Originally by: Ruah Piskonit i agree with one of the previous posters - a few years ago I would have told you (and did tell friends) that this game would be around for awhile and how great it was to have started it so early (ala 04) but today I am not so sure.
Its not just that Incarna was such a huge drain on resorces that could have better been used in updating ship models (pretty easy task tbh - hell you can get a lot of the community to do it for free) really investing in the things that CSM has suggested to them, working on FW, PI, 0.0, Moongoo, and a whole host of things that have come our way since the begining. And while the begining was a lot clunkier and akward, it was also just as complicated and simple at the same time.
Much like wow - which I played from the first week till Nec (right before BE), before server transfers and all that junk. It was fun, competative community on Arthas (EST/US) server (o/ Aurora/BGC). If I returned, it would be like playing a new game - except I would miss the old one.
I suspect the same here.
Oh I don't know, I mean I just returned from a fairly long absence and really Incarna aside which really to me is kind of a test pilot for an expansion rather than an expansion itself most of the stuff that has been added is really interesting and fun. The game still has the same deamenor, their is a kind of progression of events that build on its mystique and while ya if I had it my way I would definitly alter some things, all and all its as good a game as it ever was. I would love to see for example the Deamos return as a usable ship for example. I would love to see more selection in the frigate line, finding a way to make frigate piloting a worthwhile profession to persue. I would personally love to see the elimination of BPO's from the game. But all that said, I don't see the current situation as being so dire. Certainly undesirable, Incarna definitily has a lot of problems and I'm a bit mystified about the thinking behind it, and in particular what purpose or goal it has in mind for the game. All and all though I think its still a great game, I feel the urge to play daily and I'm rarely ever bored.
I think part of the issue with Eve is that it has a community of players that has played this game a lot. Unlike many games Eve has a real requirement to log in. If your in an alliance fighting wars, or running a corp, participating in the market trading.. all those things require you to log in daily, its a must or you stand to loose a great deal. That can take its toll on a player, I often feel with Eve that "I have to play" even though I might not directly want to. Which is what I think drives a lot of newer corps run by older players to create gameplay situations that are more situational. Pirate corps for example have a considerably small "requirement" to play than say a 0.0 alliance corp trying to defend its space. Its definitly not a pick up game. As such I think a lot of people already burned out on the game in general find greater fault with some of the hiccups at CCP in recent days. Far more than someone like me for example fresh from an extended leave. For me I look at the situation and just say "eh" and I login and play the game and enjoy it.

If, as a lot of you predict, this game is dying, and won't be around in 10 years because of CCP, would you, when CCP finally dies, raise money to buy EVE from CCP to prolong it's life (and possibly finally work on what's important again)?
Or would it be better to create a new (and perfect) space MMO from the ground up, using the things we've learned from EVE? --- "A fool flatters himself, a wise man flatters the fool."

I highly doubt it I think eve has reached its peak now and from now on out itll start to loose players and 10 yeras time from now it may still be running but you would probably see the server have only 5k players online and most of which will probably be bots

Reality doesn't work like that. There is no perfect game that avoids all issues by starting from a clean slate. Same companies make newer versions of their games all the time and many of them are worse than their original games in many aspects. EVE gets new things added all the time and old stuff gets reworked, but there is always things that CCP manages to **** up each time. The fact is that if you can't fix the issues you have now, you won't be able to fix the issues that pop up in your new game. The lessons learned from EVE are being applied to improve EVE and to avoid repeating the same mistakes with new games. There is no need to start from nothing to take advantage of those lessons.
The other big issue is that to make a new EVE from a clean slate would take close to a decade to develop without providing any income. That simply isn't going to happen, so you would get a bare bones game that just gets developed over time and after 6-7 years might have all the things that EVE has now. That is a bad choice when you have the option to rework and develop your existing game instead, that provides continous income and you won't risk splitting your playerbase. In addition to that your new perfect space MMO will in all likelyhood be crap compared what EVE will be after those same 6-7 years of continous development.
You also might as well get used to the idea, that if CCP kills EVE it's dead and buried for good. CCP is unlikely to sell it's IP. EVE also relies on the single server design and large population to make it what it is. All half assed community attempts to copy what the current EVE has can't succeed in achieving the same thing and propably won't even be worth playing for long if at all. For good or bad it's either CCP or nothing.

