Er no, hopefully MT and p2w free, alive and kicking, with tons of new ships to a$$-plode in
Or dead and buried, fondly remembered for its gutsy and unique concept of risk based gameplay, for generations to come, before it gets corrupted by said MT and p2w

At this point in the game, one would imagine a well polished space game, and maybe a half working WiS. But it is clear EVE is not the future of CCP, they have demonstrated that through action, not words.
My sub is up soon, between this account and my mains. A total of 8 years of eve down the drain.
Had such high hopes, but with the lack of response from CCP with there latest crapppy expansion. It is very clear EVE is now just a beta platform for what they have in the future |

1-2 years ago i would have said YES unconditionally.
But now? I don't know, there is no MT game that every survived close to 10 years. The pattern of MT is always the same, saturation/new items till its totally ****ed up. FtP somewhat mitigates that effect, as you prolong the life of such a game by using freeloaders as cannon fodder for the paying customers. But thats nothing that lasts long.
EVE is not FtP, so this can go downhill fast, very fast once saturation of vanity items occurs and they ponder the idea of PtW items (they already do). |

Very clever . The entire MMO genre is at most around 16 years old (Meridian 59). There are only a handful of MMOs older than 10 years and the concept of microtransaction-based payment schemes for MMOs isn't even close to 10 years old. It's only in the past few years that western MMOs have begun including microtransactions and free-to-play has started to gain traction.
I think sometimes we forget just how young this industry is. |

I predict in 10 years time Blizzard will have purchased EVE and tailoring will be added as a skill.
Also, you can keep your stuff but will have to fly to the nearest interstellar ship graveyard to reclaim your pod. And you suffer 10 min pod sickness. |

Yea, well, the question was for 10 years
Nah, there exist 5years MT games, just look at them, its the same pattern. If they didn't go FtP, noone would play them. Its a shortterm concept for ppl who don't want to invest months/years into a game.
The sad part is not that MT games exist, its that the industry feels the need to kill of the alternatives to force ppl into MT games. |

Not to be picky, but could you name a few? I've only written about MMOs for a living for the last three and half years so I'm probably not very familiar with any big news from before then. The oldest microtransaction-supported MMO in the west that I'm aware of is when Maple Story came to north america in 2005, and I'm not even sure if they started the microtransactions there until 2006-2007. I just remember people being very surprised in 2007 when they turned a huge profit in NA on microtransactions.
Up until just a few years ago, microtransaction-based payments were very much something the asian market latched onto while we stuck with the subscription model. And honestly, I'm not convinced that any data from the Asian market can really be used to extrapolate a trajectory in the European or American market. |

As you work in the industry you will know how to do research, and yes, even in that list you will find a few names before 2006 that would qualify as "games that had promise"...now look where they are.
MT concept is nothing new. Whats new is that they try double-milking AAA titles now, THATS new. |

Cheers for the list, can't believe I hadn't seen that before! It does sort of prove my point though that a lot of the games trying to do this as early as 2003 that weren't Asian flopped or had very niche appeal. The main issue here is that western MMO players have only recently started accepting cash shops in games and the idea that free-to-play games can be just as high in quality as subscription games. And by recently I really do mean 2007/2008 onward.
The gradual change in perception over the last few years is a trend I've seen develop first-hand in the comments at Massively. It's pretty funny to look back at articles on free to play MMOs from 2008 and see the sheer hatred for them while today people play the **** out of them. We're at the point now where they're so accepted that not only do free to play games supported by cash shops survive, they routinely draw in millions of players and produce a ****load more money than subscription games of the same development caliber. The market today is so different to the market five or ten years ago that data from that time can't really be of much use in extrapolating a future trajectory. The games industry moves ridiculously quickly. |

As I've posted elsewhere I hope it will end up like a modern, sophisticated, true "sandbox" RPG, electronic version of Traveller (in an Eve Universe).
However, sadly, I believe Eve is dying and will not exist in 10 years time.
EDIT: CCP have talked about Eve being around in 80 years time. I (rather generously) give it 80 weeks.

