Ok... just curious on how rich the people in Eve have become. If you are personally a billionaire... please sign and post here.
You need to have 1,000,000,000 or more isk... this does NOT include assests... isk ONLY.

Unless you need large amounts of isk for turnover on a regular basis, you would be an idiot to have 1bn lying around. Buy some BPOs and let the copies earn you money.

Or you could be an escrow junky waiting for a good deal to turn up (and they do turn up, fairly frequently in fact). I like how you assume anyone who has different market strategies is an idiot though

I think the point of having a LOT of money lying around instead of invested is that at some point you have WAY too much, and there's no reason to have more.

I have over a billion isk, but I don't keep them on my main. Imagine, buying a 750 mil shuttle or 10,000 rounds of ammo at 50,000 isk each.
And I think Lallante is right. It's not a good idea to just have it laying around--- reinvest it! I have a megathron and Apoc blueprint original and I leave them in the lab at all times making copies.
When I get 100 total, I put them on escrow for 100 mil and let some other person sell them off for profit of their own. That way, I never have to bother with it. 100 mil each month for doing pretty much nothing, not bad.
And then you can always invest in minerals. I have around 2.5 billion in low grade minerals--- if it's one thing I've learned since release, it's that low grades like pyrite and tritanium always have, and always will go up in value. In 4 or so months, sell them off for an extra third of what you payed for them. Free isk.

so instead of keeping your isk lying around you buy a bunch of low grade mins and hold onto it for four monthes then sell
so your still holding onto yur isk for monthes on end in mineral form.
none the difference IMO.

In eve isk gets you just about whatever you want.... SO,
lets take some advice from the richest man in the world and see what he does with all that "extra money"
Every last billion of Bill Gates' dollars aren't sitting in a personal checking account... they're in the stock market, or in a small business, or in a new product. It's all invested making interest. That way he can have more money.
One thing in money holds ALWAYS holds true. The more you have to invest the more it works for you. Take the guy with the bps as an example. He has an alt waiting for them to turn out 100 bpcs and then he sells them all. He never has to hunt. Never has to mine. Never has to do anything he doesn't wanna do accept wait. It's the golden point in eve everyone should strive to be at.

No isk is asset, what you are refering to is Fixed Assets. Fixed assets is something that is around more then a year and costs more then a few dollars. Did you know Accounts Receivable is an Asset as well. Really, some people should take an accounting course or two and learn what GAP means.
Oh, and stock is an equity and Capital is total value of all assets after minusing libilities. Other words, Net Worth.

I opperate under the principal that if I have more then 200mill I need to buy something.
Having isk just sitting in your account really doesn't do much for you. Having it makeing more for you does. Find something thats easy to maintian and make some isk and you'll be happy. Doesn't have to be a lot of isk, 'investments' that make a lot of isk typically require a lot of work. Rather buy some BPO's and copy them for instance, or have low end minerals waiting to be sold etc...

my good buddy diyonisis is right. but it's GAAP, not GAP
cash is just an asset class, defined as having perfect liquidity. the more you need liquidity, the more cash you have to hold.
if you don't know what that means, then just buy a raven bpo and research it for a month and resell. or buy faction loot or low-end mins, which are generally guaranteed to rise at the rate of inflation. with the way inflation is going, holding cash is a recepie for losing money. we're not just talking abotu missed opportunity.

The history and the billion, and why people from USA and Britain have mostly no clue
In mathematical right order:
million = 1.000.000 milliard = 1.000.000.000 billion = 1.000.000.000.000 trillion = 1.000.000.000.000.000
Why do thy say billion when thy should say milliard?
Cause some moron from overseas got it wrong, and most part of britains followed this example of pure stupidity. Its founded in economic, aka "the short ladder"
Who are the morons?
Only the Brits and the USA. Most civilisations count the billion as 10^12
Can we get rid of it?
yes, tendeces shows that even morons comes to the conlussion, abonding a term is stupid, and makes you look like a moron. so we may see the comback of the rightfull owner of the 10^9, the good old milliard

Edited by: Cartiff on 25/02/2005 00:03:03 I'm pretty sure this is the best place to beg for money
So, can i have some, my wife is driving me mad with factory bills and office rents, she loves the designer clothes and my bank manager is loving this... to be honest i think he might be having a thing with my wife, but shes got so much plastic in her now (from the frequent nips/tucks) that i don't want her anyway. Theres no love there.
My kids are great, pure diamonds, apart from the huge X-Instinct addictions, when their on a trip their pure angels, but when their gear gets low, its daddy who has to folk out.

