Edited by: Opis on 12/07/2011 11:24:34 Hi a few questions regarding gate guns and tanking.
I know the guns will cycle between ships, so the more ships you use the less overall damage Received. But are there other tactics to tanking gate guns? For example how well do they track, and is it possible to orbit them and speed tank? Also what sort of range do they have, do they hit out to a sniper gang range at 70k + ?
As you may have gathered I have no experience with tanking gate guns so any tips or info will be apreciated.
Many thanks.

If i remember correctly gate guns max range is 150km.
Buffer tank and huge DPS is how to counter gate guns - kill the stuff b4 the gate guns+tehm can kill you. and if you are reading this you have reached the signature without noticing. |

Gate guns have perfect tracking. Usually that spells death for little frigates. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

Thx for info. Especially the range and tracking comments.

I have managed to kill a bomber using a gank/buffer Slicer on a gate and made it out alive (albeit in flames), so I wouldn't worry too much about them to be honest.
PS: The 150km range is from the centre point of the object they are guarding if I recall .. so 150km from gate centre.

You could get a heavy interdictor or a well tanked faction cruiser with a sensor booster.
You could also put buffer on a frigate and support it with logistics and hope you don't get alpha'ed, or if you are cheap...
With moderate armor tanking skills you can get a Maller to dual rep tank gateguns for as long as you have cap charges. As long as you have ships ready to take up secondary tackle and webs you are golden.
[Maller, PVP Dual Rep Fast Tackle] Damage Control II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Medium Armor Repairer II Medium Armor Repairer II Adaptive Nano Plating II
Warp Disruptor II Sensor Booster II, Scan Resolution Medium Capacitor Booster II, Navy Cap Booster 800
Dual 180mm AutoCannon II, EMP M Dual 180mm AutoCannon II, EMP M Dual 180mm AutoCannon II, EMP M Dual 180mm AutoCannon II, EMP M Dual 180mm AutoCannon II, EMP M [empty high slot]
Medium Auxiliary Nano Pump I Medium Auxiliary Nano Pump I Medium Nanobot Accelerator I
This fit tanks about 483. Gateguns do about 352 with greater emphasis on kin/therm. With imperfect but decent skills you can easily outtank gateguns. It does need some micromanagement but it is fun watching your armor go up and down and bleed into structure every now and then...

That is correct, 150km from the object the guns are guarding.
Frigs under gate fire is risky business, though I've ganked a few frigs and haulers in my Comet that way for the lulz.
You can point something up really quick for a few seconds without much trouble in a MSE frig, as long as you manage to warp before you get pointed back.

Range: 150km from the object they are guarding, not the gun.
Tracking speed: Concord style yes to tracking.
Scan resolution: Concord style yes to targeting.
EW immunity: Yes.
DPS: around 350-400 omni damage, a single rep BS can almost permatank them but not fully. If it's split with other ships it's no problem. Alternatively dual rep BC/cruisers can also more or less tank them although it will be trickier. Target selection is random and they change targets every 30s. They will give drones their fair share of attention. As such if you are alone in being GCC and pop 5 drones, each sentry gun has a 1 in 6 chance of targeting you and a 5 in 6 chance of going for a drone. The sentry guns are not linked and will attack different targets at times.