It might still be around.
It will basically be in its current apocrypha state (as nothing is ever going to change since then) but with more incarna features, to those who spend no AUR it will basically be the same as it is now (except you wont be able to toggle it off like everyone does now) and if you spend some AUR you can interact with other characters, buy even more clothes and pets and shops/bars/????
There might be a new ship model by then in the form of a unique ship or a remodelled incursus or a competition winner one, but this will only be available for AUR. |

IMO it's extremely unlikely that this game will be around in 10 years.
With extremely disciplined management it might be possible to keep the codebase maintainable for another 10 years (and Carbon certainly helps in that regard) but customers' preferences and expectations change and at some point it is just easier to start from scratch than to defend massive gameplay changes against the expectations of over 9000 bittervets.
The MMOs released to the market today are different from the MMOs released in 2000.
Blizzard is putting a lot of effort into keeping WoW competitive (e.g. the fancy phasing approach showcased by the latest patch) and they still face huge criticism about falling behind gameplay-wise compared to the "next-gen" MMOs. That being said, I remember watching a friend leveling a WoW character in 2006 and I experienced it myself just recently and the changes in those five years are pretty huge (and I am not sure I would tolerate having to play the way he did 5 years ago).
If anything the "old" EVE was much more modern than the current EVE - players were more able to leave their mark on the world (ever asked yourself what monument the protesters were shooting in Jita?) and were more directly involved in an ever evolving storyline (while now we have a war between the empires that may not end otherwise FW becomes obsolete, Sansha Kuvakei who may not be defeated or grow tired of his assault or Incursions become obsolete, a Sleeper story that will not evolve unless CCP allocates resources to a w-space overhaul, ...). Using very rough means (human actors, much manual work by GMs and developers) and only possible because of the very small playerbase CCP had initially managed to do sth that today's "next-generation" MMOs are trying hard to achieve.
I am also skeptical how long the "butterfly effect" can maintain its "american dream"-like qualities in EVE - "everybody a hero" is silly but "even more of a grunt than in my day job" does not win subscribers.
However, I expect CCP to develop EVE into a larger franchise and I expect to see an EVE-branded MMO on the market in 10 years.

No. This latest outbreak of rage displayed one thing: the community is ready for a real competitor. Perpetuum isn't gonna be that competitor, and isn't very good. Infinity has potential, but seems to be much closer to Vaporware than a working project.
What EVE really needs is a dedicated effort by CCP to rebuild major aspects of the game. But, if you believe that EVE is on the decline - it may not be worth the cost, which would explain why CCP hasn't put this effort in. |

I joined EVE in 2010 and am pretty thrilled with what I've seen so far - and CCP's visions for the future look pretty good to me.
I just hope EVE players can one day land their ships on planets and get out and walk around. Perhaps construct subterranean (or submarine?) hangars - with every ship, mineral and weapon physically represented (icons do get pretty tiresome). If DUST 514 and EVE could ever be the same game I'd be over the moon.
I'd like EVE to feel more physical. I'd like to be able to get out of the pod and walk around the ship, conducting repairs etc. - Maybe man a turret - take passengers. Perhaps allow for joysticks? (Just make it less point-and-click). eg. Flying through planets makes me feel like the planet is a graphic rather than a real object. Warps should plot paths around physical objects rather than fly through them.
If EVE can't provide these things, I guess I'll get tired of it and find something that does. But I think CCP are doing a pretty good job at the mo.

It took CCP around 10 years to develop EVE.. You have to see the early alpha screenshots where everything is 2D and there is no 3D engine yet, to understand that EVE is/was a unique succes because the initial CCP devs put real love into the development of the game.
ATM its obvious EVE gets no love from CCP, but I know for a fact that they can make and keep EVE to be the ultimate space MMO out there for many years, if they do put efford into it.

Right, cause they must be homosexual to be vampires.
The last non-homo vampire was Dracula as originally written. Folk vampires sometimes also fall into the non-homo group. Modern vampire fictions are rooted in homosexuality (or at best, bi-sexuality), down to their very core (Anne Rice's work influenced the modern vampire to be a character rather than a vague idea, and most of her work reads like gay prno.)
But no, EVE won't be around in 10 years. Assuming CCP doesn't fold entirely in the next 2 years, what will be around is a janitor who keeps the lights on. As long as there are the 300-400 subscribers who forgot to cancel their accounts paying to keep the power bill and the internet bill paid, it won't be shut down. But it won't be EVE either.