My only small saving grace is the simple pleasures i get from the nice tea room lady in the local gallente station.
We enjoy the simple things in life, taking walks around the station, admiring the views, visiting the local exotic retailers and buying somethings for the small flat i have rented on the side for us.
Please, please help me, I can't take it anymore, all i need is a few mil to ease the burdon.

errr... What's the first line on a Balance sheet oh professor?
Bingo! CASH!
Cash is indeed an asset, a "current asset" in it's most liquid form.
Admittedly, this level of cash lying around not working for you could be seen as a waste, however withut further information, it is impossible to ascertain whether this asset is kept on hand to meet short term liabilities. We don't know the mechancis of cash flow in this instance.
Economics might not immediately educate you of this fact. I recommend an accounting class first.
Money used to purchase assets is not a capital item. Nope. It is an asset, which is then transformed into another asset during a transaction. Furthermore, stock is not a capital item if you are the investor. It is still an asset, and because it is not a physical object it is simply labelled as an "intangible asset". Stock is only a capital item when the company issues it to investors. It is a matter of perspective. Walmart issues stock as a capital item to fund it's activities, an investor purchases the stock as ain investment.
Walmart sees the stock as a capital item Investor sees the stock as an intangible asset.
Hope that helps clear up any misinformation.

tbh for any character over 6 months old a billion isn't particuarly difficult to get. It's just most people tend not to keep the money once they have it.
The sheer number of people in eve with access to that kind of earning potential is part of the problem with inflation imho.

1,000,000,000 = one thousand x one thousand squared = billion (bi = 2)

You get the idea.
Milliard is an old, imperial number, with about as nmuch relevance to the modern world as a groat.

1,000,000,000,000,000 = quadrillion (quad = 4)
1,000,000,000,000,000,000 = quintillion (quin = 5)
You get the idea.
Milliard is an old, imperial number, with about as nmuch relevance to the modern world as a groat.
Under the old system, would a thousand billion have been called a billiard?
1.000 = thousand 1.000.000 = million (10^(6*1)) 1.000.000.000 = milliard 1.000.000.000.000 = billion (10^(6*2)) 1.000.000.000.000.000 = billiard 1.000.000.000.000.000.000 = trillion (10^(6*3)) ....
then some silly american who couldn't count past 6 came around and messed up. add up the fact that it sounds better to be a billionair then a milliardair and suddenly all america thought that silly system was the correct one.
but then again it doesn't realy matter what system they use, as long as they don't try to force their system on the rest of the world. even worse when they try to explain their messed up system with fraud logic like you are trying to, jernau gurgeh

I make about a billion a week (with little or no effort) and I agree with Lallante that having that money just sitting in a wallet is a waste. I know people with several billion in their wallet and they've had that amount for quite a while. It just sits there waiting for them to loose a ship or need equipment.
I invest my money to make me even more money. I've finally gotten to a point in the game where I don't have to mine, hunt, or do anything simply because I need the money.

Broadly speaking, how do you do this? Trading? BPCs?
My aim is to get to a similar point where the money does the work for me but I'm still in the crazy spending stage right now.

