atmospheres.
One could even introduce slaving into the game - you could raid settlements (even those on inhabited planets) for slaves, and sell them on the market. Amarrian settlements would probably use slave labor heavily, as would unscrupulous zero-sec alliances (since slaves are easier to acquire than free workers).
Finally, if zero-sec alliances acquire enough workers, those workers could become citizens. How this would impact capsuleers, I'm not sure, but it could lead to diplomatic relations between the NPC factions and capsuleer alliances. Then when these relations go sour...

OK, is the headline "Band of Brothers declares war on Amarr Empire" too much to hope for?

one offline space sim but is also limited multiplayer if anyone has played it is universal combat writen by some deryk guy he has a good sales.

The thing about universal combat is a) spaceships all the way from fighters up to capital ships u can pilot b) shuttles tow around cargo and even smaller craft c) armies u can deploy a transport craft and invade planets with it d) fps on the ground its very godo quality

so we have

a) space sim combat and trading
b) small to big ships
c) upper atmospheric craft that can shoot ground targets
d) planetary tanks u can pilot these to or take on the role of a infantry man ( quake style on the planet)

all these things and a few others likke moon mining and station attacking can all be done from simply switching from youre command ship to fps to flight sim to even submarines i think in the current edition. So its very indepth and runs on the PC, graphics in places arent the best and its a bit long winded warping around but i sugest u either try it or download the old freeware battlecruiser 3000 version

(Copied from another post, Seems like it belongs here.)

Quote:
I would like to see more integration of planets and moons in the game.

* New surface-side economies that run according to the needs/production capabilities of NPC populations giving traders a reason to move cargo from world to world for missions or profit. Include world specific missions as well such as destroying the shuttle of a pro guristas political figure before it can reach the safety of the orbiting escort.

* New player created structures that can be established on planets. Think a POS but on the planet surface where only special ships can attack from low orbit. Allow for new production options that stations and belts can't offer. Include surface to orbit weapon systems for defense.

* New class of ships: Orbitals that can bridge the gap between deep space and atmosphere. All types of ships can be included from combat to courier. Imagine vessels suited for surface bombardment and haulers that can take off from the surface and warp through low orbit to drop cargo at an orbiting station or from one surface trade post to another. Land on worlds where there are no space stations and you and other traders are the sole source of desperately needed supplies.

* Make it dangerous for those who don't fit correctly or train the proper skills with weather events and the real possibility of crashing or burning up in the atmosphere. Interference from planetary factors that affect ship operation/mods.

* Allow for corp/alliance sovereignty of an entire world by control of key cities. Allow the NPC population to be taxed by the sovereign ruler and managed in a "Civilization" manner. Appropriate social and management skills needed for these options.

I do believe that adding planetary interaction gives EVE a great deal of more in-game depth. Planets and their special attributes would give people more reason to fight for, more reason to conquer, other than complexes and plain-old system-sovereignity.

Personally, I'd like to see the following things to be able with planetary interaction:

a) "Settlement boosters": Actually a settlement, one settlement can be built per town. Each type of settlement has one special attribute (just like outposts have), and the attribute has effect on the entire solar system. You could think of manufacturing time boosting, skilltraining time boosting, shield recharge boosting, RoF boosting, armor HP boosting, whatever. Building a settlement would just be like building an outpost: Drop an egg at a planet, dump materials in it, wait till after DT.
b) Planetary Warfare. Planets would have the ability to equip defensive weapons just like POSes do. Thats how it works, period. The weapons placed on the planet would even possibly have the ability to shoot at any hostile ship within a few AU from the planet.
c) Energy Nodes. Arrays of solarpanels, shattered across the solarsystem (or constellation?), in an orbit around the sun or planet. A planet only runs if enough energy nodes are built, to supply enough energy. The owner of a planet would have to link each node that he built, with the planet. The nodes just teleport their energy into the planet. The deal of Anti Blob in this: These nodes would make it possible for enemies to gather some cruisers, and go shoot an enemy node. Small fleet, small blob, but it can have a nice impact. Destroying a node could mean that a planet does not recieve enough energy to run, and it's settlement would get deactivated.

I'll help you beat it.
CCP have been ignoring planets for four years. They need to get this right, and soon, IMO. Eve space is EMPTY, with planets moons and stars that are just so much wallpaper. Pretty wallpaper, yes, but it should be more. Every other MMO out there has better game landscapes, landscapes that makes sense and that you can interact with. Eve solar systems have stayed at the most basic level since the game came out. The devs should make a start, show us what they can do. Don't have to do it all at once. But they have to do something.

And thanks for the vid links Thomas, btw. Depressing to see what they haven't bothered to do in game!

Well, it's on the drawing board. Seems they might have plans for some sort of hybrid RTS.

Just remember, those planets that are habitable (breathable atmosphere) will already be colonized. In many was, capsuleers would benefit more from establishing settlements on airless moons.

Well, I just really hope CCP doesn't change the game play too much. You can't have a game out for 4 years and then all of a sudden drastically alter aspects of it. RTS hybrid sounds like a good idea as long as it's done in the style of EVE. Meaning, don't have an over head view of the planet allowing you to see all your forces. Instead (this is a concept I've had of an RTS for a while now) have the commander command like a real commander(in other words don't treat him like god). Make them go down to the planet in there ships and watch they're forces fight. Have NPCs that give them intelligently laid out status reports. The tyrant emperors of waring states china didn't have a magical birds-eye-view of the battle field(though we can give the players something like that with orbiting satellites, but it'll be limited and cost money). I'd think of it more of a command simulator than an RTS.

Eve is on 1 server. To have hundreds, if not thousands of "planitary NPC wars" would cause sooooo much lag no one could play. i think it is likely we will get the ability to teraform and land in surface stations, but im sure the only combat will be the idea of orbital bombardment brought up earlyer.

if NPCs were going to be used it would probably be small scale tactical forces of militants etc. This would also give more of a use for them.Very Happy