1: We can have Nex store for everything :D ...or at least vanity items, which would include rainbow drakes, gold-painted ammo, corp medal's, logo's made through the nex store (yes, changing and creating these creates too much of a demand on the databases... need to get more money to support the databases).

I'm often confused by people who either claim Eve is or has failed as a game because of recent events and how the last 8 years is wasted faith and effort in the company and game. This game has out right rocked for at least 6 of the 8 years its been out and has been growing in population the entire time. The time spent in this game has been awsome for me and their is no question in my mind that Eve will go down in history as one of the best MMO's of all time regardless of what happens from this point forward. In fact it already is one of the best MMO's of all time, a fact nothing CCP can do from this point forward to change that. That legacy is as secure as solid gold.
That said I suspect 10 years from now this game will be reduced to a small cult following for no other reason than no MMO can suistain a state of growth like it has enjoyed.

i agree with one of the previous posters - a few years ago I would have told you (and did tell friends) that this game would be around for awhile and how great it was to have started it so early (ala 04) but today I am not so sure.
Its not just that Incarna was such a huge drain on resorces that could have better been used in updating ship models (pretty easy task tbh - hell you can get a lot of the community to do it for free) really investing in the things that CSM has suggested to them, working on FW, PI, 0.0, Moongoo, and a whole host of things that have come our way since the begining. And while the begining was a lot clunkier and akward, it was also just as complicated and simple at the same time.
Much like wow - which I played from the first week till Nec (right before BE), before server transfers and all that junk. It was fun, competative community on Arthas (EST/US) server (o/ Aurora/BGC). If I returned, it would be like playing a new game - except I would miss the old one.
I suspect the same here.

Oh I don't know, I mean I just returned from a fairly long absence and really Incarna aside which really to me is kind of a test pilot for an expansion rather than an expansion itself most of the stuff that has been added is really interesting and fun. The game still has the same deamenor, their is a kind of progression of events that build on its mystique and while ya if I had it my way I would definitly alter some things, all and all its as good a game as it ever was. I would love to see for example the Deamos return as a usable ship for example. I would love to see more selection in the frigate line, finding a way to make frigate piloting a worthwhile profession to persue. I would personally love to see the elimination of BPO's from the game. But all that said, I don't see the current situation as being so dire. Certainly undesirable, Incarna definitily has a lot of problems and I'm a bit mystified about the thinking behind it, and in particular what purpose or goal it has in mind for the game. All and all though I think its still a great game, I feel the urge to play daily and I'm rarely ever bored.
I think part of the issue with Eve is that it has a community of players that has played this game a lot. Unlike many games Eve has a real requirement to log in. If your in an alliance fighting wars, or running a corp, participating in the market trading.. all those things require you to log in daily, its a must or you stand to loose a great deal. That can take its toll on a player, I often feel with Eve that "I have to play" even though I might not directly want to. Which is what I think drives a lot of newer corps run by older players to create gameplay situations that are more situational. Pirate corps for example have a considerably small "requirement" to play than say a 0.0 alliance corp trying to defend its space. Its definitly not a pick up game. As such I think a lot of people already burned out on the game in general find greater fault with some of the hiccups at CCP in recent days. Far more than someone like me for example fresh from an extended leave. For me I look at the situation and just say "eh" and I login and play the game and enjoy it.

If, as a lot of you predict, this game is dying, and won't be around in 10 years because of CCP, would you, when CCP finally dies, raise money to buy EVE from CCP to prolong it's life (and possibly finally work on what's important again)?
Or would it be better to create a new (and perfect) space MMO from the ground up, using the things we've learned from EVE? --- "A fool flatters himself, a wise man flatters the fool."

Reality doesn't work like that. There is no perfect game that avoids all issues by starting from a clean slate. Same companies make newer versions of their games all the time and many of them are worse than their original games in many aspects. EVE gets new things added all the time and old stuff gets reworked, but there is always things that CCP manages to **** up each time. The fact is that if you can't fix the issues you have now, you won't be able to fix the issues that pop up in your new game. The lessons learned from EVE are being applied to improve EVE and to avoid repeating the same mistakes with new games. There is no need to start from nothing to take advantage of those lessons.
The other big issue is that to make a new EVE from a clean slate would take close to a decade to develop without providing any income. That simply isn't going to happen, so you would get a bare bones game that just gets developed over time and after 6-7 years might have all the things that EVE has now. That is a bad choice when you have the option to rework and develop your existing game instead, that provides continous income and you won't risk splitting your playerbase. In addition to that your new perfect space MMO will in all likelyhood be crap compared what EVE will be after those same 6-7 years of continous development.
You also might as well get used to the idea, that if CCP kills EVE it's dead and buried for good. CCP is unlikely to sell it's IP. EVE also relies on the single server design and large population to make it what it is. All half assed community attempts to copy what the current EVE has can't succeed in achieving the same thing and propably won't even be worth playing for long if at all. For good or bad it's either CCP or nothing.