There's a good explanation of the modern system here.
And it was the French who invented the modern system, not the Americans.
Also, the modern system is the one currently in international usage by mathematicians, scientists and economists (you will notice that the above link is to a UK academic site).
There are 10 sorts of people in the world - those who understand binary, and those who do not. |

F#@$ ALL GUYS!!@# !@$ !
IT WAS THE FRENCH
The English names for large numbers are coined from the Latin names for small numbers n by adding the ending -illion suggested by the name "million." Thus billion and trillion are coined from the Latin prefixes bi- (n = 2) and tri- (n = 3), respectively. In the American system for naming large numbers, the name coined from the Latin number n applies to the number 103n+3. In a system traditional in many European countries, the same name applies to the number 106n.
In particular, a billion is 10^9 = 1 000 000 000 in the American system and 10^12 = 1 000 000 000 000 in the European system. For 10^9, Europeans say "thousand million" or "milliard."
Although we describe the two systems today as American or European, both systems are actually of French origin. The French physician and mathematician Nicolas Chuquet (1445-1488) apparently coined the words byllion and tryllion and used them to represent 10^12 and 10^18, respectively, thus establishing what we now think of as the "European" system. However, it was also French mathematicians of the 1600's who used billion and trillion for 10^9 and 10^12, respectively. This usage became common in France and in America, while the original Chuquet nomenclature remained in use in Britain and Germany. The French decided in 1948 to revert to the Chuquet ("European") system, leaving the U.S. as the chief standard bearer for what then became clearly an American system.
In recent years, American usage has eroded the European system, particularly in Britain and to a lesser extent in other countries. This is primarily due to American finance, because Americans insist that $1,000,000,000 be called a billion dollars. In 1974, the government of Prime Minister Harold Wilson announced that henceforth "billion" would mean 10^9 and not 10^12 in official British reports and statistics. The Times of London style guide now defines "billion" as "one thousand million, not a million million."

Just cause you brits have rights to "founding" american language doens't mean you can also claim the meanings of clear and obvious latin routes. The original post by Jernau Gurgeh is correct and why when us americans and brits started greatly differing in dialects a natural porgression to aliviate confusion called for our favorite lingua franca. These roots are founded in a "dead" language, latin. So no it wasn't some stupid american who changed all of that it was a group of scientists and mathmaticians trying to create standards that would pervase through all dialects of english and even help out foreigners who barely speak any. The newer form of this is the metric system, which was created by brits. Anyhow now we have latin names for animals, plants, measurements, numbers... Why you ask? Because Latin is a common language in western culture and has been since the end of the Roman Empire. Historians like it because of that and the Roman Catholic church still uses it. Scientists wanted to be able to publish findings without having to CONSTANTLY explain measurements or terminology. So the modern forms of scientific classification, the metric system, and numbers are all rooted in latin with the idea that even if a reader is only marginally decent at reading any western language, some, if not all of the roots will come through and the idea can still be understood. Next time you want to blame something on the "imperialistic americans" check your own history. bi referring to two is a latin thing which is what YOUR language evolved from. Just because us americans are bigger and more powerful doens't mean we're the bane of existance and the root of all evil dispite what the BBC may say.
Now take a deep breath and count to 10....better now

yeah sorry about that splurge, just with all this terrorism sludge I'm getting tired of being pointed at as the cause of ultimate evil and trechery. I mean even though this wasn't in a big way, but still when the news reports that those stupid americans did it again over and over and they're OBVIOUSLY biased... It just gets old. This post will get modded, but I remember listening to the BBC one morning when they reported the americans bombed a mosque... A reporter onsight went on about how this was "just like americans" "brute force all the way" "I can't believe they'd attack a religious center" "brutal war tactics" "stupid stradegy" on and on and on anti american this american idiocy that. Then later, I heard the true story from NPR. Some "insurgents" who had automatic weapons took shelter in the mosque and were fireing at our guys. We held them down for awhile and apparently were about to go in and clear it out the old fashioned way when they started firing RPGs at HUM-Vs and blew one up with people in it. That was when they called in a smartbomb. The mosque was damaged but repairable. Anyhow it kinda ****ed me off. This reporter was so caught up in the fact that we blew up an old building, that he forgot to add in that "little" detail about these men trying to preserve themselves. Now regardless of wether the war is right or not or all the diplomatic debate that spawns from that whole arguement. Reporting like that is wrong, and sometimes it seems the whole world has that opinion.... Anyhow this post is now way too long and I'm going to lunch. |

Is he still the richest one ?
Wasnt it in the news last year or sumthing that the founder of IKEA was now the richest man in the world.

