So I ask this question more so out of curiosity then anything.
Have any of you been affected by events in real life from your eve addiction?
Such as wife leaving you etc, losing your job from taking to much time off work to play eve?
Weekends are now spent indoors playing eve etc.

More people have been affected by this game than you would ever believe.
Plus it is a haven for disaffected damaged people.
And a big hello to all the bitter middle aged divorced Dads who play this game to run away from their soul crushing existance.

What is "real life"?
Seriously though I can honestly say in the almost one month that I've been playing this game I haven't really noticed any changes in my offline life, EVE is the kind of game (so far atleast) that a person can play as casually or constantly as they want to, then again all I really do is solo stuff atm so who knows how things will be if I ever meet other people to play with, maybe its still too early to comment one way or another. Yes this game has had a RL impact.
I no longer seek to scam or steal from people in real life, or attack strangers for no reason when they are in the ghetto away from police protection. I also get to stab friends in the back which I couldn't do in RL because I would rightfully be beaten up for it.

My real life has more effect on my EVE life than the other way around. It's all about how you prioritize.
..of course, I don't have kids, a wife, or any thing to sidetrack really. My job, (all of them), is more important than a video game for obvious reasons, but even I stay up to ridiculous hours doing this or that, and whatever time it is, I get up in the morning and go to work. Even a little tired, I'm not much affected in my performance.
EVE is a hobby. I'm sure some people have issues with married life and their hobbies not meshing, but that goes for pretty much any hobby. It all depends on the relationship in question. One reason I'm still single is, hobbies or not, I haven't the tolerance for someone trying to rule me. I have deleted and cleared my signature 7 times and it still won't go away. |

okay i got to ask you
aren't you concerned that you are calling it "real life" ? because this sounds a bit redundant and everything
i think its called "life" and if you call it "real life" you kind of giving away the fact you have issue right there
as to the questions:
Such as wife leaving you etc, - why would you marry somebody who does not love computer games, that is just asking for trouble
losing your job from taking to much time off work to play eve? - you can take time of work to play eve? what kind of jobs you guys have
Weekends are now spent indoors playing eve etc. - do not tell me you go outside, case you have not notice there is a giant nuclear reaction thing going on that will harm you if you expose yourself to it, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun you can also check this out by going outside, but dont worry, it is only there half of the time so you can go to the store and stuff |

Its about how you manage your life, balance it with Eve and also about wether you are beaten into submission by your woman and not allowed to play a computer game too much. Works just fine for me as I dont fear my wife, and she understands that my time is my time. She does what she wants, I do what I want and yet we still have time for a little sex :) Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing. |

Already spend my weekends indoors before playing EvE and probably will long after. Don't see what's so great about this outside thingy people keep talking about.
No wife to leave me, then again at my age that'd be quite disturbing.
No job either, student for now and my studies are going well. Can't say they suffer from me playing EvE too much, if anything playing EvE helps as it keeps me thinking in terms of numbers and variables.
But I'm a solitary guy, EvE or no EvE doesn't really change much. If I weren't spending my time on EvE I'd be reading books on my own, watching movies on my own or some other solitary hobby. |

Don't have that problem anymore.. When EQ first came out in 1998, I believe it was, I was addicted to that game. Lost my girlfriend over it (although, to be fair, we probably weren't going to work out anyway). Passed up on doing lots of things because I had to go on a raid or whatever.
Once I got free of the EQ addiction, I've been very careful to avoid letting that happen again. I play Eve in my spare time. Probably could be doing more productive things at times, but hey, Eve is my way to relax a bit and shoot people in the face. |

I think there's been too many occations when i "had" to stay up defending that POS, or i couldn't possibly do that thing i said i'd do, because something very important is happening in EvE which i just "have" to deal with. We've had a fair few massive rows over things like that.
But she knows its one of my loves, and understand that i will be playing till my dying day so i think we've reached an understanding of sorts. I just gotta be careful not to overdo it. |

That may be true, but you can fit a faction warfare suitable rifter with about one hours work using one of those same rifters, so I don't think your implication is accurate at all.
Not only that, but you can make the money you need with only a few hours of skill training, and some market involvement that might amount to 10 minutes a day? |

Weekends are now spent indoors playing eve etc.
Admittedly when I played WoW back in the day (pre expansions) I was obsessed. I played day and night, sometimes all day. I neglected a social life, the state of my home, hygiene and even my job performance suffered. Muster all the classic stereotypes you like about WoW players, it's all true. For a time I was THAT guy.
The expansions destroyed all love I had for that game and I quickly latched onto another MMO, any MMO. I found EvE and I didn't go back to that obsessive behavior again.
There were no raids. No sleepless nights trying to down the last boss that everyone in the group expects me to. No quota on potions to craft for the raid party. No schedule to call in sick for.
This game allows for character progression to continue regardless if I'm at the keyboard or not. A fact that I greatly appreciate. I can still earn money and train skills offline and living a normal life. Actually I play less EVE than I would like, often I just don't log in because I'm too tired after work and EVE, after all, is hard. Generally I sometimes play every available minute for a week, probably 30 hours or more, other times I don't play at all for a whole week.
The main effect on my real life is that EVE competes with sports. During the week I usually try to go to the gym after work. When I go to the gym, there remains little or no time for EVE. If I want to play EVE, I cannot go to the gym. Sometimes the gym wins, sometimes EVE. On weekends I have two opportunities to play badminton at my club, and since both training sessions are in EVE prime time, this also competes with EVE -.-
EVE may also prevent me from chasing after women. Most weekends I'm too lazy to go out, except to a pub with male friends, because I can play EVE instead. In this regard I sometimes regret that I picked EVE... online communities are a great way to meet a partner, but EVE is really bad for this unless you're gay It's a pity that so few women play real games. . |