Either the game will be polished, balanced and finished whilst keeping a stable community.
Or ...
After the taste of having their own game in the console market, they may just milk out what they can from Eve whilst preparing to leave the game for what it is.

Depends, just because bitter vets might not like the future of EVE, doesn't mean new players won't.
If CCP decides to give what people are asking for, then the game will thrive along with it's older players.
Or they can go their current route, which will drive away old players, but may attract a new crowd. (Like kids from Battlefield Heroes who enjoy spending their allowance on virtual items. )

Well there are other space mmos that came before Eve and no doubt given its success their is certainly a new market to fill in which competition could thrive. The problem is that Eve online is truely a niche product unlike any other, I'm not sure their are many developers other than indie developers that would even attempt to capture a market with such a very hard to please audiance. I mean Eve Online is a spectacular, truely revolutionary game, nothing even comes close to it out their, yet here we are on the forums complaining about it and acting like some dramatic doomsday end is coming.
Truth is that Eve is a strong game, fills a niche for an audiance that was created in Eve and frankly as an Eve player from the day I touched Eve every other MMO I have tried has been rated as "Not as good as Eve". CCP has created a new standard which modern MMO's in current development aren't even trying to compete with. Right now developers are still trying to figuire out how to tap into that elusive World Of Warcraft market, a game which seems to have fame and strong following for yet to be rationally explained reason. At least to me.
CCP has some fixing to do here. They need some good press for a change and above all else they seriously need to start listening to the community representatives who, if you took the time to listen to either in postings on in particular in Eve radio conversations clearly have their thumb on the pulse of Eve more so than anyone I have ever heard speak. These guys really are the voice of the players and as a company if you are going to make all the effort to create such an organization perhaps you should take advantage of the information they provide, because its worth real money as oppossed to Aurra or whatever hell they are calling that poop for a currency they invented.
Suffice to say, in conclusion that no Eve is not going anywhere and yes, CCP has ****ed up. As the old customer service saying goes when you screw up its time to fess up and dress up. Reading Hilmars (not sure about the spelling) internal letter that was leaked its clear to me that his method of thinking is based on an idea, or concept if you will that has always worked in the past, that being that the players will ***** but they will stay. I think like the captain of the Titanic his experiance is working against him in this case, and in fact players instead are speaking with their wallets. I have taken a good look at the numbers CCP has released and have to admit although I was initially skeptical about the persumed exodus of players, having been in the game the last few days its become very evident that their is some real basis for this. It really does appear that people are quite ****ed, quite united in their frustration and in fact are speaking with their wallets. A result I don't think our Icelandic friends are expecting and not suprising since it has never happened before.
The times are a changing in Eve, thats for sure and I think CCP probobly will eventually come around and change with them.

Yes, it has a small number of dedicated players.
The thing is, though, that all Everquest needs to continue operations is a small server.
EVE Online requires a beefier server, as almost all of the calculations are done server side. So keeping EVE Online alive will cost more money than keeping EQ alive. ----------

Will Eve still exist in 10 years?
I hope so.
When I first started, one of my thoughts was "I wonder how long this game will last?" Not because of anything wrong with Eve, but just an assumption that most games die within a few years.
However, a few games seem to have some exceptional longevity. Eve could, in theory, be around for decades.
Nothing prevents CCP from doing a ground up re-write of the code while keeping existing characters.

I actually think the game will be doing really well in 10 years.
I think CCP will fix faction war plexxing and their subscription numbers will skyrocket. Fixed fw will provide lots of exciting solo and small scale pvp action that is so very rare now. It will attract many old and new players who think eve is currently a bit slow and boring.
I just don't know when that will happen.