Now come on,Ive heard lots of ppl talking about npcing,For like 100mill/hour,But they never want to tell how
No,You dont have to tell me exact how you made your billions,But just in what way? Mining,NPCing?
I dont know about mining,But NPCing doesnt give too much money unless you find some rare items..Then there is these lvl 4 missions,Yea they seem good with loot and all...
But to the question,How did you get your first billion?

Well as I mentioned before I was lucky in the agent lottery. Before that, I used to sell T2 stuff from bpcs and my wallet was always hovering around the 100mil mark. Never been much of a miner I'm afraid, even back in the early days.
I'm interested to know how people are getting their money working for them. Anyone want to give up a few secrets?

Ok to all ppl fighting over Billion and milliard.
In french, milliard is still used as the 10^9 mark, and folowing milliard is billion. Are language wasn't affected by silyl americans, so it kinda is proof that yes milliard is correct and billion is a million million thats why its "bi", to make this more obvious for you all, its like bisexual, bi for two, so billion isnt 10^9. French for teh win!
Its milliard, get over it. Just cause your government changed the dictionnary to keep every banker from confusing their clients to death, doesn't make it right. --------------------------------------------- Yea thats right, I went there (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. 2.7bil for me.
Started out heading for first bil ripping off CA/SE/CFS in Agil, at commonly refered to "Agil Prices" 3 times here than most other places. Before I got to bil, I pooled money with a close friend and we invested in a Tempest BPO, after a few months we used the profits to buy a Apoc BPO and several other "NEW" BPOS. Selling the "NEW" BPOs quickly doubled our worth. Eventually sold most of our investments and assets off and split the cash and assets left.
Not sure how Im making money at the moment really, but constantly hovering about 2.7bil in cash dispite losing zealots as fast as I can buy them.

It really depends on how long you have been playing the game.
Yes, I originally made my first several billion by mining Ark. Then I used that money to buy BPOs to churn out BPCs and also to buy and sell minerals/loot/ships on the market. The market is very unstable and if you have the money to buy up cheap minerals/loot/ships and hold them until the market recovers you will make a very nice return on your money.
It wasn't that long ago that 50k rats were the scariest ones you would run across. Now though it is easy to make 10+ million an hour in just bounties. If you count the good loot and the recycled value of the bad loot, you can easily make 50-100 million a day. If you find an officer spawn then you can make several hundred million in a day or more.
It wasn't that long ago that missions were something you did just because you were bored. There sure wasn't any money to be made.
Now though, there are far too many ways to make billions in this game.

I feel that even if you did know someone I robbed, you wouldn't care or do anything about it, to be honest. The people of Eve are pretty much all the same - "Ohhhh, if I ever caught a corp thief, I'd pod him until he needed to retrain Bowel Movements to level 1 to take a dump properly!" - "Ohhh, corp thieves are the lowest of scum, everyone hunts them to extinction!".
I've been robbing corporations to make money for about a year now, as have some of my corpmates. We offer hangar theft as part-and-parcel of our mercenary war campaigns. Unlike most thieves I even sign my robberies with a saucy bookmark, containing my name and corp-name, left in the target's cleared out hangar - in case they want to do something about us. I estimate I've pulled thirty robberies like these so far. In all this time, after all these hits, we've seen all of one war declared against us for what we do. In all this time, even though the Guiding Hand has a very public reputation as thieves, we keep getting hired... hell, I even wrote a story about it in the library.
As far as I see it, it's a perfectly valid and often very profitable way to make money, nothing more, nothing less.

Are you a "bookkeeper"? By that I mean do you have charts, spreadsheets, records, stuff like that?
I'm asking because as a builder I even keep a mineral inventory on excel and track my mineral wealth. The BP's stay the same but the cash and minerals fluctuate alot.
Anyone else here into graphs and spreadsheets?