Either the game will be polished, balanced and finished whilst keeping a stable community.
Or ...
After the taste of having their own game in the console market, they may just milk out what they can from Eve whilst preparing to leave the game for what it is.

Depends, just because bitter vets might not like the future of EVE, doesn't mean new players won't.
If CCP decides to give what people are asking for, then the game will thrive along with it's older players.
Or they can go their current route, which will drive away old players, but may attract a new crowd. (Like kids from Battlefield Heroes who enjoy spending their allowance on virtual items. )

Well there are other space mmos that came before Eve and no doubt given its success their is certainly a new market to fill in which competition could thrive. The problem is that Eve online is truely a niche product unlike any other, I'm not sure their are many developers other than indie developers that would even attempt to capture a market with such a very hard to please audiance. I mean Eve Online is a spectacular, truely revolutionary game, nothing even comes close to it out their, yet here we are on the forums complaining about it and acting like some dramatic doomsday end is coming.
Truth is that Eve is a strong game, fills a niche for an audiance that was created in Eve and frankly as an Eve player from the day I touched Eve every other MMO I have tried has been rated as "Not as good as Eve". CCP has created a new standard which modern MMO's in current development aren't even trying to compete with. Right now developers are still trying to figuire out how to tap into that elusive World Of Warcraft market, a game which seems to have fame and strong following for yet to be rationally explained reason. At least to me.
CCP has some fixing to do here. They need some good press for a change and above all else they seriously need to start listening to the community representatives who, if you took the time to listen to either in postings on in particular in Eve radio conversations clearly have their thumb on the pulse of Eve more so than anyone I have ever heard speak. These guys really are the voice of the players and as a company if you are going to make all the effort to create such an organization perhaps you should take advantage of the information they provide, because its worth real money as oppossed to Aurra or whatever hell they are calling that poop for a currency they invented.
Suffice to say, in conclusion that no Eve is not going anywhere and yes, CCP has ****ed up. As the old customer service saying goes when you screw up its time to fess up and dress up. Reading Hilmars (not sure about the spelling) internal letter that was leaked its clear to me that his method of thinking is based on an idea, or concept if you will that has always worked in the past, that being that the players will ***** but they will stay. I think like the captain of the Titanic his experiance is working against him in this case, and in fact players instead are speaking with their wallets. I have taken a good look at the numbers CCP has released and have to admit although I was initially skeptical about the persumed exodus of players, having been in the game the last few days its become very evident that their is some real basis for this. It really does appear that people are quite ****ed, quite united in their frustration and in fact are speaking with their wallets. A result I don't think our Icelandic friends are expecting and not suprising since it has never happened before.
The times are a changing in Eve, thats for sure and I think CCP probobly will eventually come around and change with them.

Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 09/08/2011 12:59:53 The MMO world is full of WoW clones, every new MMO is also a WoW clone, some with fancier graphics, more instancing, more scripted quests etc..
.. and there is EVE Online. I don't see why the game should dissappear and if you are really looking forward to EVE dying then the only games left for you to play would be the WoW clones.

I'd like to think that EVE will still be around in ten years time, it's already something of a classic in MMO terms. Assuming that CCP stick with it, I can see it out-living WoD and the new-fangled stuffs that CCP are "investing" in!

Yes, it has a small number of dedicated players.
The thing is, though, that all Everquest needs to continue operations is a small server.
EVE Online requires a beefier server, as almost all of the calculations are done server side. So keeping EVE Online alive will cost more money than keeping EQ alive. ----------

Will Eve still exist in 10 years?
I hope so.
When I first started, one of my thoughts was "I wonder how long this game will last?" Not because of anything wrong with Eve, but just an assumption that most games die within a few years.
However, a few games seem to have some exceptional longevity. Eve could, in theory, be around for decades.
Nothing prevents CCP from doing a ground up re-write of the code while keeping existing characters.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

I actually think the game will be doing really well in 10 years.
I think CCP will fix faction war plexxing and their subscription numbers will skyrocket. Fixed fw will provide lots of exciting solo and small scale pvp action that is so very rare now. It will attract many old and new players who think eve is currently a bit slow and boring.
I just don't know when that will happen.

This game was designed to go on for decades. You know why they have a clone grade at 450mil sp right. Would take you about 30 or 40 years to max out the sp on a vet from 2003. |