My life was a mess before i started playing EVE. Well i was into WoW for like 5 years. My university was not going well, as my love affairs too. Didnt have job and because all of that the atmosphere within my family was not OK at all. When i started playing EVE suddenly i had huge amount of spare time. No more must raids, no more must farm consumables, dailies, reputations and all other things in order to be competitive and have a fixed raid spot. Also EVE had my brain involved lot, lot more and i think i might have been exercising substantially. Since than i moved to another university. I am one exam away to finish it, have a job and a wonderful girlfriend.
Dunno if it was because of EVE but fact is that i have lot more of spare time, not scheduled events, and a game that actually puts my brain to work. |

For my part i have quite a different point of view on the topic :
Why a successfull life should always be to have a boyfriend/girlfriend, to get married, have a family, a very busy social life, an important job and a huge credit on the car and the house ? We all are different and we all have different ways to be happy. If someone is happy playing EVE all the time, living alone and having no job, in what is it badder than another source of happyness ? I hate normality, it's the worst dictature. |

Honestly, yes. Eve has impacted my life a huge deal.
First, it made it possible to meet people half way around the world that I wouldn't have other wise. My three best mates who are now family to me, I met through EVE and even visited one for over five weeks this year in Canada and it was a real blast! The same person, I even started a business with in 2007.
Eve, and more importantly, the people in it, have helped me through some really trying times and I will forever be grateful for that and in a large way, contributed to which path I took in my career and in my life. Even though by reading the EVE forums these days, you'd think we were just a bunch of whining immature idiots, but the truth is, the most intellectual and smart people I know, I know through EVE. <3 Gothie |

While I don't think EVE in particular has have a negative impact on my life. Not counting a single burnout that lasted more than a year. However the internet and computer games in general, have had an overall negative impact on my life. Not in the losing wife/kids sense, but still it have perhaps distanced me a little, and sometime I catch myself playing EVE for an extended evening, while I could have been using that time with the family.
Then again, I get a lot of positive things from EVE, balancing these against each other is complicated. |

No... not yet... You have to make "them" paint the entire department pink and then you're entitled to present that comment again.

I've quit jobs I've had over the years six times in order to go to FanFest, or do Alliance Tournaments when holidays have been refused by companies I've worked for. Four of the six times they have called me up when I've gotten home and sheepishly asked me if I'll come back to work.
Coupled with that, I met and got together with the most awesome woman in the world playing Eve, who's a hardcore gamer, is gorgeous, kicks ass and has an awesome sense of humour.
I've also had the opportunity to meet epic people, get involved with epic projects and organise awesome Eve player gatherings in London, one of which is occuring next week and has a 150+ attendance list plus a dozen devs showing up.
Eve has also given me an appreciation of foreign culture, let me see the world from hundreds of different perspectives, opened my eyes to differences in custom from country to country and proved to me that Iceland is the most awesome country on Earth.
When I started playing Eve I was 18 years old and was a shy, quiet engineering student who wouldn't even consider speaking out with opinion and was scared to even make a presentation in front of ten fellow trainees.
A little under 10 years later I've been on stage in front of thousands of people at multiple FanFests, as well as being watched on webcast by tens of thousands. I've been a part of live broadcasts watched by tens of thousands when working on Eve-TV and have hosted player gatherings and stood up and spoke in front of hundreds of people in the same room.
I can't even remember how many countries I've flown and driven to, organising and attending player gatherings and getting to know Eve players.
Eve has had a massive positive influence on my life, and the only way you let your life get destroyed by any video game is if you're too thick headed and bone idle to keep control of it, take care of yourself, do things right and make the right calls at the right time.
In these cases it's not the game that's to blame, it's the lethargic, lazy, thick skulled idiot behind the keyboard and/or controller.

I follow the sales figures of Iceland's only hardware store and as they haven't spiked because of any huge pink paint order lately, your office can't be pink... Unless you have stealth manufactured your own pink paint or used pink nail polish to paint it as "project forever".... and I have to clarify that filling all the empty wall surfaces with Hello Kitty stickers doesn't count as "pink paint" - not even if they carry "I love CCP"-hearts in their hands and look really cute.
edit: Btw now you should know what you want for xmas .)

CCP Sunset wrote:From when I first started playing EVE I turned a lot of on-line friends into RL friends through alliance meet ups in the UK and a few FanFests. Had a couple of corpies visit and stay with me a few times and spent a few months travelling around Europe and the US visiting friends I made through EVE Online. I met my husband at FanFest, moved to Iceland, got a job at CCP and had several friends who I made through EVE at my wedding <3 I would say EVE has had quite a big impact on my life the last few years
That is impressive.
I guess it depends on the person a lot. Come to think of it, there certainly are a lot of people out there who, say with one meetup gathering or going through the wrong door, will end up in an alley with a needle stuck in their arm (probably around 72 hours ).
People who tend to fall from grace should know their limitations and avoid stuff.
Or as the saying goes, if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

I have met several friends that i'm sure i will have for life through eve. They range from the US through europe to asia and i have even managed to visit 3 or 4 of them in their home towns for a few beers. Even crashing on their sofas and planning big nights out! I stayed with one guy in Laramie and another in Cardiff. They have since left the game but i still keep in touch and on the 3rd im going to see 2 mates i met through eve in cardiff.
My GF hates me playing internet spaceships, but she just agreed to be my wife so things can't be that bad!!

My old girlfriend told me about her hot friend who liked groups. So I proposed a threesome. Answer: "How about you just do a onesome?" |
